Welcome
¼1¢6 PACMAG #38¼0
¢1Welcome to ¢7PACMAG #38¢1! And for a change
we can't say, that nothing has happened
in the ¢4Commodore¢1 saga because, as you
probably all know by now, C= has been
bought by the multi-national company
¢4Escom¢1, whose Danish boss is a former
C= Scandinavia employee! Escom will
continue to manufacture the ¢4Amiga¢1, but
will also revive the C= PC! The plans
for further ¢4Amiga¢1 - development are
very sketchy at the moment - we don't
know what will happen, but ¢4Escom¢1 has
made it clear, that they'll NOT just
produce PC's and Power PC's like every-
body else, so a ¢4RISC-based Amiga¢1
running both Amiga-software and PC
and MAC software is probably the way
it'll go - not bad - especially if
¢4Escom¢1 continue to develop the wonderful
Amiga OS. Well enough said about the
¢4Amiga¢1 - we're probably all happy that
the nightmare is over, and that ¢4Amiga's¢1
are going to hit the streets soon.
BUT this is ¢7PACMAG ¢1- and what do we
have for you this time? Well we have
the usual ¢4trader / board-charts¢1 of
course, and ¢4game-reviews¢1 and ¢4movie-
reviews¢1. We also have an interview
with ¢4Devilstar¢1, an article about
the irritating ¢4viruses¢1 destroying
lots of peoples HD's, and a look at
the many clichees haunting the movies!
We've got something about ¢4CD-ROM¢1, and
an Amiga-users view on the Amiga and
why it is such a wonderful machine, and
much more!¼1
¢4See Ya!
¼0¢8 And keep trading.

¢3 3 is dark red, ¢4 4 is red, ¢5 5 is light red

the last >@2< was to get the color back to what it was when we began..
in order to ¢6highlight¢2 some thing you would write : @6highlight@2

Devilstar VD/PB interview
¼1¢6 INTERVIEW WITH DEVILSTAR!
¢7¼0 ==========================================================¢1
Hello all, MeloManiac speaking! The super graphics-artist, Devilstar
has recently moved to Germany, to work on some games! I've talked to
Devilstar about that, the state of the Amiga, and more!
¢8D: Hi, I`m Devilstar/Virtual Dreams/Polka Brothers!
¢3M: You're one of the most known graphics artists on the scene - and even
if there should be somebody who don't know you by your name, he has
probably seen some of your work. Can you mention a few of the
demos/magazines etc., you've done graphics for?
¢8D: Sure, well let me see.. There was for RAW/Spaceballs, Upstream/Balance,
DanskToppen/Passion, The Off.Eurochart/Static Bytes(Estrup),
Hydra/Mr.hyde/Prestige, Pacmag(hehe), The Party 94, And Demos/compos:
DemonDownload/Silents DK, The ZINKO intro/Polka, No Name/Polka,
Prestige Crackintro/Prestige, Bobble Trouble/Polka, Prey/Polka, and MANY
Party Compos.. >:)
¢3M: I doubt that anyone wouldn't agree that you're extremely good at what
you're doing, and creates some really interesting and beautiful pictures.
Are people nicer to you, meaner to you, or is it the same, now you've
become so popular?
¢8D: Well thats VERY different from dude to dude, some dudes call Bodycount
to chat with me, and some comes to talk at partys, but also some dudes
are very afraid to chat/talk with me, and even I try to be as incoming
and try to get the talk to be easy. Humm just come and chat if I WANT!
But also the gfx are more easy to get released now. When I started the
gfx drawing it was VERY hard to get anybody to release my gfx, and I
thought I should NEVER get any released, but after I got some of it
in the TSL demos and some nice places at partys, everybody wants to
release 'em >:)
¢3M: Recently, you've become so popular that a German software house has
hired you to do the graphics for some games. How did you get the job?
¢8D: Humm that was kinda' Mr.Hydes fault (hehe. thanx mate!!). He called me
and said that a Danish firm called Brain Bug where seeking for a new
graphician. I called 'em, and talked about it, later on I got the job,
BUT the firm Brain Bug were moving/merging to Germany/Rainbow Arts, I
therefore had the choice of NO JOB or GERMANY :) .. and I can say NOW that
I DIDN'T regret moving! OFCOZ I MISS all u guys and the board and all
about Denmark, but I get money for doing my hobby and thats MY GOAL!
¢3M: You told me it was a nightmare doing graphics on a SNES, because of
the way its screen is build up of blocks that can have a maximum of 16
colours each. Would you prefer to work on the Amiga?
¢8D: Well it IS!!!! Well I WORK on AMIGA (ofcoz) but also on Mac, PC and
Sillicon Gfx! Well the prob. is that if u do a BLOCK (everything HAVE
to be blocks in the game projects) and if u do a blok of 8x8 pixels u can
ONLY have 16 colors in it and that have to be out of 256 defined colors..
SNES SUX BIG FUCKING TIME!!!!! :)
¢3M: What do you think about the state the Amiga's in at the moment. Would
you like to see the Amiga as the leading computer on the games market
again?
¢8D: OFCOZ I will, the Amiga is a great machine and I LOVE it!!
¢3M: I can imagine you're even more busy now, than you were when you were
doing graphics for demos etc. Will you only do graphics for games
from now on, or....?
¢8D: Well I'm VERY busy now and I have NO time for demos!! But I'll never stop
demo-drawing - I just have to get installed here in Germany! And then I'll
start demo-drawing for real again 100% !! :)
¢3M: When can we expect to see your Amiga-game hit the market - if there is
one?
¢8D: Well thats VERY hard to say because the Amiga is dead to EVERYBODY else
than US (scene freaks). Well I KNOW it's cruel words and I DONT THINK that
the Amiga will die, BUT my BOSS does :(
¢3M: What's after Rainbow Arts? More graphic for games on the cards?
¢8D: Well I really don't know, I guess I'll stay here for a while till I get
enough money to start my own DANISH company (game company ofcoz)
or I'll go to USA for some firm overthere!! :) :)
¢3M: Many people in the scene has, like you, started making graphics/music or
programming demos - what's your advice to them. Should they try to get
in contact with some software-houses, or were you, no offence, just lucky,
or had the right connections, to get into the business?
¢8D: Well that depends on where, and which firm, and still then, it's very
different, I guess if u think u have the skill and WANTS to do games,
then just send some stuff or even better GO THERE!!! :)
¢3M: Now you've tried both making graphics for demos and for games. Which is
the most fun, and the most satisfying?
¢8D: It's more EASY and more FUN to do demo-gfx! BUT it's more satisfying
with game-gfx COZ u get PAYED!!!!!!! heheeh....
¢3M: Yes, hehe, that's on of the big differences!;-) Can you make a living
from doing games?
¢8D: Well haha.. I have a MERCEDES!!!!! heheheh.. so... :)))
¢3M: That should explain it!;-) So when are you coming back to Denmark?
You have a board (BODYCOUNT) to run!;-)
¢8D: Well I guess I'll go to Denmark WHEN I got lotsa money to start my own
softwarefirm!! Coz thats my GOAL!!!!
¢3M: Thank you Devilstar - it's been nice talking to you - and good luck on
your games!
¢8D: Thanx pal!! Enjoy Denmark!! (I would, if I was there, sniff...) later!

