That's silly. I think they're just rationalizing dropping AAA. I believe they
plan to concentrate on low-end stuff. AAA doesn't play there, the RISC
project does. And as you get arbitrarily low end, your software requirements
shrink to arbitrarily small chunks. It goes without saying that "AmigaOS on a
brand new RISC machine with brand new graphics subsystem" is a significantly
larger project than "a port of graphics.library, trackdisk.device, and
audio.device to AmigaOS 3.1".

Indeed. The RISC project has been in the works for quite some time, though
it's still at the design stage only. And with only one chip designer still at
Commodore, you can bet it hasn't moved alot in the last six months.

He is certainly making the choice that suits what he preceives to be the best
market for C= UK and his foreign partners. What's unclear is just how that
suits most Amiga users. My guess, based on these announcements, is "not well
at all". So now's the time to get nervous, and at least demand of Pleasance,
or whoever wins the bid, just what the future of Amiga holds.

A year or so ago, there was a migration path of sorts. In that an Hombre
subsystem on a card would have a home in an Amiga based on the Acutiator
architecture. Acting primarily as a display card, over the PCI bus. At the
time, there was no expectation of having any AmigaOS up and running on the
RISC processor, but it would be possible initially to have an RTG driver for
it. Without Acutiator and RTG, this is very questionable.

My guess is it performs better and costs less. Which sounds good. However,
there are lots of machines out there that perform better and cost less. Priced
a PClone lately compared to an A4000? That doesn't necessarily give you a
better system. Software is a big factor here.

There's only so much I can say. My main point was to bring to light just one
issue, which everyone reading should have caught: if the UK folks claim they
can't port three AmigaOS modules to AAA, just what kind of software must they
be capable of for the RISC project, which today has no code of any kind
written for it. Don't let that one slide by -- demand that the new owners of
the Amiga technology commit to the Amiga if they expect your support.
