Skid Marks 2

Skid Marks 2
----------------------- The Freak ----
--------------------------------------
Disks: 8 HD: YES
Archive Name: PSG-SM1.DMS - PSG-SM8.DMS
--------------------------------------
Well, I must say that I was REALLY
looking forward to this game! I was a
great fan of Skid Marks, and just the
fact that the game was written in BASIC
(Blitz Basic) made it quite interesting
to look at. It whizzed the cars around
at a very respectable speed, and the
screen scrolled smoothly. Just great.
Some might remember that the first
Skid Marks game was NOT hd-installable.
At least not until someone (GOD) made
a hd-installer. This time it's a bit
better, but still not QUITE good. You
can indeed install the game to hd, but
not the track disks - of which there
are four. A bit of a bummer! Luckily
MOK of Prestige made a nice program
which incidentially installs the track
disks. Very nice.
Ok, so you wanna know if the game
itself is any good. Let me be quick
and tell you the truth: YES. The game
IS good - much better than SK2. Byt the
way, ACID themselves likes to call this
game Skid Marks V2.0 instead. And in som
ways I can see why. Much of the game is
very similar to SK. But this time we've
got 24 tracks and 8 cars to choose from.
And what about the nice new HIRES mode?
You can choose to put the screen in
HIRES (no lace thanks god) and you are
steering tiny cars, almost too tiny. The
good thing is that it's far easier to se
what is ahead of you, and since some of
the tracks are quite devilish, you could
end up needing it. The screen can also b
split in two or even THREE. You can play
up to 4 people on one machine. Either by
using 4 joysticks and a 4-player adaptor
or by using two joysticks and the key-
board for the remaining two users.
But it doesn't stop here. How about
linking up with a friend, using a
normal nullmodem cable, and you could
play up to 8 (EIGHT) simultaneously!
We've tried 3 players here at my place
and it was BAGS of laughs! But what if
your best friend lives miles away from
you? No problem, SK2 has MODEM support.
Dial him up from SK2 and you are ready.
Earlier I mentioned something about
8 cars being available. You can choose
from a Mini, a Camaro, a Porsche, a cow
a Truck, a Buggy and others. But as
something COMPLETELY new and unseen
(this is a world premiere in the video
gaming world -exclusive for Amiga!) you
can race with CARAVANS! How's THAT for
something new? And it really DOES make
the game funnier, coz you can bump into
the opponents with the caravans, but
okey they can also be a pain in the as.
If u are not racing with caravans, you
can always have fun racing in reverse!
SK2 doesn't care! Totally awesome.
Eight disks might sound like a lot
to download, but there are ways around
this. Disk 1 is the main disk, you GOT
to have it. Disk 2-5 are trackdisks. You
COULD settle for just disk 2, but if you
really doesn't want ALL track disks, get
disk 4 and 5, that's where the new track
are. Disk 6 and 7 are AGA car disks, and
disk 8 are the ECS car disk. So for AGA
owners you could settle for just 4 disks
and ECS owners could use just 3 disks.
It is up to you to decide. I got the
whole thing - nicest to have it all.
This game is so great that we have
been talking about actually BUYING it.
We could give around £10 each and get a
copy (just one, sorry) of the game, just
to make sure quality Amiga software is
supported. The Amiga is the best all-
round computer, and we want it to STAY
that way. Well none of my pc-owning
friends ever buy software and that does
not kill it, so I guess the Amiga won't
die too, but anyway, just ask some of
your friends to cash in. It doesn't
matter if you are TEN people sharing a
game - as long as you do it. That counts
for all the games you PLAY.

When I first saw this game, and the
name Virtual Dreams below, I thought
that VD finally had used their great
skills, on making an awesome game, but
when I tried playing the game, I rea-
lized that it's not the VD we know from
the demo-scene who was behind.
If you remember the game Project-X,
then you almost know what T-Racer is
about, except that T-Racer dosn't reach
the standards of Project-X!!
The game starts with a VD logo,
and some sampled speech, and then a
¾titlescreen.. Here you can select how
many lives you want, and your skill-
level! But nomatter how good you are,
this game is much too difficult.. I'm
usually quite good at these games, but
T-Racer is way to hard... Perhaps it's
because that i haven't played this game
very much, or perhaps it's because this
game just aint very good...
After the two first levels(which are
alike), you enter a bonuslevel, where
you are supposed to fly through some
kind'a vector tunnel, and avoid some
walls. This part is quite funny, but to
easy..
If you really like shoot'em up games
or just want a real challenge, then DL
this game.. Else you'd better leave it.