Advice on VIRUS-protection
¢4========================== ¢7EVERY DAY A NEW VIRUS¢4 ==========================
¢1Warning! The file xxx contains a virus. These txt files are becoming more
and more common on the scene today. The past two months at least 10 new
viruses has hit the scene, leaving trashed HD's and pissed off people in
their trail. CED40.lha, LHA30.lha, DOPUS50.lha and ICOND13.lha just to
name a few of them. Assholes who call themselves Circle Of Power are behind
most of them and they have been traced to the sweedish scene where they
have managed to piss off quite a few people. The virus releases recently
seems to relate to a war that went on in the sweedish scene about 6-7
months ago. Some of you will remember a few txt files where a guy had made
it his hobby to hack BBS's and then format them. There were also made
statements about a crusade to 'clean the scene' and that is exactly what
seems to be going on now.
So how can I protect myself you ask? Is there any safe way to avoid
these HD trashers? The answer is no, you cannot protect yourself 100%
against a new virus, and right now they are appearing at a rate which no
anti-virus programmer can keep up with. But you can look for a few things
that would ring the alarm bell.
¢8FIRST OF ALL
¢3Is an archive full of shitty BBS adds and only one executeable with no
documentation, it almost certainly means trouble. NEVER EVER relay on a
program to do what the file_id.diz says it will do.
If there is a documentation then look for the programmers name in it.
if there's no name then don't run the file, there're not many people who
would release a program without telling the user who made it and where to
send bug reports and shareware fees ect.
¢8SECONDLY
¢1Is the executable still crunched when you have unpacked the archive? If so,
then it's another sign that something is wrong. Not many programmers crunch
their executables before they realease them. Try to decrunch and load them
into a binary editor and have a look at them. You don't have to be a programmer
to discover some nasty surprises. Common sense is all you need.
¢8ICOND13.LHA
¢3 That was exactly the case with ICOND13.lha. The file_id.diz stated that
it would speed up MagicWB icons up by 50% when they were shown on Workbench.
The program should also remove any unwanted tooltypes such as
'»»»» Icon by Martin Huttenloher ««««'
¢1 When the file was unpacked you would discover one executable which was
crunched and a documentation written in Swedish with no name attached to it.
It's really rare to see a program released without a doc written in English.
When the executable was decrunched and loaded into a binary editor for
a closer look, you would discover that in the buttom of the file the
following directories were mentioned: PREFS, C, DEVS, L and LIBS.
There are not many icons in the DEVS, L and LIBS dirs, most of you will agree
with me on that, and didn't all recently COP releases destroy exactly those
directories? In fact the file was a very nasty trojan which would remove the
pointer to the first datablock and rewrite a random number of files (50-100)
on your HD before it crashed the computer. That means that you had to reformat
the drive in order to get it to boot up again.
¢8THIRD AND LAST
¢3The archive name. CED40.lha and DOPUS50.lha, have you EVER seen major
updates of so popular programs wich over 90% of the scene uses, realeased as
LHA archives and with no major group name attached to it?
No I bet you haven't, and thats just another sign that something could be
wrong.
¢8BOTTOM LINE
¢1 The ONLY way to be 100% safe is to ALWAYS keep a backup of your boot
partition, and it should be no more than 1 week old. I got my boot partition
destroyed by the cop virus found in the LHA30.lha archive, but fortunately
I had an 2 day old backup, so all I really lost was some updated database
files.
If you think that backups is a hazzle and it takes too long time, takes too
many floppies ect., then just think (for 1 minute) about how it would be,
if suddenly your whole DEVS, L, LIBS, S and ENVARC were gone with the wind and
forever lost. Imagine how long time it would take for you to get hold of
everything again, and there's always something which you never will be able to
get hold of. Not very pleasent to think about, don't you agree?
Recently warnings went out about DPAINT50, the install script would
format your harddrive, this shows that no file is safe and a backup is the
only thing that protects you 100%.
¢3There's no sign of these virus releases are coming to an end, the latest
txt files indicate that in the coming months, many new HD-trashers will hit
the scene. One can only hope that the people behind them eventually pisses off
so many people on the Swedish scene that this gets settled the hard way.
Until that happens, a backup is the only thing that will save ya ass!!!
¢1We all love the scene, and there's no reason for Circle Of Power to destroy
the fun for us.

