WELCOME TO PACMAG #41!
òFinally, this issue of Pacmag is out! We're sorry about the delay, but we had some 'technical difficulties', but now it's here! This little intro-text will be short, because the shorter this text, the earlier you'll be able to get this issue!
ðWe've got all the usual stuff; trader-charts, votes, movie reviews, game reviews, and also and interview with Naish & Den Slatne Coder! We're sorry that there're no icons or any fancy colors in this issue, but hopefully, it'll all return in next issue! Another thing that's a real pity is, that the uploads/downloads from Electronic Confusion and Bodycount are not included in the charts, because the file-lists we received from the boards were from june! But otherwise... Have fun till next ish!

M I'm located at the SHI Summer "party", and have only found two guys(?) who
J has a connection to the scene. This is the interview with 2 members of
- sumpen: coders Naish and Den Slatne Coder.
m: When did you start Sumpen?
n: TP4, duh, i think.
d: me 2
m: why "sumpen" ???
d: why not??
n: bcoz Sumpen is da danish word for what we doo.
m: What do you do ???
d: as little as possible
n: Actually we have tried zumzin' new. We tried 2 build a group, based entirely
on friendship. Coding demos & becoming elite doesn't really matter to us.
We try to have as much fun as possible (no problemo, dude!), and if a demo
or an intro (dentro, musicdisk, util, etc...) is released, then it's purely
accidental.
d: We may not be the best group on the scene, but sure as hell try be the one
who has the most fun (vi dømmer os selv til kvajebong)!

m: What have sumpen released up until now.
d: Uhm ... nothing so far, but we've had unrealisticly much fun...
We will however release a demo called "Mælk" and an intro called "Møh".
These two productions should be out when you read this. If not, theyll be
released shortly.
n: Sumpen has in fact released one (1, uno, een, un, one) production called
AGA-StarterPro V2.1. REGISTER NOW! It may be too late tomorrow!
m: Why those weird handles ?!!?!??
n: Actually my handle comes from a really "slatten" surfer.
d: "Den Slatne Coder" (often abbrevaited as DSC) can be translated into some-
thing like: "The-So-Relaxed-He's-Almost-In-A-Coma-Coder". I took this handle
because it suits me incredibly well, it's almost like the handle _is_ me.
m: Are there other members in sumpen ?

d: I'm a hardware programming specialist. I can crash/trash any Amiga with
any configuration anytime anywhere in at least 1.5639 million different
ways. (Look for my upcoming bug.library.)

n: I am currently developing the new BootX version 6.00. My job also includes
keeping Erik Løvendahl on the edge of nervous breakdown. I also have to
teach DSC how to program systemfriendly bugs, and I assure you that it is a
hard days night.
d: Next question please?
m: Back to "Sumpen". What kind of future do you predict for sumpen ? ?
d: At least releasing one demo, 2 intros, 2 modules, one piccy all for The
Party '95.(Pheew)
n: Unfortunately, this includes heavy work, which is against sumpens code of
honor: The lazier the better. That is why we live a life of ever growing
complexity. You should feel sorry for us. But you shouldn't believe a
bit(0 or 1) of what we say (If you do, you can f... off).
m: Reaching the end of this interview, and running out of questions, I would

Well here we are again, at the new edition of Console Corner. This month there's been a few interesting games, and a single VERY interesting game, namely the long-awaited Killer Instinct. Check out the in-depth review later on.
But there's lots of things happening on the console market right now. Soon the SNES might be a small, slow and rude machine, compared to all the new ones. But Nintedo are doing a lot to keep the Snes releases going, and maybe it's not so stupid. You see, there are millions of Snes owners, and many of them simply don't have the money to buy a Playstation, Saturn, Ultra or whatever, instead they see Killer Instinct and say "hey I can afford that, instead of a Saturn". In this case, the game is extremely cool, and in many cases, games supported by big N themselves are way cooler than most others. Just look at Zelda, DK Country, Super Mario World etc.
There's still companies like Konami to release brilliant stuff, but Nintendo and/or Rage are also doing very well. The fact that many companies turns to Saturn/PSX etc. as well as Snes doesn't scare me, as long as Nintendo keeps supporting.
Anyway, the new consoles ARE rather exciting. I mean, just look at the prices. You can get a Sony Playstation for 2.500 dkr.! That's just 800 dkr. more than I gave for my Snes 3 years ago! And the machine is way more powerful. I will be among the crowd of happy PSX owners, you can be sure of that. The games are just so cool, so no doubt about it. I need one. Oh, and an Ultra. And a Saturn wouldn't be bad (even though it's not as cool :-). But the PSX comes first, there are tonnes of cool games available (Tekken, SF the movie, Jumpin' Flash! etc.) and lots of games to come. Yummy!
I could rave on forever, but there's no point in doing that. So instead I'll leave you in the heat that Denmark (and pretty much the rest of europe) is experiencing right now.