Console Intro
SNES RULES!
Well at least in some areas. That's
why I'm proud to present this new
section of PacMag, the Console
Corner. At first it is mostly for
the SNES since I don't have a SEGA
and since my Gameboy copier STILL
haven't arrived. But anyway, I'll
try to include reviews of the new
SNES games, and perhaps give you
some tips now and then. If you
have questions about SNES and
copiers, you could do worse than
writing me a messy on SUSPERIA.
Write to 'THE FREAK'.
I'm no expert, but I'll certainly
do my best to help. I'd very much
like to get in touch with all other
SNES/Copier owners. I got my copier
around september '94 thanks to my
good friend Deathknight who almost
forced me to buy one. Best £300 I
have ever spend (my A500 was £350).
So as I'm relatively new, I have
missed out a lot of the older games
which I'd very much like to somehow
get hold of. If YOU have got some
of the older titles, I'd be very
interested in hearing from you.
I've got tips, tricks and solves
for a lot of SNES games so if you
are having trouble with a game, you
could try writing me and perhaps
I'll be able to help you. I will
include all letters in PM, but will
of course respect wishes to remain
anonymous.
This issue we've got some great and
some less great games. But the
point is that lots of games are
still being released, and the SNES
is still quite a powerful little
machine. Programmers are doing
things that noone thought they
would ever be able to do. Oh and
there's actually also a DEMO scene
on the SNES. A very small and in-
active demo scene (only for copier
owners, of course), but it's there.
Anyway, welcome to this first edi-
tion of Console Corner. I hope you
enjoy the reading, and if not that
you tell me what is wrong. Like all
other people I only accept con-
stuctive criticism ;-)

Title: Captain Commando
By : Capcom
Size : 16Mbit
'OLD-TIMER'
This is a conversion of a rather old game. I think it's from 1991 or 1992.
But since it wa an enjoyable beat'em up, who really cares. All I care about
is the quality.
'PICK ME!'
The story is the usual. Captain Commando (who comes up with these names?)
and his gang are going to save the earth by killing all the bad guys and
mutants and mad scientists etc. Ho-hum. It already sounds boring, doesn't
it? But since one HAS to try, I picked out the first of the four selectable
characters. His name was Jennety, a zombie-looking guy who is very skilled
with his two knives. The game started, and I almost started to scream. The
'Stage one' text scrolled J-E-R-K-I-L-Y onto the screen, and I was almost
in tears. What had they done to this lovely game? But my worries soon
vanished! I started to play the game, and found out something interesting.
'FUN'
The game was fun. Well more than fun, rather fun I might add. What makes
this game so much better than Undercover Cops, is the satisfaction you get
out of giving a nice smack in a gob. It's much more fun in this game, it's
like the programmers enjoyed making in, resulting in a much more enjoyable
romp than the mildly interesting UC. You see, CC has got great moves, lots
of enemies, more variety and better gameplay.
But the graphics are also better, although the sound is nothing special,
kinda standard smacking sounds. But who gives a fuck, it's fun and you can
play two at the same time. The only really annoying thing about this game
is the difficulty. It's too easy. It was not until I set it on hard I had
trouble reaching the last level. But play it on hard with a pal and you are
going to have lots of fun. Nice one Capcom!

Title: Chrono Trigger
By : Squaresoft
Size : 32Mbit
'INTRODUCING'
When I got my first RPG game on the SNES I wasn't really into RPG. But
Breath of Fire soon changed that. I really played that game a lot, and I'm
looking forward to see the sequel in english. Later on I played Final
Fantasy 3, a most excellent RPG which had me quite engrossed. But ok, the
one I've enjoyed most to date, is the old Secret of Mana. This is simply
one of the best games EVER made on any machine. Take a bit of adventure, a
bit of RPG, a bit of action, mix them all with 3-player possibility, and
you have one of the most awesome games ever. Yes, Squaresoft know what they
are doing, and this time they are really up to something.
'HUUUUGE!'
Let me start by saying that this is the japanese version I'm testing. That
means I don't understand much of it, but I can still play the game and
enjoy it. What strikes me most about the game, is it's size. It's big!
32Mbit is only 4 Megabytes, but this game feels much bigger than any of the
Amiga and PC games I've tried. I don't know HOW they do it, but it's done
here. And it's amazing how much graphics and sound they can squeeze into
such a relatively small amount of memory. You see...
'EXTRAVAGANZA'
This game is an example of HOW graphics and sound should be. All aurals and
visuals in this game can be described with two words: Incredible
Atmospheric! The music is fantastic, the graphics continues to stun me and
everything is so cool!
'BATTLES!'
I really like the battles in this game. You can choose 'real-time' battles
or standard RPG battles. Well I enjoy a bit of action so I choose
real-time. And boy, is it fun to play. After some time you can perform
amazing moves in battles, you can combine actions and arg it's so great I'm
having trouble describing it! You feel really powerful when two of the
members of your team attacks a monster simultaneously, and the third member
finishes off with a mighty blow, taking perhaps hundreds of hitpoints!
Christ I want the english version of this game. It's set to be one of the
most Awesome RPGs EVER on ANY machine. It's as simple as that. Worth
getting a SNES + Copier for! Watch out for the review of the english
version.