An Amigalovers point of view
¢3¼0--------------------------------------
¢5¼1 10 years of Amiga
¢3¼0-----------------------¢1 The Freak ¢3----
¢4 In 1985 the Amiga was released to
the public. Ah! The times. Who
doesn't remember our astonishment when
we saw Defender of the Crow, DPaint,
Juggler etc.? Those were the days.
Back when, the Amiga left everyone
stunned, it simply knocked your socks
off. That was ten years ago. This is
now.
¢5 The A1000 was the first Amiga, and
as such it featured Kickstart 1.0
(quickly changed to 1.1 as far as I
remember), ECS chipset and a whopping
256Kram! That's one quarter of a
megabyte. And still it multi-tasked
perfectly.
¢6 Ok, I'll quickly add that Workbench
1.1 (or 1.2/1.3) wasn't the best fo
systems to multi-task in. 1.3 wasokay, though. I remember doing quite
a bit on the good old A500 (which is
now sold but is in good hands), with
only 1MB of Ram. You could run
CLI-Master and CygnusED at the same
time, and still have room for stuff in
the RAM-disk. Try that on an 8088XT
PC! With the same kind of graphic
interface. No can do. Anyway, the
sad fact is that in these ten years
the PC has developed rather much.
¢7 Everywhere you look it's Doom-this,
Descent-that, Windows 99 or whatever.
I don't really care. The PC is now
the best console around. By saying
this I don't look down on the pc.
It's a compliment. But it's also one
of the most expensive consoles, and
soon it's not even THAT good. If you
saw what could be done with a 300
pound sterling Sega Saturn, you'd
NEVER buy a PC! But of course you
would miss out on all the really great
adventure games the pc has. I for
one, would like to have a pc, just to
play all those neat adventure games.
To hell with Doom and that shit, I
just want adventures ;-)
¢3 Anyway, I've had Amigas since 1987,
and must say that it has become a part
of me. It has grown on me, so to
speak. Approx. 8 years of using the
Amiga has given me hours of enjoyable
moments (and not-so-enjoyable moments
when something was wrong with it).
Many people turn on their computer,
play games on it, write their homework
on it etc. and maybe even enjoy using
it. Most of these people are PC
owners. What I'm getting at is the
fact that the term PC is wrong.
¢4 If a computer is personal, shouldn't
it have personality? This is
something which so-called PCs lack!
They are just clones or
IBM-compatibles. Wow. But the Amiga
has got personality. Bags of it,
actually.¢5 After thousands of hours in front of
Amigas, I've discovered how much they
have on offer. Today I don't see my
Amigas as computers. I see them as
friends. Yeah, go ahead, call me a
nut, but when I turn on my Amiga, I do
it because I know it and it knows me.
It feels like a real friend. Not that
I haven't got any real friends
(sometimes I COULD do with a few less,
especially when I've just gotten a
cool SNES game ;-), but whenever I
feel like I need some time on my own,
I turn on the Amiga, because she gives
me the opportunity to chat with
friends over the modem, write e-mail,
play games, make music, mess around
with PD-utils, etc.
¢6 Well, a PC could also do this, some
would argue. This is, to some extent,
correct. But not with the same kind
of style and grace. The whole Amiga
and her (ok, I AM a nut, refering to
my computer as a she!) OS is like
swimming. You can float around the
whole system, performing stunts and
generally feel very free and happy.
Using a PC for the same stuff is much
the same, only you're swimming with a
200kg stone tied to you feets which
are tied together.
¢7 You don't believe me? Oh yeah, well
then tell me why my PC owning friends
STILL sighs for something as good as
Workbench. As a friend said: 'I
surely hope that we someday will get a
system as good as System 7 (MAC) or
even as good as Workbench!'
¢3 8 years ago I bought my A500, I
remember it like it was yesterday. I
was in seventh heaven, even more than
when I bought my C64! All those
colours! The sound! The sheer power!
Today I own an A2000 and an A4000/040.
The A4000 has 14MB RAM (which does
much the same as a 32MB PC ;-) and
CD-ROM. Soon I will get myself a nice
Cybervision GFX card, which is faster
and cheaper than the same kind of cardon pc.
¢5 I have never regretted bying an
Amiga, and never will. We Amiga
owners have had a tough time the last
12 months, but now it seems to be all
over. Escom has bought the whole
shebang, and while I don't wanna sound
overly optimistic I feel that they
have the power and creativity to keep
the Amiga going, and perhaps even
making get the recognition it so
dearly deserves. I hope they put out
improved Amiga machines and would
especially like to see a RISC-based
Amiga with customchips and of course
running Kickstart/Workbench 4.0 as
well as Windows (NT) and System 7. I
know it can be done, the question is
whether or not it WILL be done.
¢4 There are several examples of just
how good the Amiga is, and I wish that
Escom would exploit some of the
possibilities by, for instance,
showing some of the great demos made
on Amiga in tv-commercials. They are
some of the best stuff made on Amiga
and would show people that this Amiga
thing can easily match PCs and MACs.
¢6 I also hope that now that the Amigas
future isn't so uncertain, the
software firms will start supporting
it again. I want games from
LucasArts, Colonization, Legend of
Kyrandia 2, more CD-ROM games etc.
Let's see what the next 10 years will
bring. Many people have abandoned the
Amiga ship and bought a PC. That's
their fault. I don't know about you,
but I'm sticking around.
¢2 Commodore is dead. Long live the
Amiga!

CD-ROM on Amiga
¢3¼0--------------------------------------
¢5¼1 The wonders of
CD-ROM
¢3¼0-----------------------¢1 The Freak ¢3----
¢3 It was getting on my nerves. That
sucker who goes by the name of Enzo,
had been talking my ear off, expres-
sing how wonderful a CD-Rom was. I
had never really thought much about
get- ting one, even though Melomaniac
had been raving about it too. But
then I ordered the CD-collection
containing every SNES game released
until January 1995, and then it was
time to get a CD-ROM.
¢4 I wanted it to reside in my A4000
but since I didn't have a SCSI con-
troller that gave me a problem. At
least until I found a CD-kit which
incl. a new E-IDE controller plus a
Quad speed (4x) CD-drive. Well that
was the solution, I could put my twoHDs and the CD-ROM on the internal
controller, leaving precious Zorro
slots available for my soon-to-be-
purchased Cybervision 64 gfx car and
whatever else I might come up with.
After having experienced my usual luck
(the company forgetting a cable,
having to wait a day more etc.) I
finally installed the drive and got it
up and running.
¢5 The manual had been somewhat con-
fusing, actually it even mixed some
things up, meaning that I had to do
the opposite of what was written! Oh
well that's life for you. But the
software installation went without any
problems, and soon I had installed two
programs:.
¢2SpeedUp - the software that patched
the OS to recognize the new enhanced
IDE interface. It has to be run, or
you will only be able to used some of
the connected drives. You only need
to run it once, it will survive
resets.
¢3AmiCDFS - The CD-Rom filesystem. The
version supplied only supports the ISO
9600 standard, but since most CDs
worth you interest is in this format
(I think) it's not much of a problem.
¢6 I had been smart enough to make sure
I had some CDs to check out if
everything worked ok. The Aminet Set
1 had arrived the day before, and I
had no problems using it. That made
it very clear to me. CD-rom ROCKS!
¢7 Being able to access something like
650MB on a single CD meant 1000s of
programs and that almost made me a bit
dizzy. Wow! Programs, LOTS of
programs! Later on I got hold of a CD
with fonts, and I was once again in
heaven. 1165 files with fonts really
warmed my little DtP heart.
¢8 Basically, what I'm saying is that
CD-Rom is a VERY good buy. If you areinto lots of programs, samples, pic-
tures, games, 3d-objects, textures,
fonts, or whatever - well then you
need a CD-Rom! Of course there's
always the possibility of playing CD32
games, but only a few are really that
much better than their A1200/A4000
counterpart, so that's not the
important thing.
Still not convinced? Did I mention
all the CDs with XXX-rated pictures?
That should do it.... hehe...
¢5 Short: Go get a CD-Rom. You won't
regret it.

