Editorial: Only Chartmag 2006-2016 by Browallia
Didn't we eat our spinach properly, or why are we still doing this?
Shouldn't it come to a time when new generation of Amiga kids could take
over this legacy so could just rest....?
Dear reader,
Dear voter,
Dear follower,
Dear Amiga stalker....
(no reindeer, X-mas is gone!)
We are proud of this legacy, to keep the momentum bouncing. Someone expressed
this to me like "a Chart mag belongs to the scene, and the scene is love, and
love is AMIGA". For me and the team behind, we do believe in an Amiga scene and
the scene deserves a chart mag. This time, we did it on three platforms (A500,
OS4 and Android) to reach out as many as possible.
A quick check is that we got about 100 positive reactions after the
announcements of VS#7, anonymous calls not included. Then every third had the
time to vote. So before I forget, thanks to all who voted or positive feedbacks!
Statistically, a common voter fills in 65% of the voting sheet, prefer
categories like best demo with 97% of interest to fill in it, and 68% could fill
in all five fields here. In contrast, very little interest was shown in the best
Handle category with less then 50% of voters and a third of these, just wrote a
single name. And.. not to forget.. a common voter is a man, eat bananas, like
glenz polygons, is mid-age and grey haired.
We would gladly see some other magazines out in the Amiga scene again. That's
why I was happy to read about about Spaceballs' new diskmag "Irregular Review".
That's why I disagree with sentences like it's outdated with diskmags and
chartmags in 2016.
Reason? Well with that logic, it would be outdated to use your Amiga at all in
2016. But we still do, and Amiga scene is alive.
The effort behind this issue, is much more than seen. We started out this
autumn with project group consisting of members from Void and from us.
In Nukleus we rebuilt the web and in Void a complete new engine was developed
(see text from hukka below). We announced in over 20 channels including
Facebook, podcasts, web portals and local communities in five languages.
It's a vulnerable part the votes but to face the fact, this is mirroring the
scene, and amount of votes are the same since we started around 2004 when
Eurochart by IRIS was still alive.
To wrap up the editorial of the topic: a forced monopoly of the only chartmag
for a decade. Let me humbly announce, that we look forward for anyone else to
try the art of characters. In the end, it's fun, and it's worth it. I have this
wet dream of a researcher writing a thesis about scene culture narrowed to the
Amiga. A PHD student just can't ignore the time stamps and voices of digital
magazines. Even if the scene is on the Internet, the Internet is not Amiga.
Only Amiga is. So it's questionable how a decent research would look like
when isolated on Internet.
The frozen snapshot at this very moment can be read here, in this issue.

Editorial: help I can't think of a witty title by hukka
If you're reading this we actually managed to finish and release this thing,
probably! I've always wanted to write a diskmag engine (because I'm weird like
that) and now I finally had an excuse to do it. In the end I ended up having to
finish the code in a real hurry because of deadlines, but everything should be
in a working condition, more or less. I wanted to include more sophisticated
features like text colors, inline images and proportional fonts, but maybe these
will be implemented in a future release...
All complaining aside, this was really fun to do! The Amiga is such a fun
platform to code for.
Have a good 2017!