Title: Looney Tunes Basketball
By : Sunsoft
Size : 16Mbit
'JAM! DUNK! AIN'T I A STINKER?'
Ah! The glorious sport of basketball combined with the wonderful craziness
of looney tunes. Gotta be great. And yes, it IS great. It's a f*cking cool
game to put it right. But let's have a closer look at it.
'CAST'
The game itself is pretty simple, two teams consisting of two people each,
struggle to put the ball in the opponents basket as many times as possible.
Guess you didn't know THAT, huh? ;-) Anyroad, since this is looney tunes,
one could be forgived for believing that the characters from those cartoons
are featured in the game. And yes, some of the most popular ones are here.
We have Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, Wile E., Sylvester, Marsian, and others. All in
all there are 8 characters to choose from.
'WILD 'UNS'
Control of the characters is very much like NBA Jam. The only different
thing is that X is used to switch between different special moves, and A
executes them. But each special move cost money. Additional money can be
picked up from the court, since they are laying around. These specialities
are what makes the game so wacky. There are dozens of weird and wonderful
things to do. Here are some of them:
LONG RANGE Player attempt a 3-point - but in a special way :)
CREAMPIE Throws pie in face of opponent - beware, the pie
functions as a boomerang!
TIMEBOMB The ball is turned into a timebomb and cannot be thrown
into the basket. The unlucky players who has the ball
when it blows up, is stunned for a while.
TELEPORT Teleports the player close to the ball.
VEGAS Starts a one-armed bandit - gain extra points.
ORBIT The court becomes very dark as if it becomes night.
FORCEFIELD Makes a player stronger.
DEFEND This one can only be done when you don't have the ball.
The player attempts to defend the basket in a special
way. We're talking 1-ton weights, Lightning, Silly
disguises etc. you name it we got it :)
But the fun doesn't stop there. Oh no. The game features a CODEHUNT part.
Here you are shown a SNES controller, and it is then up to you to track
down some movement/button press codes. Here are some of the codes I've
found so far (thanks to Claus Frandsen for assistance!)
Earthquake Press up 3 times then R or L button.
'Here boy!' Move pad from right to left in a clockwise motion and
press either R or L.
X-Ray Press left 2 times then X.
Short fuse bomb Press down 2 times then X.
Invisibility Press X 3 times then R or L.
Morph to Sylvester Press R or L 3 times then X
Morph to Bugs Press X, R, X, R, X, R.... etc. until it's done.
'Gimme da ball!' Press R, Y, R, Y then X.
All moves should be executed in game for effect. Be do note that they are
not all for free - so you gotta keep collecting money.
Well that is almost all I've got to say about this great game. The whole
thing sports absolutely GREAT animation, funky music, hilarious sound
effects, awesome gameplay (4-player option RULES! Hi
Claus/Michael/Kenneth), and so many funny touches I could go on forever!
But I won't.
'TIMES ARE A-CHANGING?'
Are Sunsoft changing their attitude? Perhaps. After some disappointing
platform games, their are really back in biz. This game ROCKS the place and
I just want to say that the afternoon I got it the whole city knew it -
since we we're laughing out so loud. Funniest afternoon in years! Get this
game - even if you don't have a copier, just go and BUY it!