Directory Opus 5.0 review
¢3¼0--------------------------------------
¢5¼1Directory Opus 5.0
¢3¼0--------------------------------------
¢8Disks: 1 HD: YES
Archive Name: DVN-OPUS.DMS
¢3¼0-----------------------¢1 The Freak ¢3----
¢3 Finally it arrived. Finally we've
got the new Directory Opus. Seldom
does a program cause so much eagerness
but I guess that the fact that DOpus 4
was one of the most used programs on
Amiga, made people very anxious to see
what could have been improved upon.
¢4 I myself had been using DOpus 4
until I saw the light in the form of
Browser II. Browser introduced me to
a whole new concept, namely internal
multi-tasking. But that wasn't all.
You could also have more than 2 dirs
active so when you where copying some
files you weren't stuck to watch the
boring progress indicator, oh no you
could go on using the program, for in-stance you could start unpacking some
of the files you'd just dl'd. This,
combined with a large increase in
speed, made me change to Browser.
¢5 Previews of DOpus 5 showed a pro-
gram which beared many resemblances to
browser, multiple windows and internal
multi-tasking, but still it seemed to
maintain the good old look of DOpus.
Even though I favoured Browser I still
liked the look of DOpus, and many PC
owners visiting me had given the prg.
a very jealous look, complaining that
nothing like that was available on
their machine. Well, I have seen a
program running on OS/2 Warp which
looks and functions very much like our
beloved DOpus, it is even mentioned in
the manual. When I changed to Browser
they couldn't understand why, even
though I demonstrated Browsers advan-
tages, they complained about the lack
of buttons and more GUI. Funnily,
that was also the reaction of many
Amiga owners running DOpus.
¢6 But now DOpus 5 is here, and even
though most of you have probably al-
ready tried it I'll still give you MY
opinion of it. It's... a bit better.
There. I've said it. DOpus IS
better, but not enormously better.
Here's what it's all about:
¢7 We've got the much wanted (by me)
internal multi-tasking, but not 100%.
I mean, when I copy something to a dir
I have to open a new window with the
same dir, to perform actions in it.
In Browser I could go on in the same
window, but perhaps that's something
to be implemented in later versions of
DOpus.
We DO have multiple dirs, thank God
for that. That is what make DOpus a
bit better. We have also got full
support of datatypes and locale.
Something which DOpus really needed,
at least in my opinion. But ok, if I
were to decide, ALL programs should
support locale and datatypes. Beforethose of you who haven't tried/seen
DOpus 5 starts to complain, here's a
brief description of the new things:
¢31. Multiple Windows. Each dir can
have a window of it's own, ie you can
open as many windows as you like.
Furthermore, each window has a set
user-definable set of buttons on the
top of it. Actually each window is
refered to as a LISTER, dunno why!
These buttons actually quite nice. I
mean, you have them very close to the
pointer at any given time, saving you
precious time. I didn't think I would
find them very useful, but they are
not really bad to have. Besides,
there is already some really nice
Magic-WB like buttons available, and
using them improves the look quite
much. The buttons can perform any
action you want.
¢42. Internal multi-tasking. Well,
it's needed to get anything out of
being able to have more than one
window. Basically it means than when
you have started copying 400 files
from one HD to another, you can go on
doing something else to another dir.
Sounds like nothing special, but once
you've tried it, you can't live
without it.
¢53. Buttons, actually a great whopping
lot of them! Almost everything is now
buttons, but the neat thing is that
you can decide if they should show
text or a graphical representation of
the button's action. It's easy enough
to design new buttons, and each set of
buttons has it's own window, and of
course you can place them whereever
you want and snapshot it all. The
same goes for all windows, sorry
listers (hehe).
¢64. Workbench replacement. You can
make DOpus 5 replace you Workbench.
Since DOpus shows all icons on it's
screen (even appicons) you could run
everything from DOpus. In theory thisis a great idea, but in practice it
doesn't always work so well. I tried
it, but unfortunately some of my
commodities had problems with it.
ARC-Handler and ToolsDaemon caused
problems, and I can not live without
any of them, so I returned to the
normal way - starting the program
iconified. But hey, at least you can
have a backdrop pattern or picture,
just like on your WB ;-)
¢35. Datatype support. Only for users
of Kickstart/Workbench 3.x, but it's a
very welcome addition. Not everyone
find it easy to define a filetype so
using datatypes makes it easier.
¢46. Locale support. This mean that we
could end of with a swedish, danish,
french, german, or polish version! No
problem here. A great thing,
something which is ALWAYS welcome.
Some people hate running software in
any other language than english, but
do they mind if a program is ABLE to
run in other languages? I don't think
so.
¢5 Well that's about it. I've told you
what I think of the program, and given
you some more detailed info. Now it's
time for the big question. Do I use
it myself? The answer is: Yes. So
far I do. But that doesn't mean I
have deleted Browser, I'm still not
fully convinced. But DOpus 5 does
have some nice things, it looks great
(the PC owners are once again sad,
knowing that they will never see it on
their machine), and it is MUCH faster
than DOpus 4. DOpus 4 was kinda slow,
but DOpus 5 runs at a very respectable
speed. Nice start Jonathan, now let's
make it the powerhouse we all dreamed
about!
¢6BTW: A lot of people reports problems
running DOpus 5, they talk of strange
crashes happening quite often. I
don't really know much about it, it
never crashed on me. I'm running iton an Amiga 4000/040 with KS/WB 3.1.

And now for something very unuseal. A
Lemmings-clone, or what??? Well, the
game starts out with a little history
about how the earth has been flooded,
and how a little fish-culture decides
to resque the human race.. So far, so
good..
¢7The you enter the mainscreen, where you
can select different things like, music
on/off, start level etc..
¢3Ok then.. Let's start the game.. Ahh..
Ready.. Looks like fish!!.. Ahh.. I
wonder what this button does.. Groovy..
The fish morphs into a torpedo.. Cute,
but what now??.. Let's try this one
then.. Ahh.. The fish i just clicked
on, starts to swim to the top of this
weird tubesystem.. Arg.. It's beeing¢2sucked into somekind'a sucking device..
WOW.. Strange.. Wonder if that fish
died.. Think it was called Dave.. Ups,
no.. There it is.. Now it's walking on
some table, on which the entire tube-
system is placed.. Ahh.. There's
another tube.. WOnder how i'll get the
fish into that one.. Perhaps this
spring can do something.. Wups..
Jumping fish.. OK then.. Ahh.. That
must be the exit.. Yeah, and then up
there, and yep.. Just finished the
first level..
¢6Well.. This game is just like Lemmings,
but with fish instead.. And thiese fish
can obviously also do the walking
thing.. And there is some buttons you
have to push in order to start some
air-streams that can take your fishes
up or down..And that's about it..

High Seas Trader review

¼1¢5 High Seas Trader
¼0¢2----------------------------- ¢9Mickey ¢2--
High Seas Trader reminds me quite a lot
of the old game Pirates, except for the
fact that HST has better graphics and a
more sophisticated gameplay.
¢6The installer for this game is somewhat
different from the usual C= installer,
and that's quite a shame, since you
have to undms the entire archieve to
disk, instead of using RAD, as I
normally do.
¢3You start this game by chosing your
nationality, your name and the name of
your ship. Then you start out in town
where you can hire crew, buy charts,
equip your ship and so on. And you of
course also leave for the high seas,
and do some trading. ¢7On your way around the world, you'll
find out that you do not know all the
seas you can travel in, so you might
wanna buy a chart, or perhaps hire a
chartmaker to do a chart for you.
¢8You have a couple of ways to make
money. You can help the pretty ladies
you can find in the towns, by taking
them and there stuff to a certain town,
or you can do some trading between the
towns.
¢2When you travel between the many towns
you might just bump into some of you
enemies, and then you will of course
have to deal with them the hard way.
¢5Unfortunately I didn't have so much
time to play this game, so there is
probably a lot of facets to this game,
that still needs to be examined, but if
you are into strategi, or you simply
Loved pirates, then this game is
definately worth wasting your time on.

