Alright. Here it is coders, your chance to do something productive for
the amiga community. This is the Instigist here(formally of Faith,
Backlash, and Paranoimia). The Amiga NEEDS support. ESCOM has done their
part in getting amiga's back on the market, but the amiga software
companies haven't been doing their job of creating the top notch next
generation software for the amiga. There are tons of people out there
who don't have the assembly knowledge that we do, nor do they have the
time to play catch-up(or the patience).
That is the premise that sparked my idea. Now here is what I am doing
about it. I am going to make a new programming language. The AAB-DS
(Assembly And Basic-Development System). This will be a cross between
assembly and basic, and best of all, it will produce Assembly language
source code. This is good for many reasons. First of all, for those who
don't know how to do something in assy, you can learn it this way. Most
importantly it will allow you to optimize the code however you want, and
by using an optimizing assembler, you don't have to do anything.
Another important feature is that this will not be a memory hogging,
OS-Friendly only, non-optimizable, slow program like most of it's
predeccessors. This is going to be coded by coders for lamens(haha).
The language will have many of the BASIC commands that everyone since
creation knows(let, gosub, return, goto, repeat...until, for...next,
if...then, etc) and will contain full assembly(via the ASM command) and
have many other features.
I have been working on this project for about two weeks now(I was
challenged by someone to do it haha) and it's beginning to get interesting.
Currently there are 40 commands available. These contain some of the basic
functions, and some demo type functions. The AAB-DS will allow the user
not only to program OS-friendly, library using routines, but to directly
access hardware using optimized routines written by demo coders. To give
you an example of some of these here is a quick summary of some of the
hardware level commands currently useable.
You can set-up your own IRQ's using easy commands such as IRQACT, and
IRQKIL. You can fully take over the systems DMA and disable multitasking
with easy commands like takesys and givesys. You can set-up copper screens
and copper lists with easy commands like cpon and cpoff. Blitter clear,
and copy(fill to be implemented soon) are useable by easy commands such
as bltclr, bltwt, bltcpy. Copper screens are setup with two easy commands
(stcpscr, and cpscr).
I know, for us, right now this is childsplay. However, for a lamen, it
allows them in minutes to do short demo style effects. And within a month
I plan to have the available commands up to over 100. This is where I need
help.
This is a big load for one person, and while I am accomplishing a lot
in a short time, I plan to fully support all of the library calls as well.
Basically the way the system works is takes an easy command and creates
MACROS and MACRO-LIKE commands to do the functions of the user. Then it
reads the source script, places the MACROS neccessary into your destination
file, and does the routines. However, as you are all aware there are
hundreds of Amiga-OS library calls available. And this product will use
none of Amiga's include libraries(waste of compiling time).
This program will also support load in modules(soundtracker and octamed
playing routines are all that I have done, but many will follow). The only
rules are that the for optimizing purposes the AAB-DS places $dff000 into
a5, so if you use that in any of your routines then please replace it upon
exit. This can be useful in your code for optimizing purposes of course
(though most of us already use it).
I want this package to support all sorts of commands and make them easy at
a touch. I'd like to have easy 3d, texture mapping functions, & rexx doors
available with simple commands. Since this program converts into optimized
assembly language source, I believe this could be the first non-assy
language capable of doing HIGH quality commercial software. I believe
next-gen games can be produced with this system, easily and quickly by a
skilled AAB-DS coder.
This package can help us all out. I know that we all have our pre-determined
notions about higher level languages, and like to code in strict assy. But
hey, let's face it, there are some things that are very difficult in assy.
And if these routines are properly optimized(they will be) you can make
the same effects with 5 times less ache and pain. Imagine writing a league
manager type game in full assy. Yet using something like this it would be
done in a couple days work.
This package is an effort to get more of the average joe users to start
becoming productive Amiga users. There will be no limitation or registration
fees on this package. Any program written with it will not have to mention
it anyplace, and they will not have to pay a commercial fee like with
other packages(AMOS, Blitz, etc). This package will be P/D.
So help out, any routines you'd like to donate, or any useful MACROS
to this package would be much appreciated. Yes, I can write many of these
routines by myself, but when you aim this high, it would take years to get
everything implemented. Someone will benefit from your contributions,
and you might benefit from someone elses. Your name will be mentioned
in the Documentation, and you will receive full credit for your routines
(even if they are modified by me to make them better AAB-DS compatible(for
example changing (a5) functions or (pc) functions).
I know many people have released their source code to the public before,
but I will not use anyone's source code without permission, and I want them
to receive their due credit. So give me a call at the number at the bottom
of this text and I will give you the information.
BTW: For a quick taste of what has been implemented here is a brief
summary of the commands currently implemented(fully functional). Most
of these are very simple commands. But I have to get the basic functions
implemented to lay the groundwork. The more complex routines will need
these functions to work(you can't do a fill routine without first opening
a screen to put it on, haha).

These are the only commands currently implemented(41 commands). You
will notice there are still many functions not finished that are
pretty basic(multiplications, divides, ifgt, iflt, if...then, repeat...
until, etc). These will all be implemented(targeted at over 100 commands)
before the first beta release will be available.
