Operation 3Dfx Demo Competition 2

'Visions' README

Copyright 1997,98 Andrew Nicolle

-----------------------------------

Information:

-----------

This demo was submitted to the Operation 3Dfx demo competition 2

(http://www.op3dfx.com) on 3 March 1998.

Entry Name: Visions

Entry Number: 36

Description: 3D demo running at high frame-rates

Written by: Andrew Nicolle

The demo features 5 scenes demonstrating various capabilities of the 3Dfx

chipset. All effects have been optimised to provide maximum frame-rates on

standard 4Mb Voodoo cards. In addition, the 800x600 mode is supported on

Voodoo 2 cards to take advantage of their greatly increased speed.

Requirements:

------------

Pentium processor (Pentium 166 or higher recommended)

24Mb RAM (Possibly less!)

1Mb of harddisk space

4Mb Voodoo Graphics card (3Dfx) with Glide 2.43 or higher

Windows 95 or Windows NT Operating System

Command-line switches:

---------------------

The following command-line switches can be used to alter the behaviour

of the demo. These can be used either by DOS batch files or by creating

short-cuts to the demo and altering the parameters.

-fps Display frame rates at end of demo

 -loop Loops the demo continuously

-800 Set 800x600 display mode (Voodoo 2 only)

-novsync Turn off vertical retrace syncing (improves performance)

For example, the following will display a frame rate summary and turn-off

vertical retrace syncing:

                 visions -fps -novsync

The demo can be stopped at any time by pressing ESC. Frame-rate statistics

will be displayed if these have been enabled.

Performance summary

-------------------

The following frame rates were obtained for a Pentium 200 with 64Mb RAM and a

Monster 3D card using the -novsync option (the number of Vertices and Faces

displayed is listed also):

Motion Blur: 73.4 fps (Verts: 916 Faces: 3608)

Visions: 95.7 fps (Verts: 376 Faces: 728)

Water: 80.2 fps (Verts: 1048 Faces: 1990)

Rotozoomer: 84.3 fps (Verts: 390 Faces: 730)

Earth Zoom: 173.5 fps (Verts: 546 Faces: 1080)

Compatibility

-------------

The demo has been tested under Windows 95 and Windows NT with no known

problems. This demo supports Voodoo, Voodoo Rush, and Voodoo 2 based 3D cards.

Random lock-ups were reported on Voodoo Rush cards with an early beta of this

demo, and there may still be problems in this version.

The demo will run in 800x600 mode on cards with 4Mb of frame buffer memory

(ie Voodoo 2) through the use of the -800 command line switch. This has not

been tested on a Voodoo 2 card, but there shouldn't be any problems. Let me

know how it runs if you have a Voodoo 2!