Sensible Massacre 2 review

¢5¼1Sensible Massacre 2
¢3¼0--------------------------------------
¢8Disks: 1 HD: YES
Archive Name: HF-SMS2.DMS
¢3-----------------------¢1 The Freak ¢3----
¢3 Ok, this is an Amos game, but do not
let that fool you! I was very skep-
tic too, but since Hellfire usually
release ok stuff I tried to dl it.
¢4 The game is very simple, but not
excactly for the sensitive type! I
mean the game is about killing people
by running over them with a bulldozer
and throwing handgrenades at them.
But for us who don't give a damn the
game is nothing short of extremely
amusing.
¢5 Anyway, you control this little
happy fella who drives around in his
nice little bulldozer. The scenery is
a soccer field, I think it has someconnection to the (hm) plot which I
remember to be something about crowd
control (let's see THIS kind of crowd
control in the real world!). There
are 3 types of people to kill:
¢3 Walking people. Just run over
them, and they die. They leave
something behind which can be
both good and bad.
¢4 Parachuting people. Lob them a
grenade, and they're done.
¢5 Motorcycling people. Beware of
these. Running over them drains
your energy. Better get rid of 'em
by throwing them a pineapple.
¢6 As told, the dead people sometimes
leave behind a goodie in the form of a
football. Depending on the colour of
the football, you get more energy,
more grenades, all people die etc.
After having killed a few people, a
door appears, and you have to run into
to it as quickly as possible, in order
to proceed to the next stage.
¢7 Sounds dull? Well it ISN'T! It's
actually very amusing. The graphics
are quite ok, nothing special but
adequate, and the sounds is also ok.
But first and foremost the gameplay is
good, clean FUN. That's why I can
only recommend this game. It is btw
shareware, and the fee is a lousy 5
pound sterling which gives you the
source code (if you want it) and all
the author's previous work. Quite a
good deal, and the programmer cer-
tainly deserves to do well, since he
is obviously quite skilled.

¢5¼1 CONSOLE CORNER!
¢3¼0-----------------------¢1 The Freak ¢3----
¢4 Welcome to yet another edition of
the Console Corner. The summer is ra-
pidly approaching, and we all know
that the result is fever games. But
even though this month has been rather
quiet, the few games released have
been of good quality. I mean, just
check out the Super Bomberman 3 review
and you will see for yourself.
¢5 This month also brought us a new
Konami release, and their games are
ALWAYS welcome! Mostly because they
release quality stuff. Go to the re-
view to find out whether or not they
can keep up the good work.
¢6 Even though the SNES already has the
perfect soccer game, Int. Superstar
Soccer (Perfect Eleven) a new soccer
saw the light this month. The name iseither Head-On Soccer or Fever Pitch
Soccer, it seems like the game cannot
decide for itself. I must say that my
expectations weren't very high but
only by checking the review, will you
be able to find out if it's worth
getting.
¢7 For the racing freaks we got Super
Drift Out, an overhead racing game.
It is actually some kind of rally, but
do not hold that against the game.
It's a bit different from your
standard overhead racing game, since
the screen rotates instead of your
car. Read the careful review to be
enlightened!
¢4 Rumours have it that Ultra, the new
machine from Nintendo, will be
released this autumn. I got to admit
that I am looking very much forward to
it, coz I just KNOW that it will be
something special. It HAS to be, and
Nintendo knows it. Ok, you and I
won't be able to get one until about a
year (mainly because they are going to
sell like F*CKING hotcakes!), but I am
very eager to see what it will be able
to do. Ah well, you can always dream.
¢5 I've just bought myself a brand new
copier, a Super Wildcard DX 32Mb,
mostly because I'm selling the good
old Double Profighter to a guy who
needs to be able to run Sega stuff. I
am still waiting for it to arrive,
along with my CDs with the complete
collection of SNES games. If you
think I'm looking forward to that, you
are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!
¢6 That's it for the introduction, now
go on and read the reviews. See you
next month, or...
... If you happen to own a snes, but
cannot decide if it's worth it to buy
a copier, you could always meet me at
the South Sealand Party and get a
demonstration. I'm sure you will
agree on the fact that a copier is a
most excellent investment.

¢2'NO PATCH ON PERFECT ELEVEN?'
¢3 Another soccer game sees the light.
How do they think they can top Perfect
Eleven? They've got a serious
attitude problem. And seeing as this
is from U.S. Gold (who isn't the one
releasing all the great titles), this
game is almost dead on arrival.
¢4 Upon loading it seems quite normal.
You can play a tournament or exhibi-
tion. You can play up to 4 players
(yeah!) and there lots of teams! Much
more than Perfect Eleven. But what
about the game itself?
¢2'HMMMMMMMM...'
¢5 - was what my friend said when hefirst saw the game. ¢4'I don't like
the isometric 3d-view'¢5. I explained
to him that it really wasn't so bad,
and soon after he agreed. You see,
Head-On Soccer turned out to be a
pretty good soccer game, and while it
isn't better than Perfect Eleven, it's
really a very nice game, mostly
because of one nice feature, namely
the feature which gives each player
very different abilities.
¢2'I CAN DO...'
¢6 Some players have a star over over
their head. This indicates that they
are... star players! Some are more
'star' than others, since some of the
players have special skills. I like
one of the german players who could
kick like hell! Pass the midfield
with him, and you could use his
special power, or rather unleash it.
It's a monster of a kick, so much that
the ball catches fire! I was pretty
surprised the first time I experienced
it but boy, is it fun or what!
There are, however, some sad things
connected with this feature. You
would be surprised how bad some of the
players are, some can't even do a long
pass without fumbling. But the good
players more than make up for this, so
all is not lost.
¢2'A-OK, AN NOT 2 BAD!'
¢7 All in all, Head-On Soccer (or Fever
Pitch Soccer, how should I know) isn't
gonna outpass Perfect Eleven. But the
question is: Does it have to?
¢3 For some mysterious reason, some
people actually disliked P11, and
found FIFA International more enjoy-
able. Well, this game is what I think
FIFA should be like: Fast, but easy
to get into, easy to get into, but
still possibility of doing awesome
stuff. Just play against Brazil, and
you'd see some stunning goals! Theseguys know how to play ball. Actually
they are way to skilled, but what the
heck, it's only a game after all.
Anyway, like all other games, you'd
still be better off playing 2 or more.
It'll make the game much more
enjoyable.
¢4 What more can I say? It's not a
spectacular game, more like a 'rather
ok game' Oh, put a sock in it. The
game is fun, so just go and download
it or maybe even buy it. Great stuff.

