The image is based on a couple of images Which
were pasted into the gradient background in Photoshop 7.
To "morph" the images into the background and clouds,
layermasks were used.
That technique is used on every pasted image.
The photo with the trees were taken with a Canon
Ixus v2 camera by me. Location New Zeeland.
The spaceships where modelled in 3D Studio by me.
I added some glow effects to their "engines" in Photoshop.

Some glow was added to the moon.
Then some text with contours and blur.
Some 2d clouds was also rendered in Photoshop.
Then I added some stars, "white dots with smudgetool".
