IMPORTANT - CODE CHANGES
PHONEDAY - 16th APRIL 1995
Local Codes
*¤°¬¯¯¯¬°¤*
All local codes (usually 2 or 3 figure numbers) will be replaced with the
national code number. This has already happened in some parts of the country.
When you use the national code for a local call you are still only charged at
local rate.
Remember, if your call is to a number on the same exchange no code is
necessary. Just dial the number.
National Codes
*¤°¬¯¯¯¯¯¯¬°¤*
New telecommunications services such as information and entertainment
services [Wank Lines], cable TV, and mobile communications has meant an
increase in demand for numbers. Only a few codes remain unused in the current
telephone numbering system. To satisfy demand and create a more flexible code
structure for the future it has been agreed with Oftel, in consultation with
the telecommnications industry, that the best solution is a complete change of
codes.
Phoneday
*¤°¬¬°¤*
On 16th April 1995 - Phoneday - national dialling codes will change to
include a `1' after the initial `0', for example:
* York 0904 will become 01904
* London 071 will become 0171
* Romsey 0794 will become 01794
The exception to this is in Bristol, Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham and
Sheffield. These 5 UK cities will be given completely new national codes, and
one extra digit will be added to individual customer numbers, for example:
* 0272 becomes 0117 9; for Bristol
* 0532 becomes 0113 2; for Leeds
* 0533 becomes 0116 2; for Leicester
* 0602 becomes 0115 9; for Nottingham
* 0742 becomes 0114 2; for Sheffield
The changes on Phoneday will not affect:
* Individual customers numbers or local calls except in Leeds, Sheffield,
Nottingham, Leicester and Bristol. (see above)
* FREEphone or reduced rate services - e.g 0800 or 0345 numbers.
* Information and entertainment lines - e.g 0891 or 0898 numbers. [Uh! Uh!]
* Mobile phone numbers.
* The colour of buses - e.g The number 18 bus from Romsey to Southampton.

International Codes

On 16th April 1995 the code to dial abroad from the UK will also change from
010 to 00. This is part of a move to provide a single code for all European
countries to access the international network.