Metal Warriors review

¢5By :¢3 Konami (yeah!)
¢6Size :¢3 16Mbit
¢2'BIG K IN THE HOUSE!'
¢3 Well Konami's surely one of the most
rocking games manufacturers, I mean,
they have released a lot of high, if
EXTREMELY high-quality games. Who can
fault Perfect Eleven? Only heathens
fails to love the game! Anyway, when-
ever Konami releases a game, you can
be sure that people will dl it.
This time they have teemed up with
none other than LucasArts! Quite why
they have done this I don't know.
They could easily sell the game using
their own name. Of course the game
would have to be good, and even Konami
can't release all-good games.¢2'BIG IS BEAUTIFUL YOU KNOW'
¢5 It sure is, and big pays a large
(didn't wanna say big again!) role in
this game. The plot itself is fairly
boring, you are in a team of wanna-be
heros who are on the good side in a
war. The intro is very nice and
stuff, but the intro on Super Turrican
2 was much better. Oh well. It's not
all intros, there's also a game to be
played.
I mentioned that there is something
BIG in this game. The big thing is
you or rather, your Metal Warriors.
The metal warriors are giant robots in
which your character resides. They
are about 12 metres high (approx.
according to my eye and in relation to
the size of the humans) and there are
more than one type of metal warriors.
They each have different skills, and
some of them are actually rather neat.
¢2'BIG DEAL!'
¢6 Ok, ok. What you have to do is to
complete different missions. You are
briefed before each mission and then
thrown into the action. In mission
one you have to get in an enemy
building, find one of ours (I'm
already into the game's spirit) and
scramble as quickly as possible. It
may sound like you could be wandering
around for hours, and you could - if
you'd survive. But fortunately you
can bring up a map which shows the
building's lay-out (sketched, no
detail here) and it even shows you
roughly where you should go, using
that neat little thing called an arrow
(boy, what these Konami guys come up
with!).
Ok, so how do we get around in this
big fella? It's easy. Your standard
metal warrior can fly, others can't.
Of course you have a nice laser which
can be fired in almost any direction. But since your robot functions like a
large person, you can also do some
fighting stuff, yup your robot can
slash the enemy with a sword. Or at
least THIS robot can. Some robots
can't. But all robots can pick up
some of the nice things lying around
the stages. There are better weapon
to be had, more energy etc. Now,
there's a funny thing connected to the
energy in this game.
¢2'WHAT? NO INFO? AM I DEAD?'
¢3 Normally you have some sort of
energy bar to show when you're gonna
die. But not in this game. So how do
you know when it's time to die (I just
love saying that since it's my fave
frase from Blade Runner and...
whoops, got carried away!)? Just look
at the robot. It goes from being
bright and colourful to grey and dull,
and when the end is near you can't
fire any weapon, and smoke evolves
from the robot's head. This is kinda
imprecise, but it doesn't really
detract from the otherwise cool game.
But what is it that is cool about it?
You just wander around in a large
robot, shooting and rescueing etc.
¢2'BIIIG MISTAKE!'
¢4 There's much more to this game. I
mentioned other robots. What I didn't
mention, is the ability to climb out
of your robot. You can make your
little character jump out of the large
'suit' and jump into an empty shell.
But beware! When you abandon you
robot, an enemy could come running
into the picture and climb into it,
and then you're the little guy
(literally). It doesn't take many
shots from the big guys before your
character dies. But at least
maneuvering the little guy is faster
than the big guys.
But let's imagine you do make it to
another robot. You then climb intoit, and hey presto! New weapons, new
skills etc. Like the robot on the
second (or was that the third? I've
reviewed too many games this month!)
level where you can enter that really
nice robot with a f*cking awesome
machine gun. Kinda like the one
Arnold uses in T2. Talk about fun!
Just walk (coz the guy can't fly,
arg!) around and blast the little guys
and some big guys, tonnes of fun.
Alas, this is not all that is cool
about this game (sorry).
¢2'YOU WANT BIG? YOU GOT IT!'
¢5 In one of the missions you have to
make sure that a ships reactors aren't
smashed, coz your leaders need the
ship so you have to protect the
reactors with your life, something of
a task when the evil guys come
swarming like bees! But with full
energy and a couple of missiles you'll
be laughing! You then have to fly to
the cockpit, jump out of the robot and
shoot the pilots. Neat and
movie-like. And that's not even the
funniest level. I like the level
where you have to smash a ship's
defence (of which there are a LOT) get
in it, kill the pilots, and then fly
the ship into the bay! This is where
you will get BIG. The ship is WAY to
big to fit the screen, so it's a kind
of majestic feeling when you put ship
back in place.
Speaking of movie-like, the whole
game does play like a story. This
makes it more exciting and I must say
that I got rather involved with the
game. Right now I'm having a bit of
trouble with a certain stage where you
have to defend one of your big
starships. It's f*cking hard, even
with the ultra-tough robot you got.
But a game SHOULD be challenging, so
this is a good thing.
¢6 If you are still not convinced that
this is your type of game you can goand download it anyway. You see,
there's also a nice 2-player mode
included. You choose your favourite
robot, a stage, and you're both off to
seek and destroy. Although there are
better 2-player games than this, it's
a good thing Konami included this
feature. Now if only they would make
a Perfect Eleven 2 with 4-player
possibility, lots of ENGLISH speech,
and.. oh well, I guess I just have to
play this one until the next Konami
game comes along. And you know what?
I really don't mind.

Kyle Petty's No Fear Racing

¢2'BORN TO BE WIIIIIIIILD!'
¢3 Racing games are long between on the
SNES so then this appeared, I was
quite excited. 24Mbit meant that it
could be a really whopper of a game.
So naturally I quickly loaded it, and
here is what came out of it.
¢4 After loading the game you are
greeted with an ok intro, which sets
the atmosphere quite nicely. The
music and graphics looked fine, so my
expectations rose. I quickly pressed
start on the Single Race option, and I
was able to equip my car in the Speed
Shop (how's that for an original
name!?). There were better Fuel
Systems, new tires, more nitros (which
gives you a boost when you're racing),and you could also change the number
of your car (wow, TRENDYYYY). The
graphics were still cool and slick, so
I repeated the success and pressed
start once again. I was then thrown
to another place, namely the racing
court.
¢6 It looked fairly similar to some-
thing I'd seen before. Yes, the view
was your bog-standard behind the ve-
hicle view. But initially the gfx
seemed ok - that was until it began
moving. Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear!
¢2'LAME'
¢5 This game was lame, I thought. But
I wanted to give it a try, coz perhaps
I was just scratching the surface.
But no. After playing it a couple (8)
of times, I've discovered the
following about the game:
¢61. It's slow and ugly.
2. It's boring to play.
3. It's waaaay too easy.
4. It's utter crap and not very good!
¢4 Therefore I won't waste more time on
this review, so take it away!