Oh dear. This is an awful game. It simply makes me very sad. Why? Because it's so F-U-C-K-I-N-G AWESOME! It's taken over my life! I love it! I wanna marry it!

No really, the game is finally here. They said it couldn't be done, that the game needed the Ultras power. Well I guess they were wrong, coz once again Rage delivers the wares!
Without beating the bush, here's basically what the game's all about:
You know Street Fighter? Good. Imagine Street Fighter with cooler characters. Like Cyborgs and Werewolfs and other mutants. Dull, innit'? I mean the wow-factor isn't exactly jaw-dropping yet, eh? Oh yeah, but try adding a few more moves to this game. Hm... try adding a few cool combos. Now it's beginning to sound better. Let's add some finishing moves, like those in Mortal Kombat. Oh and some blood. Let's make them cooler than MKs. Let's make Fatalities, Ultimates, Humiliations, Awesome victories, pushing of cliffs, counter-defense, totally cool combos (up to 22 hit!), extremely well-defined and smooth graphics, wonderfully atmospheric sound and music (you have to hear the announcers voice, fukkin' cool!), and to top it off, let's add sqillions of tonnes of gameplay!
Sounds interesting? Yeah a bit, right? And it IS! Very much.
But honestly, it's just another beat'em up! Yeah I know, but there's something about this game. It's... Well the intro is cool, everything is so POLISHED.
But on to the game. There's actually a storyline, something like a company that wants to build the ultimate fighting machine or whatever. Who really gives a shit? You've got some cool characters to choose from, they all have wonderful damage-inflicting moves and moves smoothly around. Choose one, and you are into action.
"FIGHT ON"
Well what can I tell you about the fighting itself? You have an enormous repetoire of moves and combos which range from being quite easy to perform (3-7 hit moves) to harder (8-12) and finally impossible (12-? hit) - or so it seems the first 200 times you try it :-)
There's a lot of backgrounds in the game, and they actually differ in more than looks. One is on the top of a skyscraper, ie long way down, should one of the combatants accidentially fall off... cool way of ending a fight, but remember that the character you want to push off has to be close to the edge.
The characters themselv also differ a lot. We've got Jago, a very agile young monk(?) who is very jumpy, has a sword and a liking for long range jumping kicks. Then there's B. Orchid the chick of the game, she has one hell of a body (just check the move where she removes her shirt ;-). She can perform mean combos and are rather fast. Thunder is the indian guy (no, not from India, he's an american native, gettit?) and he is a very good guy to control. He's got an easy way of starting a combo, so we like him. If you are into boxing, you could always try choosing Combo, the Tyson look-a-like of the bunch. He's got one helluva uppercut, a nice move to end a combo with. His running mega-punch is also nice.
Moving from the humans to the non-humans, we've got Sabrewulf, a werewolf which howls so sadly that you almost don't bear to hit him. But better do so! He has a suprisingly mean combo which at first looks weak and slow, but master it and you can make people drop jaws. There's also Cinder, a strange flame-like creature (looking like torch from the fantastic four or whatever). He can become invisble and can shoot som strange machinegun looking flames. Nice. Oh and he can, like the others, shoot fireballs (or other projectiles) in mid-air.Cool!
The last one I will mention is Fullgore. He has a very nasty move/combo collection, and you just have to experience his AWESOME move. He's a sort of a robot, and out pops a MAJOR machinegun and he starts pumping rounds into the unfortunate opponent. DAMN, I almost lost my jaw when I first saw that move. It just looks so cool, how the opponent just stands there and takes tonnes of bullets and blood is spraying all over. Guess I'm a sucker for graphic gore, eh? ;-)
That's pretty much what's in the game. But did I mention the cool music, the cool graphic, the cooler sound, and so on? I cannot believe how the h*ll Rage can squeeze that much on to a 32Mb (4 megabytes) cartridge! The same game on Amiga would have filled maybe 7-8MB and on PC 14-20MB. Anyway, it doesn't matter. The game is just cool, and I'm very sorry, but I don't wanna write anymore, coz there's one of my friends here who says he's gonna kick my butt, but he doesn't know that I know Fullgore's special moves.. hehe, to quote the americans on basketball:

The Background
Colonization puts you in the role of Viceroy Of the New World. You are sent by your King and country to establish colonies in the newly discovered Americas that lies to the west. You face many of the same challenges that faced colonial organisers of the time - competition from other Old World powers, strange native cultures, the problems of establishing profitable trade programs, and the problems of organising an army from a rag-tag band of colonists.
The game begins with the European discovery of the Americas (1500) and continues until approxemently the time of the American Revolution (1800). In the beginning of the game you are given a trading/exploration ship and a small group of colonists. You have no knowledge of what lies ahead of your ship, so you must explore until you find a suitable spot to lay down your first colony. As your colonies grow larger and larger you inviteably encounter native populations and are confronted with competing imperial powers from the Old World.
To be successful in Colonization you must balance your need for military might with your need for essentials. You must decide early what your strategy is and pursue it relentlenssly, but be flexible enough to adjust to a changing situation. It is very important to have a consitent policy with the natives, because the handling of those relationships are critical. Finally, you must build a colonial society that has the infrastructure to survive a test by fire - the War of Independence.
In Colonization, you have the chance to change history. As a colonial power, you decide the policies, you make the plans, you choose what is important and what is insignificant. Finally, you will be called upon to decide when to declare independence from your mother country.
The Game will run on both AGA and ECS machines, but if you have an AGA machine you will be treated with som nice backgrounds and the option of running the game on your workbench. There are five different set of diffuculty levels, and you can choose between four different european powers.
jYou start your first colony with very limited resources and have to build alomost everything from scratch.
You must chop lumber that can be processed to make improvements on existing buildings and also used to make new ones, like docks, schools, churches, stables, newspapers, stocades, and so on.
An ore production must be started, so you dont have to import expensive tools from your home country. Your blacksmiths will convert the to theese tools. The tools can be used for your building projects and your gunsmiths can use them to make muskets.
On the fields you can grow food, tobacco, cotton, and sugar, these crops can be sold in your home country or be processed into commodities and sold for a higher profit.
You must set up friendly relations with the natives or you will soon be in a state of war with them, this is done by sending out missionaries and handing over gifts when you are asked for it.
Another nice feature (considering the slaugther the native Americans was subjected to) is that for every indian village you destroy, points are deducted from your final score, and some skills like tobacco planting, wood lore and fur trapping can only be learned from the indians.
As you colonies grows and become more selfsufficient the cry for independence will raise, when it reaches 50%, your production will bee boosted, and it is time to begin to arm your colonies for the battle to come with the Royal Expeditionary Force.
Warships must be build to secure your harbours and docks, fortresses must be build around your colonies, you must train soldiers, and your gunsmiths must stock up on muskets and artillery.
ùYou can at any time in the game see how tough opposition you face, by consulting your millitary adviser, other advisers available is religeous, political, trade and exploration advisers. Theese will provide you with information on how you are doing.
There are 10 slots availble to save the game, 2 are reserved for the auto-save option, the other 8 are for you. The savegame format is combatible with the MSDos PC version of the game, so you can transfer the saved game to an PC.
Another nice feature is the interface, it is clearly on of the OS friendly interfaces i have ever seen. The games uses the OS to such an extent that one hope this will become a new standard for games to come, and that is why the game is compatible with A500, A500+, A600, A1200, A1500, A2000, A3000 and A4000, it will even autodectect an AGA machine an add extra features.
Theres no dought in my mind that Colonization will establish it self as one of the great(est) Amiga games. It carries a lot of the same features that made Civilization so popular and Microprose say that Colonization was partly made to provide a rewarding experience to those that loved Civilization.
If you are looking for a challenging game and are tired of the usual beat them'up, shot them'up and platform games that the game market is so overcrowded with, then this is what you are looking for.
To tell you the honest truth, i cant remember when a game of this quality have been released for past 1 year or 2. If you like it you shuold consider buying the original (i did, it cost 299 kr), it is clearly that when it comes to quality games for the adult user of the Amiga it is stil Micro Prose who sets the standard, and will for a long time to come, i hope.
How lucky MicroProse is to have a capacity like Sid Meier working for them. He gave us Railroad Tycoon, Civilization and now Colonization. What will be next great game he makes.?

