Lately, the former 99% friendly ascii artist channel has been

bearing resemblance to a certain infamous non-art, ansi scene

channel. I can't seem to join these days without seeing ppl

being needlessly kicked, banned, or ragged on simply because

they're "outsiders" to the current ascii scene. What if we

end up turning off the next Killa Hertz to the ascii scene?

It isn't a secret that I myself let my online temper flair, &

have words with many a person. However, when was the last ti

me you saw me "abuse my power", and ban somebody that didn't

deserve it? (By deserve it,I mean doing something detremental

to the integrity of #ascii, not because I disagree with them)

In closing, I urge all #ascii ops to watch themselves, & try

their best to keep #ascii a pimpstyle ascii art channel, and

not a #ansi, kiddy porn, kickban, non art, frootyass channel.

                                    -mHz, proud #ascii operatorisimo.

Mister Self Destruct (msd) and Killa Hertz, along

with the people who shaped the PC-ASCII scene into

Hiro Protagonist, etc. Remorse has released 7 paks

since it's resurection, formed out of the ashes of

aCiD!aSCII and tRANK!aSCII, and there has been no

drop off in quality OR quantity of ascii yet. A+.

network in existence. 3. adj: Computer crime, and/or unlawful

activity committed through use of electronic or computer hardware.

      INFORMATION:

þ 20 Message bases, strictly defined to adhere to the tenet of this

network: No fluff - No bullshit - Pure underground discussion.

þ Yes, CyberCrime is back! Based on the CyberCrime International

Network (CCi) of the late eighties and early nineties, the new

CyberCrime is THE underground network for today.

      REQUIREMENTS FOR JOINING:

þ Your BBS must be an underground system, focused partly or wholly

on one or all of these topics: Piracy (Wares), Hack/Phreak,

      or Computer Artwork (Ascii/ANSI/RIP/VGA/Demos/Graphics/Sound).

þ You must run a quality, established BBS. It is a loose requirement

that all systems be up at least a year, however, exceptions can and

will be made, depending upon circumstances. For example, if you run

the ONLY underground system in an area, chances are much better of

your being accepted than the same system in a crowded area.

þ You must setup a Fido-compatible front-end mailer on your bbs in

order to receive messages! At a later date, we will be evaluating

methods to convert CCi over to a Usenet format, to allow internet

BBSes to join, as well as evaluating TransX for transmission of

network packets via e-mail; also, we will be gating the two

general-discussion bases over to a private mailing list, so that

internet users who do not have access to a BBS may participate in

the network, on a limited basis. At present, however, only Fido-

standard BBSes are being accepted into this network.

      TO APPLY:

þ Send Internet email to midsorrow@ice.org or mwaas@shadow.net and

request more information, and/or a copy of the current infopack.

.,,. Section of Magazine - -- Tutorial on Throwing up the Dub. .,,.

Many of my collies, as well as some packs have been riddled

with a phrase unclear to many. "Throw up the Dub" is a form

al request for a person to put their hand into the shape of

the letter W, and raise it high in the air for all to see.

In it's most common context, The Dub refers to 'West Side',

or "Wessyde", and displays love and pride in one's home, if

located on the west side of wherever they live.

Enough explanation, it's time for YOU to learn to throw up

      the dub yourself.

      Step One.

Place your right hand palms down, on a flat surface

      out in front of you.

      Step Two.

Fold your thumb, which should have been on the left

(and coincedentally enough the west side) of your hand UNDER

the rest of your hand, concealing it.

     Step Three.

If you can't see your thumbnail, you're doing well.

At this point, there are two methods you can use. We will

outline both here. It is a little known fact that 2 single

hand dub methods exist, but you'll be skilled soon enough.

        Method One.

Keeping your index and pinky finger in place, move

your middle finger, placing the top part of it touching the

nail of your ring finger. This method is often a bit faster

and is preferred by W.C., and Mack 10 of the Westside Conne

ction, a West Coast rap group which brought The Dub to main

     stream America.

        Method Two.

Keeping your index and pinky finger in place, move

your (pay attention now) RING finger so the bottom of it is

overlapping your middle finger. This method often requires

more practice as well as dexterity of the hands, but I feel

it forms a much cleaner Dub, & the extra practice pays off.

This advanced method of throwing up The Dub is often prefer

ed by Tupac Shakur, as shown on the cover of his multi-plat

inum album 'All Eyez On Me', Megga Hertz the Kingpin, and

any other people that wear large gold rings on their ring,

     and pinky fingers.

     Step Four.

At this point, a perfect Dub should be formed, and

you're ready to throw it high into the air. In one motion,

raise your handle off the flat surface, and twist your arm

so that your nails are facing AWAY from you. Be careful not

too undo your Dub at this point, especially if you're using

"The 2Pac/mHz" method. If you've been succesful, your dub

should be high in the air, and you can wave it all around

     like you just don't care.