Title: Rockman 7
By : Capcom
Size : 16Mbit
'7?'
Well this is kinda like Mega Man I think :) but ok it's a Capcom game and
they deliver the stuff we want. But number SEVEN? Hm...
'NEWS - UH-UH!'
There's not much in the way of news. I mean, this one looks very much like
all the others in the series. But it's a quite good platform game, with
looks of fun stuff in it, and it is certainly challenging! Once again you
are the guy with the blue suit who must battle the professor's forces (all
his robots and stuff) before saving the world once again.
'BEGIN - AGAIN?'
The game is divided in five areas. Each area has a theme which is connected
to the boss of the ares. Like the junk level has a robot made of junk as a
boss etc. You can play the levels in any order, but the question is: Does
is matter? I kinda like this game, but is has one MAJOR flaw which no game
today should have. When you die, it's go-back time. You don't ALWAYS go ALL
the way back to the beginning, but most of the time you do. And if anything
is frustrating - this is it! I HATE that shit. Oh well there's password to
be used, but only after completing a level. Geez...
'TOO BAD'
This could have been a very good game. In certain ways it IS a very good
game. It's a shame that Capcom has wasted perfectly good graphics and sound
(and to some extent gameplay) on this game when they make such a fatal
mistake. Starting all over each time is something you did in 1985 - not in
1995!

Title: Super Turrican 2
By : Ocean/Factor 5
Size : 16Mbit
'RECOGNIZE ME?'
Surely we have seen this somewhere before. And yes, we have seen the
Turrican series on the two very best computers ever, the C64 and the Amiga.
Both versions of the game were extremely well done, and to say that they
were both milestones in gamemaking, would be no understatement. Anyway, a
sequel soon followed, the - in my opinion - ultimate shoot'em up. The music
and graphics in number one were good, but number two set new standards. It
was incredible what could be done with a standard A500. I particularly
remembered number two because of the music - best music ever in a game.
'NO PIECE OF CAKE'
To convert this game to the Super Nintendo AND make it just as astounding
as the Amiga version, would seem to be quite a task. Maybe that's why
neither Super Turrican one or two is 100% the same as the Amiga games. The
original Super Turrican was quite ok, and honestly I didn't expect too much
of the sequel.
'PLAYTIME!'
After loading the game, you are greeted with a nicely rendered intro which
tells the plot behind the game. As usual it's some evil dude wanting total
power of the universe etc. I watch it a bit and then push the start button.
At first it all looks very familiar, actually it looks very much like the
first one. Combined shoot'em up and platform. You still guide the in a
Turrican suit around, collecting power-ups and shooting baddies. Nothing
new here. But at least you've got some nifty new weapons. First there's the
hook. You can use it for several things. Throw it at the roof to 'hang
around' or maybe play tarzan a bit. But it can also be used to grab
power-ups which would otherwise be out of reach.
Next is the freezer. It's a sort of beam which looks very powerful, but it
can do much more than freeze the enemy. This, however, can be very useful
in many situations.
The last 'new' weapon is the laser. Well, strictly speaken it's not new.
But it's SO damn great. And it looks f*cking great!
'I'M FED UP WITH PLATFORMING!'
I was playing a few levels when something happened. No more platforming
here. This game is multi-styled! We have the basic jump'n'shoot levels, but
there are also flying sequences, you know the fly-into-the-screen kind of
sequence. Like the 'Going-down-the-water' level. It looks like you are
sucked down, and it's also quite fun. After this level there's an
underwater level where you zip around in a submarine. Oh, there's also a
level which looks quite much like the old game Axelay - only this time the
programmers know what they are doing. It rotates so smooth.
Imagine flying on the surface of a small ball with everything appearing
quickly from the horizon. It looks nice and IS nice. That is one of the
things that makes this game rather good. But there's more.
'HEY BOSS!'
The Bosses. They may not be the most spectacular bosses ever, but boy are
they fun to fight! I like fighting in the mouth of the sandworm, but I LOVE
fighting with the giant spider. This sequence is so cool! You are jumping
around on a rotating web, using your hook to hang tight. It's a marvellous
scene, and almost worth it all!
And that's about it. There's dozens of levels, everything is great, it's
hard but that's better than being too easy - something that has haunted
many SNES games. Super Turrican is one tough cookie. But you wanna know the
best thing about the game? The ATMOSPHERE! The graphics do a lot, and while
the music is nothing special when you listen to it on it's own (even though
the very talented Chris Hülsbeck made it -cheers!) in conjunction with the
whole game it is BRILLIANT.
'GOING HOME'
It sounds like this is a MEGA game, but actually it's not. It's just damn
good. I wish it was as great a leap in SNES gaming as Turrican 2 was for
Amiga gaming, but that just didn't happen. It's still an excellent game
which all shoot'em up freaks should own. Thumbs up!

