Hi-Color Video player for Atari STE - prel.
Res: 320x158px 12.5 fps
This is preliminary version of this player. First release.
Made for real Atari STE HW, equipped with popular UltraSatan
mass storage adapter.
Requirements:
RAM - 512KB. Free RAM - 200KB.
Atari STE. It will work on some ST too, but without sound
and less colors - some parts may look ugly.
Fast mass storage - min transfer rate is 1100KB/sec.
Additionally, access time must be fast too. My 4GB
Quantum SCSI drive has over 1200KB/sec, but is not
good - because slower access times. So, the best choice
is UltraSatan. But not all SD cards can achieve that speed.
So, please do some speed tests if playback is not OK.
Defragmented partition on which will copy long AV file.
It is a must, because speed is essence here, and we know
that fragmented files load slower.
Limitations:
This first release is for ACSI target 0 only, and AV file
must be located in first 1GB of drive (card) - so in one
of first 2 partitions. AHDI type or TOS/DOS partition is
needed.
Tested with PP, AHDI, ICD and Hddriver. Driver speed self
is not relevant, because this uses own, fast direct ACSI
port disk reading code (only way to get enough rading speed).
You can try this with emulators Steem or Hatari.
Need to
install ACSI hard disk emulation and image file of hard disk.
Ask on forums if not clear - better search little before it.
Future plans: support for any ACSI target (0-7), over 1GB
location of AV file.
Support of IDE hard disks - actually, Compact Flash cards
via IDE IF - then can have even better quality. Write me
mail, or post in forum if interested about it. Please describe
your HW - what IDE IF, CF card have.

This is a Hicolor video player running on Atari ST/STe
Mixer & video player : Petari-Ppera
Video encoder : Cyg/BLaBla
Originally ready end of 2012
Public demonstration for Outline 2014
The video played needs a very fast drive to run smooth
or with any Atari emulators (tested on STeem and Hatari).
Sound is only available for STe, video works on 520 ST & STe.
Some wakeup-states issue can be expected, try to reboot,
a debug version can be expected (I found how to fix it...)
On real hardware:
- launch NP158DE.TTP
- enter the video filename *.CAV
but please follow the technical details from Petari.
Take a close look at "P158DR.TXT" to prepare your drive.
On emulator:
- launch P158DR.TTP
- enter the video filename *.CAV
Video size : 320x158 pixel at 12.5fps.
Encoder : higheSTcolor as used in my demos. Speed was crucial
, it can encode 1 min video in 1h using 1cpu (I5)
More info, details and features about the video player
including modified hardware can be read
at http://atari.8bitchip.info/movpst.php and in the
P158DR.txt file.
How to make video files :
-------------------------
Rename higheSTcolor.doc to higheSTcolor.exe
Rename STEAV158C.doc to STEAV158C.exe
Extract sound & video (PC) :
01_extract.bat : take a closer look to the options
Encoder (PC) :
02_encode.bat : a simple batch to call higheSTcolor encoder
Make sure the BMP files are 320x200 24 bits (188KB)
Take a look to the higheSTcolor options : "higheSTcolor.exe"
with no options will give list the flags.
It will also work for static pictures.
Try to find the hidden modes I use in demos for Hicolor FX :)
Mixer (PC) :
Launch STEAV158C.EXE
choose the 1st (1) and last frames of the extracted video
choose the exctrated/transformed WAV sound
(make sure it is 8bits mono, 25033, etc. see Petari guide)
The result is the CAV file
Video Player (Atari ST/STE) :
P158DR.TTP on real hardware
NP158DE.TTP on emulators