     Step Five.

Go over steps one through four many times, and in

time, you will be able to throw up either kind of The Dub,

without using the flat surface. For a final test, try to

form The Dub on your hands WHILE you're raising your arm in

the air. That is the true way to throw up and instantaneous

Dub right after you hear 'Hey G, THROW UP THE DUB!'.

I hope this clearly explains the art of The Dub for all

of those who have asked me. WESSYDE!

                                                        -mHz (W)

<^mHz> I'm here with Arrogance, better known as aCk, one of the ascii scene's

        most influential newschool artists.

<^mHz> Tell us ack, tell the world, when did you start drawing?

<aCk-> Hmmmm.... lemme see if I can remember.

<^mHz> Oh you'll remember alright, you can fuckin' try me.. .

<aCk-> Heh :)

<aCk-> It was about 92-93 when I first saw an ansi pack and decided that it

would be cool if I could do that.

<aCk-> It was an acid pack I believe.

<aCk-> So I dled a copy of thedraw and got to work.

<^mHz> ACiD, always setting the standard. =] So before your budding ascii

talent arose from beneath your fingers, you're telling us you tried

       ansi, no?

<aCk-> I drew ansi for like 3 years. I've been in more ansi groups than

       ascii.

<^mHz> Very interesting, no doubt. As far as the ascii scene, you've always

been in the larger, better groups, such as kTS, Trank!ascii, and now

Remorse. What was it like being in kTS!aSCII during it's early days,

while it was molding the PC-ASCII scene into what it is today?

<aCk-> It was really fucking cool. Heh. :)

<^mHz> Great answer, asshole.

<aCk-> Well... We had some of the gods: K-spiff, Cyberkid, Sparr, TINYZ,

Shock G, and others. Even Eerie.

<^mHz> I seem to remember a Trank colly of yours called 'Tribute 1.o', which

paid tribute to artists that you feel influenced the WHOLE ascii

scene. Who do you feel got you where you are today personally?

<aCk-> Well... to start off w/Phaser X who got me into the scene w/his shitty

little group KWiD back in 93. And then Piromaniak and Night Blade for

making me want to draw ASCii's, Tinyz for letting me in KTS, and

Necromancer for being a phat enough bastard to keep Remorse on it's

       feet.

<^mHz> No doubt. You're an op in #ascii; What do you think about the

#ansi-ish direction the channel seems to be taking lately?

<aCk-> Well... There seems to be a lot of "psyburt0st3ster0ne" flying through

the air. People sometimes get so obsessed w/who is better than who at

what, and why this person sucks more than this person. It's retarded.

Than there's also some of the incredibly immature things that go on.

We don't have that as much as #ansi thank god.

<^mHz> Yeah, I don't think #ascii will EVER be that fucked up.

<aCk-> But we do have some constant nagging, and arlequin still comes on

       sometimes, and that's annoying. :)

<^mHz> What type of releases do you have slated for the future? More

newschool logos, collies, or some of that aCkoldschool?

<aCk-> Well... I'll still be producing shitloads of my phat phunky newschool

under the darky1/remorse lable, but I do have plans for an oldschool

colly called Last Cigarette due t ocome out July Some time.

<^mHz> I know I'll get a copy.

<aCk-> w3rdemup. I'll let yah preview it before anyone else, bro.

<^mHz> What direction do you feel the ascii scene is taking, and if you could

change one thing about it, what would that be?

<aCk-> Well... I fear we've already hit it's heyday. There isn't really any

other direction to go. I think the ASCII scene will still be around for

a while, but I think that right now is as large and widespread as it's

I got tired of the same old slashes and dashes, so I incorporated

some never used low-ascii characters into an ascii, and came I up

     with this:

                               /\ _ __

           _ __ _[ ]_ __\ ]___,,__ __ ]___

                _\~ /___\~ _/\~ /___\~ ~~/_

              __\______ /_~ {___\____\___ <<

           < <\\ ~         \\     |____\_    ~~_//   |     _}} }

[ ## ### #\_ | __> | _| _| | |_

               _| | ^^\_ | ^\_ ^\_ | _//

          { {{__ | )) | |_ | | |# ### ## ]

              __| | |_ | ___> > |_ | ~-,

              \_ ___>> > __\~ _//_ ~ / mHzkills,

            [ [[_/\ _,,_> < _,,___\ /__ __/ /_,,__ /\_>> > >

                    \// \\/ \\/ \//

Try it. As far as curves, instead of the same old _/ or the spicy

     _/' , try using _/^, or swap out the / for ] } or > .

use >> > to stretch the letters, and [ ] to break open the tops

of letters. I find that when the actual font has so much going on,

as shown above, it's best to use a simpler background. Megga Hertz

                ' ` '

As shown here, double slashes \\ and // are a good way to 'shade'

ascii, and give your font depth. Never, repeat never, use triple

\\\ slashes, unless you want your font to look horrible for some

reason. Use ` or ^ to connect curves. Also, follow my new trend,

as shown above and extend the background, in this case comprised

of = signs INSIDE the letters; it makes the font flow better.