Title: Undercover Cops
By : Varie
Size : 16Mbit
'BEAT ME UP, SCOTTY'
Yes folks, it's another SNES beat'em up. Like we haven't seen enough of
those. But okay I love beat'em ups so no problem with me. And since this is
a conversion of a quite fun arcade machine, there's no reason to be mad.
But...
'WALLPAPER. EXCITING. YA.'
While the game is an okay conversion it's like they tried to make it very
good but gave up in the end. It's got a standard story, there are three
undercover cops who must beat up all the bad guys and destroy all criminals
in town, and of course they are all cool with lightning reflexes, bulging
muscles, and good looks. You can choose between a Charlie Sheen with beard
lookalike, a Dolph Lundgren lookalike, and a nice chick who is fast. All
ok, and there are SOME fun elements in this game.
'WEAPONS!'
I particularly like using the Dolph type, mostly because he is the best
with one of the most amusing weapons. Sometimes you will find a big pillar
stuck in the ground. Move your character over to it and press the punch
button like crazy, and the guy/gal will begin pulling the pillar up. When
you have it you can use it to SMASH the brains out of the bad guys (and
girls, check out the boss in level two - fat ugly bitch or what!). The
Dolph-type has an advantage with this pillar. Because he is so strong he
can swing it around in circles, thus hitting people in front AND behind
him. Very nice. Unfortunately the pillar gets smaller and smaller each time
you hit a person.
'DIFFICULTY'
I want a game to be challenging without being frustrating. Sort of like
Turrican 2 - hard, but when you progress you feel like you've done a good
job. The adrenalin is pumping. That's how a game should be. In Undercover
Cops it's a whole other thing. There are certain baddies who are extremely
annoying, and when you finally beat them, you don't feel happy, you feel
lucky. Because it was all luck, and there's no certain way of beating them.
And I think 'gee I'm never gonna get this far again, I don't even wanna try
because it was luck all the time and that shit sucks.' Too bad, because
this COULD have been a very good game. But because of the '92-like graphics
(with slowdown, aaarg!), bad difficulty, and NO two-player option (AAARG!),
the scores can't get much better than these...

A little IRC-info.
IRC (Internet Chat Relay).
We all know of chatting on BBS'ES, that be with sysop's or other people
being online. The limitations of how many people chatting at the same time
is of course limited to how many nodes a board got. It seems more fun
to chat with a number of people instead of just one person, and if you're
in the luck of having INET access this is possible.
I first started to fumble around with IRC a couple of weeks ago, and I must
say that I've stayed hooked since then. To chat on Internet is a totally
different thing than on ordinary BBS'ES. There is, you could say, a 'few'
more people to chat with.
When you hook up to the IRC you can chose between hundreds of different
>channels< of which can be joined for chat. You can find subject as;
sports, cooking, sex (very popular !!) and many more - it would be nuts to
list them all here ;) When you've found your desired one, you join it and
you're on to typing land. Of course there are more and less interesting
channels, and some of the more fun ones are the Amiga channels.
Some of the most popular amiga channels are:
#amiga (general chat about amiga stuff)
#amigapl (games talk mostly)
#amigascne (scene talk)
We're gonna look a little closer on the #amigascne channel which a lot of
sceners have found their way to. Here you can meet a lot of sceners from
all over the world (mostly scandinavians though). People chat about many
things and sometimes there's even a fight (persons throwing each other
off the channel - very fun to watch).
It always seems like there are at least 10 people online at one time, but
that doesn't mean that conversations a going wild, they could be chatting
privately. Through the last couple of weeks I've kept an eye out on the
people joining the #amigascne channel. I think it's amazing how many
sceners that really are on INET.
This is just some of them:

This channel is definitely worth checking out, so if you've thought of
getting on the net this should be reason enough. But I warn you, I chatted
for over one hour the last time from my home. It CAN be rather expensive.

Logic Bulletin Board System v1.01
LogicBBS is 'easy to use' and best software available which already, at its
release, got 1000's of doors available through the AmiExpress door support.
Currently LogicBBS is being distributed as freeware, but this is the final
release which comes out as 'freeware'. This is allthough limited in nodes
available. Sysop got 5 nodes available in the freeware version and this
is the only limit of LogicBBS currently compared to a full commercial version.
And 'freeware' version cannot be updated without buying the full product.
If you do buy our software, you get:
- Tools to make your system look better.
- AmiExpress to LogicBBS ,userdata & Messagebase, converters.
- doors made especially for LogicBBS.
- Full support from our WHQ in Denmark.
