³ INTRODUCTION ³
³ ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ³
³ ³
³ Originally released 25/3-1993, this document revised 3/3-1998 to ³
³ include up-to-date email information. ³
³ ³
³ The player you now read about is a freeware demonstration player ³
³ for playing programmed music in AdLib or Sound Blaster. You may ³
³ freely distribute it as much as you want. However, do NOT change ³
³ any of the files, nor may any of the files be removed. ³
³ ³
³ The PLAY.EXE player program is only a tool for playing the .D00 ³
³ and .D01 files. It is NOT an editor. However, an editor has been ³
³ released which can create music similar to the quality of these ³
³ tunes. Refer to the contact information in the end of this file ³
³ for a link to our homepage - where you can obtain the editor. ³
³ ³
³ All the music was programmed into a homemade player system which ³
³ works like a typical programmed player - just like on the Amiga ³
³ and the Commodore 64. The editor was later used to develop music ³
³ and SFX for games such as "Lollypop" by Rainbow Arts. The music ³
³ you find in this player, however, was actually made in assembler ³
³ listings way before the editor was programmed. ³
³ ³
³ ³
³ REQUIREMENTS ³
³ ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ³
³ ³
³ The player requires a PC with 80x50 text screen capabilities and ³
³ an AdLib card or compatible. Anything that is equipped with an ³
³ OPL2 chip or better. To play .D01 files, you also need a sample ³
³ DMA channel which conforms to the Sound Blaster standard. ³
³ ³
³ In other words, these tunes should work fine on all soundcards ³
³ which are Sound Blaster compatible. ³
³ ³
³ ³
³ FILES ³

³ ³
³ The following files should be present in the archive. If they're ³
³ not, the archive has been tampered with and should be replaced ³

³ INSTRUCTIONS ³
³ ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ³
³ ³
³ The player itself is easy to use. Just type PLAY <musicname> and ³
³ it will be playing in your loudspeakers if you have a compatible ³
³ soundcard. Two extension types are available; .D00 and .D01. The ³
³ first, .D00 indicates a pure AdLib musicfile, utilizing 9 voices ³
³ of FM synthesized music. A .D01 is 9 voices FM synthesized music ³
³ AND an 8-bit sample track controlled by the DMA. By typing e.g. ³
³ DIR.D01 you can see all the tunes done with a sample track. Note ³
³ that in some cases there are TWO versions of the same music, one ³
³ for each card type. To play "The Alibi" with samples you have to ³
³ type PLAY THEALIBI.D01. If you do not specify the extension, the ³
³ PLAY.EXE program will first search for the extension written in ³
³ the PLAY.CFG file. This file can of course be edited in a normal ³
³ text editor. ³
³ ³
³ Once playing the music, you will notice a box to the lower left ³
³ of the screen with some keys you can use while playing: ³
³ ³
³ Choice If only one tune is available in the block you ³
³ just loaded, only a "1" is present. Note that in ³
³ "THEALIBI.D01" (Sound Blaster), you can choose 1 ³
³ or 2. The first tune is a drumtrack demo and the ³
³ second is the actual "The Alibi" music. ³
³ ³
³ Stop Simply stops the music. ³
³ ³
³ Pause Toggle to halt it - then continue from where you ³
³ stopped it. Useful when the phone rings! ³
³ ³
³ Forwind Kind of "Fast forward" button. I know it is too ³
³ fast, but that is how we liked it on the C64! :) ³
³ ³
³ Volume UP/DOWN The cursor UP/DOWN keys controls the main volume ³
³ of the FM part. In the window to the right you ³
³ can see a hexdecimal value for the main volume. ³
³ Note that the volume cannot be controlled in the ³
³ sample channel. The volume values may seem to be ³
³ upside down, but this is actually how it really ³
³ works inside the AdLib FM chip. ³
³ ³
³ CPU time Toggle this to turn the raster time usage ON or ³
³ OFF. Only useful for programmers. ³
³ ³
³ Other information on the screen will be the soundcard player name ³
³ and version, name of music and of the original composer. However, ³
³ some earlier versions of the players does not support any names. ³
³ Here, an "N/A" will be put in these spots instead. Note also that ³
³ the earlier player versions (as used in the tune "GONE") does not ³
³ use the equalizer display. ³
³ ³
³ The frames per second value are only of use for programmers. It ³
³ simply shows how many times a second the player has to be called ³
³ in order to update the notes and effects properly. ³
³ ³
³ ³
³ CREDITS FOR THE MUSIC ³
³ ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ³
³ ³
³ All music was in fact converted (by Jens-Christian Huus) from the ³
³ original Commodore 64 tunes. In the beginning, I did not use any ³
³ converter program as such. Later, I had to write one as it became ³
³ quite tedious. Chords on the C64 were often done using "Arpeggio" ³
³ which is a fast combination of notes - giving the impression of a ³
³ three (or four) note chord using only one voice. This had to be ³
³ done like this on the C64 as this computer only had three voices! ³
³ On the PC, these chords could be extracted into neat and physical ³
³ voices, giving a much more professional sound. Even then, some of ³
³ the voices were not used (AdLib has 9 voices), but they were then ³
³ used for echo and reverb effects, to enhance the overall quality. ³
³ ³
³ Most of original Commodore 64 music was composed by other members ³
³ of Vibrants. One exception is the "Strike Force" music, which was ³
³ originally composed by an unknown german guy called "Diflex". The ³
³ tunes by Vibrants were composed in 1989-1991, and I did the AdLib ³
³ conversions in 1992. ³
³ ³
³ Note that because the player was made in 1992, the address stated ³
³ in the top of the screen is obsolete. ³