                                         \------/

<^mHz> I'm here with Phreak Klass, ex-Remorse oldschool ascii artist; Pk, I've

heard you've recently started an amiga type colly releasing group clled

Afluence^Design, tell us about the group, it's plans, etc.

< pk^> well the group is an amiga group limited to 7 people, oldschool only.

< pk^> i have also joined a PC group, serial

<^mHz> You left remorse fairly abruptly after joining, and if I remember

       correctly, you had some fairly outspoken reasons for doing so;

       what were some of those?

< pk^> well i dont want to state them as i feel it is irelivent and may

influence other oppinions of remorse all i can say is that i left on my

       own accord.

<^mHz> What ascii group do you feel is on top now, both pc and amiga..

< pk^> well i think that serial is the best pc group ..

< pk^> and amiga well that a tuff one, i think Tropic Ascii has great potential

at being a raising star in the ascii scene

< pk^> however i think Jedi takes the cake

< pk^> Jedi have a great team, who are dedicated at what they do. However, I

think ED, -T and Style are not far behind at all

<^mHz> Serial has had some controversy surrounding it, including beefs with

more then a few rMRS artists -- what do you say to people who have a

       problem with Serial?

< pk^> I think that they should give serial a go, i mean it has a great line of

artists, including sQuish who is in my group Afluence, i must admit i am

adicted to his style. I think Serial is the choice for ami dudes

      migrating to the PC scene

< pk^> people see Serial as a respected group in both the PC and Amiga scene,

something that Remorse dosen't have in the amiga scene

<^mHz> Who else is in A^D besides you and sQuish? Is it invite only?

< pk^> its basically invite only we choose who we want and offer, altho if you

think your up to the standard feel free to apply, in the group there is

      myself, sQuish, war-child and mSO

<^mHz> That seems like a fairly good team for now; Let me go back to the

remorse subject; Do you have feelings of apathy towards any remorse

staff/artists, or did you leave on somewhat friendly terms?

< pk^> well i dont think i left on the best of terms with anyone in the group,

i dont really think that i should comment on the remorse subject as i

say, all i would like to say is peace, and if anyone there thinks 'they

won' there wrong, because i am simply stating i dont care what they

think, i am open to peace. if that makes sence 8-)

<^mHz> Nope.

<^mHz> Alright, just a few more questions. What do you think of that crazy

       mutherfucker Megga Hertz the Kingpin?

< pk^> hahha

<^mHz> I'll take that as somewhat positive.

< pk^> well i think he is a prick,,! nah just kidding .. he is a cool ducky

< pk^> i respect mega hurtz

<^mHz> Which artists if any influenced your style/ascii career?

< pk^> well, none really, except for my friends who have given ideas, i

remember back in the old scene before i even had an inet account Acid

Kid, and Psyche (both amiga dudes from my city) teaching me how to

sprooce up my packs and crap.. also Dartagnan lately helped me spred out

my packs, peace to all of you

< pk^> hah im still heere 8-)

<^mHz> Alright, thanks for the interview, and good luck with Afluence Design.

If you'd like to add anything else, say it below, and then sign your

name to show that you hold neither Megga Hertz or any of the Skills

staff responsible for unauthorized answer manipulation.

< pk^> haha

< pk^> -- Kearhp Ssalk

< pk^> 8-)

< pk^> phreak klass

< pk^> peace to the ascii nation

<^mHz> later.

<^mHz> you're free to go.

< pk^> ok

 .,,. EPILOGUE .,,.

Less then two minutes later, Phreak Klass was banned from #ascii.

<^mHz> why'd messiah ban pk?

<HAISSEm> ^mHz ; because he paraded around for 2hours one day saying shit like

'fuck you remorse, suck my fucking cock' and shit like that

<skatter> who is pk

        And that's that.

.. speaking his mind in an editoral on the issues of style and orginality ..

I won't bother to introduce myself. If you're reading this you should

already know who I am. If you don't, then you don't know the "oldschool"

Ibm-pc ascii scene and none of this will really matter much to you. So

quit reading this and go back to idling in #ansi ('Nam) or something.

As many of you should recall, several months ago I released a little

text outlining what I felt was a style-rip perpetrated by Feral. Feral

probably caught a good amount of flack after I released that text, as

I didn't see him around #ascii as much anymore, but I didn't encourage

anyone to make life rough for the kid. I did and still do agree with what

Whodini expressed in his little response to Feral's little response. If

you missed that text by Whod, it basicly said "you got caught, don't do

it again." I believe that by taking some kind of high road in these

matters I do what is best for for myself and the scene as a whole.