"Tennis Champs from Mental Software
Short Review
Like the name says this is an tennis game and it is not a good one. The Graphics looks like something one were use to in 1987-88. The sound is anything special either. The game can be played by one or two players, there is a tournement option, and it can be installed om a harddrive. If you like tennis games then stay clear of this one, cause you will only be disapointed, Great Courts II from BlueByte is still the best tennis game available for the Amiga.

This is a puzzle game, you control a small guy who moves boxes around on a field, trying to trap a green blob, who on the otherhand is trying to get you. The graphics and the sound is not anything to write about, the game is a one player game only and it can be installed onto a harddrive. If you like puzzle games, then you should have a look on this, it might provide you with a few hours of thinking and
fun.

Sensible Golf
So it finally arrived, this have been underway for over an half year but now its here, so lets take a look at it and see if it is so good as they promised.
The first thing that strikes is the intro music, i doubt if i am the only one to find that the intro sound very much like the one from Cannon Fodder. The main screen gives three choises of gameplay, play round, play tournement, and play season. Theres also an practice option wich lets you choose between 25 different courses, each with 18 holes.
There is an game option box where you can set graphic detail, skill level, and various other things.
Finally there is an save game option wich also will format a save game disk for you.
So what its like to play.? Well this is not MicroProse golf, nor is it ment to be so. Theres is no vector graphics, no fancy camera angels wich can be set.
But this doesnt really matter because its quite good with out theese things anyway, the game automatically picks your club for you, by the press of a button you are presented with an overhead view of the course where you take your aim, another press takes you thruogh shooting and this can might be a little tricky to start with, but after a few tries you soon get the feel of it.
I find this to a very playable and enjoyable golf game, in my view this is on of the top three golf games on the the Amiga, the only mark wich i set on this game is the lack harddrive support. Sad to say this lack of harddrive support has become a standard for games from Sensible Software.

Ok let's take a look at this new movie from Warner Brothers, starring some of Hollywoods Finest actors.
The movie starts with a nice Warner Bros logo melting to the Batman sign. We then see our Hero Batman (Van Kilmer) on his way to Gotham City, where the evil Harvey Twoface (Tommy Lee Jones) is setting up a trap to catch Batman. When Batman arrives to Gotham he meets Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman), who later on in the movie becomes Batman's and Bruce Wayne's girlfriend.
The movie only played 1 weekend in USA before it broke the weekend record by making 53,3 Million dollars!
We also meet Edward Nygma (Jim Carrey), who's working at Waynes enterprises. He believe in his discovery, a machine which can transfer TV signals into the human mind so they feel they are a part of the Program!! Bruce Wayne doesn't believe in his discovery and cancels the project, but Edward doesn't care, he continues his work, and begins to act on his own as The Riddler! We watch Robin (Chris O' Donnell) join The Batman force also! But enuff about the film, go watch it yourself, I surely recommend it!!

Braveheart - is a hack'n'slash drama directed by Mel Gibson, starring Mel Gibson! There's not so much to tell about the story, but it's about the liberation of the Scottish people and the making of their own country, in a time when men had big swords, and ran around in a kilt - there seems to be a big interest in this storyline lately, just look at Rob Roy, and the forthcoming First Knight with Sean Connery and Richard Gere.
Anyway, Mel Gibson plays a man who assemble an army of people who're tired of getting pushed around by the English army, and decides to go against them, by raiding castles, burning cities, and all that kind of things that looks really great on the big screen. There are LOADS - and I really mean LOADS of action sequences in this movie - and they're great! Never has armies meeting eachother at grand fields, to fight regular battles only carrying sword and shield, been so beautifully executed! Although it's only showed in short flashes, there's schred enough blood to satisfy even the most blood-hungry action-lover. But you can't just throw on another big action-scene each time you expect the audience to want one, and it DOES get a little trivial towards the last third of the movie, but fortunately, there're also, besides Mel Gibson, a couple of other strong characters to make this movie a fun, exciting experience - one, that you should not miss if you like a good action-movie that's NOT about terrorists bombing cities, airports or holding people hostage.