Super Bomberman 3
¢3 -/- Super Nintendo Reviews -\-
¢4Title:¢3 Super Bomberman 3
¢5By :¢3 Hudson Soft (yeah!)
¢6Size :¢3 12Mbit
¢2'NOT AGAIN!'
¢3 Just when you thought that nothing
could be added to an otherwise excel-
lent game (Super Bomberman 2), a new
version appears. Oh dear, it's just
more of the same. Most of us already
know the game in it's Amiga version,
namely Dynablaster. Unfortunately,
the follow-up was only released on
SNES and Sega, but I don't care since
I've got a SNES. For those of you who
cannot remember Dynablaster, it's a
nice game where you control a little
fellow who put bombs around the whole
place. Actually not, but you have to
put the bombs so they blow up all the
nasty meanies (the cutest looking you
have ever seen). Once done, proceed
to next level.¢4 But what made the game completely
mindblowing was the two-player mode!
Come to think of it, you could even
play FOUR (with an adaptor). Then you
could walk around and try to sneak
your (former-to-be) pals into a bomb
while fumbling yourself into one of
your own bombs. The game is hilarious
with two or more people.
¢2'SNES TIME'
¢5 The SNES Super Bomberman 2 did a lot
to improve an otherwise brilliant
game, and I must say they succeded.
It was one of my best multi-player
game, at least until Bomberman 3
appeared. Now my life evolves around
that game! It's fantastic as a
one-player game, bags of playability,
great funky music and sound effects,
combined with cute graphics, but play
it with 2, 3, 4, or FIVE people, and
the hours whizz by! I had invited two
friends to play it, and since they are
both avid game-players, they
represented a fair challenge. We
started playing around 12.
¢2'AIE! GET AWAY! SH*T!'
¢6 Hours went by, only they seemed like
minutes. We explored all the stages,
and quickly found our fave stage, the
stage with leap pads. Put a bomb on
one end, and jump on the other -
result: a flying bomb, landing right
next to your (former) friend! Tonnes
of laughs! This game ROCKED! Once
again we were going insane because of
the music, the enormous bomb power-ups
one could collect, the suprises, just
about everything kept us going, right
until 21:30! Then we had a bite to
eat, and continued to around midnight.
After they left the house I sneaked in
a few one-player games... geez, I was
stunned.
¢2'SO WHAT'S NEW?'
¢3 Super Bomberman doesn't game youTHAT much new. But there's more than
enough! Before, when you were playing
the 2+ player game, the characters you
controlled looked pretty much like
eachother, the only difference was the
colour of their suit. Now it's a dif-
ferent story. You can choose between
8 players, each differing quite dras-
tically in looks, so this time there
will be no 'Shit I thought I was the
other one!' Apart from that, there are
some great new stages, some where you
can ride in a mine trolley, experience
an exploding volcano, water, bridges,
underwater levels etc. You can also
get a bit of help in the form of a
bunny! Find an egg, crack it, and you
can mount a cute bunny/kangaroo look-
a-like! It will function as a shield
and protect you against a bomb or an
enemy. You want more? What about
more sophisticated enemies, some that
eats your bombs, fly, jump, dies and
resurrect themselves, you name it, the
game has got it!
¢4 Oh, I forgot to mention the great
tag-team matches! Two people could
team up against two other people!
Believe me when I tell you that this
game is too good to be missed! You
simply NEED this game, whether you got
a copier or not, just go and GET it!
F*CKING AWESOME STUFF! 'nuff said.

Super Drift Out

¢4Title:¢3 Super Drift Out
¢5By :¢3 ???
¢6Size :¢3 16Mbit
¢2'RACE IN YOUR FACE'
¢3 As you may have discovered, there is
another SNES racing game on trial this
month. I could save you from reading
the review of the other by saying
that... this is the one to get, if
you wanna race on your SNES. It's
better. But how much better, and why?
¢4 Super Drift Out looks rather
ordinary when you first glance at it.
And right after you have loaded the
game, you are greeted with commercials
for Toyota etc. I promptly thought
that this is one of those games that
lives on a well-known name, but I must
admit that the game turned out to be
pretty ok.¢2'NEWS? WE DON'T NEED ANY NEWS!'
¢6 That's good for you, because SDO
doesn't really offer that much new.
The game is a rallye/racing game
viewed from overhead. Haven't we seen
this somewhere before? Yes, we have.
There is, however, one thing that
makes it stand out from your ordinary
Amiga/PC game. Instead of rotation
the car when you make turns, the
screen rotates. This does take some
getting used to, but in the end it's
not that hard to live with. Makes the
game a bit refreshing.
¢2'REMINDS ME OF...'
¢5 Erm... well, I'm not quite sure
what this reminds me of, but somehow I
feel I've seen a game very much like
this, completely with rotating screen
and all. Anyway, this game is not
really bad. You race around on
different tracks which are placed all
over the world. There's the standard
racing-track like tracks, desert
tracks, winter tracks (situated in
sweden) and you even get to race in a
city which I can tell you is hard!
Racing on such small roads with so
little room for skidding calls out the
very best in driving skills. I must
admit I didn't manage to complete this
level.
¢3 There is some help in the way of
arrows which points out which way you
should turn, and without these the
game would be nigh-on impossible.
Some of the cars are really fast, and
some are easier to control than
others. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you
that you can choose between different
cars, one of which is... a Toyota!
(biiig surprise!) Each car is
different from the others, mainly in
handling and speed.
The fun thing is not only the fact
that the track changes, it's also the
fact that the time changes. Sometimesyou race at night, a thing that can
(and will) make it harder to avoid
oncoming opponents. Some levels also
are contests where you race against
the computer, others you just have to
complete in a set time etc.
¢2'COMPETITION RULES'
¢7 As said, the game is really fun, and
after some time you have raced the
tracks more than a couple of times and
you will have set some records on each
track. These records can be saved,
and you could compete with a friend,
battling for the best time. This is
no big deal, but it does add some more
fun to the game, and I DID compete
with some friends ('cut those corners!
The corners!'). So what we have here
is a well put-together game which is
worth downloading, especially if you
are a speed-freak. Take this and
avoid Kyle Petty's No fun, sorry No
Fear Racing.

AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE
¢3===== ¢8AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE ¢3=============================== ¢8by MeloManiac ¢3===
¢8An Awfully Big Adventure ¢1might as well
had had the title ¢8An Awfully Dull
Adventure¢1, because this film, starring
¢8Hugh Grant¢1 was a neurotic, superior
English stage director, doesn't have
that much on offer. Stella is a young
English girl, who's dreaming of a
carreer as an actress. She's hired by
Meredith Potter (¢8Hugh Grant¢1) as a
stage assistent. At the theatre she
becomes a witness to all the tragedies
going on in the theatre-world - many
people drink, and Meredith is abusing
his young male workers (sexually).
One day the legendary actor O'Hara
comes to the theatre, to take on the
role as Captain Hook in Peter Pan.
He knows Meredith and quickly finds out
what's going on. Also he's a romantic
dreamer type, and Stella falls in love
with him, and they start a sexual
relationship.
That's roughly the movies plot.
¢4The big problem ¢8Mike Newell¢4 (who also
directed the really great ¢8Four Weddings
and a Funeral¢4) has with this movie,
is kind of the same Robert Altman
had with Pret-a-Porter he can't
really make up his mind about which
direction the movie should move in.
Therefore the characters seems pretty
thin, and you can't really relate to
them - only ¢8Alan Rickman¢4 as O'Hara
is interesting, and Stella, played
by a newcomer whose name I've forgot
is all right too. But - the story,
the movie wants to tell, is very hard
to define, and thats what makes the
movie a lot less interesting - and more
boring - than it should have been.

¢8Jim Carrey ¢1of ¢8The Mask¢1 and ¢8Ace Ventura:
Pet Detective ¢1 fame is back, in this
hillarious comedy about two brothers
(¢8Jim Carrey¢1 and ¢8Jeff Daniels¢1) with-not-
so-much brains! ¢8Carrey¢1 is a chauffeur,
¢8Daniels¢1 owns a hair-cut shop for dogs!
One day ¢8Carrey¢1 drives a girl to the
airport - she leaves her bag on the
airport-floor for someone to pick up,
but stupid as he is, ¢8Carrey¢1 thinks that
she's forgotten it! He desides to
deliver it back to her, at the ski-
resort Aspen, and he takes his brother
with him.
As you've probably already figured out
a lot of crazy things happens, both
on the way to Aspen, and at the ski-
resort. ¢8Carrey¢1 is great and funny
in his role, and his ugly hair-cut
makes it all the better! Daniels is
also very funny - he's usually seen
in more serious roles, but he proves
that he can do comedies as well.
¢4The humor ranges from the most corny
¢8Leslie Nielsen - type humor¢4, to the
darker and meaner kind. And the movie
IS very funny - almost all the time.
Even the ending is extremely good, and
not one that you'd expect.
So - if you enjoyed ¢8The Mask¢4 (I did),
or ¢8Ace Ventura: Pet Detective¢4 (Haven't
seen it), then you'll probably love
¢8Dumb and Dumber¢4! And when you consider
that new comedies are very far apart,
a GOOD one shouldn't be missed!

Movie Cliches
¢1MOVIE CLICHES
¢3Hi and welcome to this months special movie-feature, on movie-cliches!
These are things that we see in almost all movies, and, at least if
it's about computers, we probably laugh at them. There's a special
section on computer-cliches here for you to laugh at!
But let's get on with it. All of these examples were taken from an
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about cliches in movies, obtained
from the InterNet.
¢1BOMBS
¢8We'll start with some 'explosive' cliches (bad joke!).
¢3- Bombs always have big, blinking, beeping timer displays
¢8- When you cut the wire to the detonator, the timer will stop. You will not
be able to do this, however, until only one second remains.
¢3- All wires have different colors, so the hero can easily differentiate
them when he has to cut the right one.
¢8- Explosions always happen in slow motion.
¢1PHONES
¢3- All phone numbers begin with 555.
¢8- A ringing phone is usually picked up within 3 seconds.
¢3- Don't give the person on the other end of the phone time to say what they
have to.
¢8- You also never have to look up a phone number, for anyone.
¢3- When a phone line is broken or someone hangs up unexpectedly, communication
channels can be restored by frantically beating the cradle and saying
'Hello? Hello?'.
¢8- Always knock over the phone if it wakes you up. If you are expecting a call,
make sure that you pull the covers up completely over your head so that
knocking it over becomes easier. All houses have phones next to the bed.
¢1RADIO, TV & VIDEO
¢3Right! And now for some cliches about radio, tv and video in movies....
¢8- A character turns on the radio just in time to hear a special
announcement or some important news item. Then turns the radio off.
ex.:
CLICK
'Three escaped lunatics have been spotted in <wherever listeners are>.
blah blah blah.'
CLICK
¢3- The phone rings. Caller says, 'You better check out what's on the news
on Channel 13.' He turns on channel 13 and gets the report from the
beginning.
¢8- All VCRs in films are always cued up exactly to the portion of tape you
want to show someone.
¢1COMPUTERS
¢3And now for something we know about: COMPUTERS!
¢8- Word processors never display a cursor.
¢3- All monitors display inch-high letters.
¢8- You can gain access to any information you want by simply typing 'ACCESS
ALL OF THE SECRET FILES' on any keyboard
¢3- All computers are connected. You can access the information on the
villain's desktop computer, even if it's turned off.
¢8- Powerful computers beep whenever you press a key or whenever the screen
changes. Some computers also slow down the output on the screen so that
it doesn't go faster than you can read. The *really* advanced ones also
emulate the sound of a dot-matrix printer.
¢3- All computer panels have thousands of volts and flash pots just
underneath the surface. Malfunctions are indicated by a bright flash, a
puff of smoke, a shower of sparks, and an explosion that forces you
backwards.
¢8- People typing away on a computer will turn it off without saving
the data.
¢3- When the power plant/missile site/whatever overheats, all the control
panels will explode, as will the entire building.
¢8- If you display a file on the screen and someone deletes the file, it
also disappears from the screen (e.g Clear and Present Danger).
¢3- If a disk has got encrypted files, you are automagically asked for a
password when you try to access it.
¢8- No matter what kind of computer disk it is, it'll be readable by any
system you put it into. All application software is usable by all
computer platforms.
¢1HACKERS AND MODEMS
¢3... And here's something that's REALLY for us: Hackers and modems!
¢8- A hacker can get into the most sensitive computer in the world before
intermission and guess the secret password in two tries.
¢3- Complex calculations and loading of huge amounts of data will be
accomplished in under three seconds. Movie modems usually appear to
transmit data at the speed of two gigabytes per second.
¢1SPACESHIPS
¢8Spaceships! Yeah, let's hack a little on sci-fi's, shall we?
¢3- Spaceships make noise!
¢8- Spaceships always fly perpendicular to the same axis. When two spacecraft
encounter each other, they're always aligned on a plane and never
approach at odd angles.
¢3- All spaceships, no matter how small, have internal artifical gravity and
no matter how badly your ship gets pummeled by the evil aliens in the
evil alien ship, no matter how many external panels get blown away, no
matter how many sparks or how much smoke pours out of your control
panels, the artificial gravity will always keep working.
¢1Yep, that's it. I hope you've enjoyed those cliches as much as I have, and
next time you watch a movie, you'll laugh at some of the filmmakers'
stupidities!:-)