We don't need a million text files flooding our scene the way they did

the Amiga ascii scene a year ago. I read a good chunk of them when all

that was going on and I don't think any of it helped their scene. I agree

it is important to differentiate from the artistic innovators and the

style copiers, but at what cost to the scene and who is to decide what

   constitutes one or the other?

By now a certain portion of our readers have decided I take the scene

far too seriously (they're wrong) and I encourage them to stop reading

this and go back to idling in #oldwarez or something. I do take ascii

very seriously however. Were I not to, I would be devaluating the time

and effort I put into it. Ascii is an artform, as valid as any other I've

ever worked with. I see ascii as a greater challenge than many other

forms of computer art however, as the scene is growing rapidly and it is

becoming harder and harder to find a new technique or style that has not

been done before in order to seperate yourself from the pack. I have an

advantage over many in this area since I've been working with ascii for

a long time (since 1989) and in my time have viewed more styles than most

people even realize are out there (-40c temperatures in february leave me

with alot of free time to sit at the machine).

So when I see an artist try on a new style that contains elements of

other artists I must always ask myself on which side of the line does

this fall? Is it biting someone else's style or is it simply the result

of one artist influencing another? Every ascii we ever see effects how

we look at the artform and produce our own styles. And it's not just the

actual construction of the art either.

In fact, the people who've been the greatest influence on my own ascii

have been artists with an attitude all of their own. Many of my favorites

are considered by many to be in the true foreground of today's scene, and

I believe this has as much to do with their attitude towards their art as

the artwork itself. For my influences are the ones who have always been

   original to themselves.

So, by my way of seeing things, what does it take to be more than just

another ascii artist and seperate yourself from the pack? Style and

originality - perhaps the two most often discussed but least well defined

   aspects of the scene.

It's not up for me to define these elements, and I believe the only one

who can ever properly define them for you is yourself. You have to decide

where that line is, and how to best ride it. About all I can do is speak

with the knowledge grained from my own 8 years of working with ascii. And

again, you have to decide which of my words are of value to you.

So by now a few of you are wondering what the hell inspired me to go

off at 3am and write this editorial, and guess what kids, I'm going to

tell you (big surprise, huh?). The other day someone sent me the

following logo by Squish from the most recent Vintage:

               ______/\ //\__ /\______ _

Certainly a well constructed peice of ascii, and it got a nice placing

in Vintage. The ascii was sent to me from one of my callers (you know

who you are) as some people had been expressing they felt "it looked a

hell of a lot like hiro entered the compo." I did not enter it, btw.

So I load the piece up into one page in TheDraw and bring up my style

records (yes kids, I have records of every style I've ever done, going

all the way back to 1989 - this again relates to taking the artform in a

serious way and placing value on it) one by one in the other page. I

collect little elements from one style after another until I have a nice

big old mess of things strewn across a couple pages of workspace and

begin to see the combination of elements into the whole.

So now a good number of you are all saying "Hiro thinks he was ripped

again.. yadda yadda" (and again you're wrong, kind of). I think the font

carries with it some style twists I developed and made popular, and the

E almost has my name written on it, but at the same time I keep drawing

myself back to what I think is good for the scene. And I think it's good

that someone like myself who works hard at ascii can influence other

artists and in turn inspire them to create something new, even if there

isn't anything particularly new in that font up there.

Influences are key to finding you own style of ascii. Now notice, I'm

not saying "rip to become good" because that type of attitude it utterly

moronic and belongs on AOL. What I am saying is when I look at that logo

I can see something I have done has spoken to Squish on a non-verbal

level of communication, and influenced him to try to take the art to a

new place its never been before.

I'm certainly not the only person who has influenced that logo either,

which is why I just shrug it off as the way things work. There are very

few artists today who are lucky enough to have so many people get in

tune with that other level of communication they broadcast in their

ascii. When I see my art making that kind of impact I know I'm doing

something right - and I hope the scene is all that much better for it.

Does this mean I want to see every style element I ever use wind up

in everyone else's book? Of course not, if everyone did exactly what I

do there would be no point at all for any of this. And if all you can

ever do is take other people's style elements without creating any of

your own theres not much point for you being around either.

So create my children.. with each new twist of characters we come one

step closer to the type of scene we need. If I've been an influence on

your work you really don't have to tell me, I can usually see it one

way or another (of course doing me a few logos is always a good way to

say thanks). Experience just gives me an edge in that department.

Of course I'm still not to happy with Squish, and I do wish he'ld get

off that style and move back to something more of his own - but this is

really neither here nor there as far as this editorial goes.. this was my

attempt at speaking about the things we always speak of, but never really

explain. And if it's not too late I might have actually made enough sense

  for you to understand..