Well, after some hard work downloading the 7 disks required to be the player of this game, wich is by the way HD installable I began by unpacking the damn sucker to my ost beloved disks....
WOW, 7 disks filled with mega tuff action, that was what I was thinking as I'd depacked all those damn DMSfiles!
Well, lets get on with the show, using the prepacked Installer (on disk 1) I got it all installed on my games partition. The installer even created a bootdisk... WOW! Nothing that hadn't been thought off, mayb my IQ wasn't couted for, but what the heck.... I'm lazy anyhow...
OK, full of excitement I rebooted my dear beloved Amiga with the predesigned bootdisk...
*WHAM* Right into an intro looking like someone familiar with ZX-Spectrum coding had done it.... In my opinion very poor, and rather disapointing! Well, i wait for the game to load the main part.... suddenly the DOS/CLI prompt apears.... NOT ENUFF RAM!!!!
$AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH *SCREAM!*
Well, now I'm stoned, what do I do... Well, why not use my brilliant IQ!!
Ìrebooting i deselect everything that's possible in the bootmenu except for my game partition, and looking at the startup-sequence on the disk i recon that the following command would get me up'n'going....
cd Games:SSF2
ssf2.exe HD
*WROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM*
Well, what was that ... YEEEEHAAA!!!!
Now we're speeding down the interstate Hwy. 14. Well, rather exhausted by all the distress gathered from the game needing too much RAM (I've only got one of doze' 1200'ers with 2mb RAM - remember!) I select soem assorted options (rather fulfilling optiions screen, set the game speed and difficulty, NTSC/PAL screenmodes and all that ... GOOD!), and start up DA GAME!
The first time i set the game speed to SLOOOW, and well frankly THAT SUCKS! *grin* So, NEVER EVER play it with the lowest possible gamespeed NOR with NTSC mode ... (lousy resolution)... I found the setup that suited me, PAL mode and middle game speed (rather fast in fact, but still possible to make it go crazy...).
With this setup I've managed to get bashed and bash some of the well known Characters... the names of them hasn't been changed, neither has the look, so the only thing that I couldn't remember were the special moves.... SHOOT, but I seemed to manage without.... The game has VERY good speed, and nice graphics, the thing that bugs me is the fact that the player(sprites/whatever) are rather small, the height of the game screen is about half the sceen, so a lot of space wasted to preserve the game speed.... BUT I beleave all in all a good sacrifice to get all the speed you need...
The game is still not as good as the Mortal Kombat series, bcoz' I WANT BLOOD, and frankly I CAN SEE NO BLOOD ... *grin* Anyways, the soundside is good, except for the mainscreen that's got NO SOUND at all, but who cares, you'll only be there for 10 seconds anyhow!
So I recoomand to download the game, it's nice graphics and gameplay, and the option to install it on harddisk is nice (gettign rather standard these days I beleave).
A note for the more hardcore SMASH'm'ALL'FLAT, DEAD and into a BLOODY PULP fans you'll like M.K. better, and for the more graphics minded players you might still like Shadow fighters or (the classic) ELF MANIA better. But for the ones that wanna get some REAL HARDCORE SPEED and some non-blood action this is an ok game, that I recommend, if you got a highspeed modem that won't rip the money off ya' downloading those seven disks ....

As the info file acompanying the release, by Prestige stated (may they rest in peace), this is YET ANOTHER DOOM CLONE game concept. The game is programmed by Black Magic, a name of comming fame maybe...
The game wich in this AGA version occupies two disks can be installed on your favourite hard-drive, a little note though: I recommend not installing teh game to SYS: with the acompanying installer, as the fooker copies the entire disks (including the startup-sequence) to your stated install directory/partition resulting in major CHAOS ... so ANYTHING BUT SYS: is ok!
Well, nuff said, lets get on with the exciting part of the show. The game shoul run on all AGA mashines, thats right from my basic nocando A1200'er and to the most genious A4040 (or '60 ,-) .... The idea is to kill off all targets that move, i say this becoz the only thing I can see on my std. 1200'er is something mooving (more or less). It's VERY poor graphics...
Actually the game has lots of options to adjust to good resolutions, so you MIGHT actually get a sense of whats going on, but then it's scrolling the sceen so damn slow, that you're killed b4 you even fire a shoot. I realize that this is, in my opinion, the best Doom clone out so far, but compared to the PC equivalents i.e. Doom & Descent... well go buy a Penthium 90mhz and play Descent instead, more fun, and not as bad gfx..
IF you've never tryed Doom or Descent on the P-see then you might be AMAZED
(commercial break : Get our fine SS2 Demo at a board near you 8-p )
Also more powerfull mashines might make it look flashy, but even at then I'd like to play Sensible Golf instead *grin*
As you might have guessed this is not a game that I would recoomend any standard 1200 user. IF you got some more power try it you.
You might become AMAZED (tm).