The Bringers of Light by Puni/Void
Goldfish, a user on the Amigaworld.net discussion forum, posted an interesting
thread on the 20th of December this year. The topic was what kind of
achievements we've seen on the Amiga scene this year. The new AmigaOne X5000
computer got a mention, as well as the new Amiga 1200 cases and the Vampire
turbo-cards. There has been a ton of activity on the Amiga in 2016 ranging from
new games to solid hardware, so it can be hard to pick just a few to mention.
What I missed in the thread though, was the abscence of Amiga and/or Amiga
inspired podcasts! These shows are very entertaining (but also informative) and
is currently reigniting the Amiga spirit in people who had lost interest years
ago. For the folks still into the Amiga, it has become an important venue for
information, network exchange and so forth. In this respect it's worth
mentioning the many YouTube-channels out there providing Amiga content, like
Kuokka's music channel and the Guru Meditation guys.
In this text I'll be having a quick look at the three dominant Amiga podcasts of
2016, namely The Retro Hour, Amigos Amiga Podcast and AMIcast.
It's Retro Time
---------------
In 2016 we've seen the rise of a new show that has gained popularity through the
entire Amiga community, but also reaching enthusiasts on other platforms like
the Spectrum, Atari, Nintendo or SEGA. This show is called The Retro Hour and is
being hosted by two british gentlemen, Ravi Abbot and Dan Wood.
Mr. Wood is well known for his YouTube channel (Kookytech) where he does reviews
of hardware and lots of other interesting Amiga stuff. Recently he posted a
review of the new Prisma soundcard and also of the Vampire for the Amiga 600.
Mr. Abbot is using his Amigas for DJ'ing, as well as making various Amiga
related videos. He also uploads old recordings he has from Amiga events, making
sure history is taken care of. His main music speciality is chip-music.
So how popular is this show? According to the official website of The Retro Hour
(theretrohour.com) they have an average audience of about 12,000 every week.
This is an impressive number and I will not be surprised if they reach out to
even more people next year.
In each episode they have an interview with a "celebrity", for example a game
developer or notable Amiga fan like Trevor Dickinson of A-Eon Technology.
I don't know how they manage to score interviews with former CEO's of game
companies, but they do it again and again. The interviews are professional and
always interesting. Personally I've learnt a lot of new facts through this show,
especially about what was going on behind the scenes in various companies back
in the days.
I can see The Retro Hour growing even stronger in 2017 and I'm sure we have a
lot to look forward to. One wish from me is that they'll start doing live shows
from time to on Twitch, making it possible to interact in real-time with them.
It'll be interesting to see what the next year has in store for fans of this
show.
West Virginian Amiga Fans
-------------------------
Two guys from West Virginia in the USA, Aaron and John (Boatofcar), are behind
the Amigos podcast. This is an Amiga only show and focuses on the latest news
concerning the platform, reviews of games and much, much more. They started out
with an ordinary podcast, but have ended up with video too, so that you can
either listen to them in the car or watch them on the device of your choice at
home or someplace else. Recently they hosted a Christmas event on Twitch where
the fans could chat with them and participate in real-time competitions with
various give-aways. This was a success and it'll be fun if they'll do it again
some time. After what I've seen on their blog, they will do an event celebrating
episode 100 when the time comes.
I've read many postings on forums from Europeans that find it interesting and
refreshing with an American perspective on the Amiga and I agree with that.
Their background is quite different from ours, since the Amiga was more of a
graphics workstation over there (big box versions more popular) and the market
for gamers being more orientated towards consoles like the SNES and the Mega
Drive.
Beside the podcast that is aired every week, they are uploading gameplay videos
of Amiga games (sometimes other platforms too). Those are fun to watch and it's
worth mentioning that John is often playing some of the games he is recording
for the first time.
They have a good presence on the web as well with the Amigos Amiga Blog
(amigospodcast.com). Notable contributors are Chris Foulds and Dreamkatcha ("the
gangsta from Manchesta"). Dreamkatcha goes into real depth in his posts and
often discover very interesting facts. Well worth reading! Sometimes I suspect
him having been a games journalist in the past, but that is just a hunch.
Amigos have made major progress in 2016 and I believe this will continue in
2017. They've come a long way since they started out and is gaining fans all
over the world.
AMIcast
-------
Krzysztof Radzikowski a.k.a Radzik is the man behind the AMIcast show. Ever
month he does an interview with an Amiga personality. In the last podcast he
talked with Hans de Ruiter, the man behind the Radeon HD drivers for AmigaOS 4.1
FE. Earlier he's been chatting with people like Petro, Jim from Gateway 2000,
Chris Young (Netstuf) and BigGun of the Vampire Project. All his podcasts are
available to listen to from his archive and is thus a valuable source of
information on a wide range of topics.
AMIcast differs from the two other podcasts, since it has an Amiga NG
perspective. Radzik is an AmigaOS 4 users and this is reflected in the podcast.
He is very knowledgable and has even written a book about getting AmigaOS 4 up
and running on ordinary PC-s through emulation. The other two podcasts are
retro/classic shows, so it's great that we AMIcast bringing in some variation.
There is a lot happening with Amiga NG these days (new hardware from A-EON, OS
updates, MorphOS etc.) and Radzik does a good job bringing this out to people.
It'll be interesting to follow AMIcast in the year to come and I hope Radzik
will continue his good work.
2017 - Happy New Year and Wishes
--------------------------------
In this text we've been looking at the three major podcasts in the Amiga
community. Who knows what 2017 will have in store for us? I have a feeling we'll
be seeing more from these guys, but we might see new people entering the
podcast-scene as well. Maybe some will make an Amiga demoscene podcast where
they talk about the latest news concerning groups, new productions and so forth?
What we do know is that these podcasts are injecting positive energy and good
vibes into the Amiga community and that is a great achievement in itself. It is
not only new hardware and software that makes the Amiga live on, but a healthy,
creative and vibrant community.
Thanks for reading and please enjoy the rest of Versus. Amiga forever!

GERP party report by Malmix/Nature
Here's a small report from the Amiga centric demo party GERP 2016 held between
the 2nd and the 4th of September.
The party was held at 'Kulturhuset Valhall' (culture center) in Skovde and
arranged by the groups Traktor and Nature, both having their headquarter's in
this otherwise frequently rated as Sweden's most boring town.
Around 80 people showed up to the event. A majority of the visitors were
Swedes, but some international guests also showed up. Among them were Bifat/TEK
who by his presence became the first non-nordic visitor in the close to 15 years
old history of GREP/Gerp parties!
The demo group Insane was represented with around ten members and scooped nice
party ranks and prices in all Amiga-related competitions. Among the visitors,
there were also members from groups such as Tulou, Ephidrena, Loonies, Pacif!c,
UpRough, Planet Jazz, Focus Design, Scoopex, The Gang and Nukleus. The Friday
offered social cozy'ing and creative fiddles on products. The day ended with
"fast music"-compo where the goal was to compose a 4-channel module with a set
of premade samples during one hour.
The result widely spread with quality and funny entries. Winner was
Corpsicle/Insane (who got a free beer for his nice contribution).
The Saturday started off with breakfast for those who hadn't already filled
their stomachs with hotel breakfast. Chucky/The Gang repaired hardware with a
glowing and glueing passion so the capacitors rained all over the place. One or
two beers were consumed and the nice party atmosphere of course reached its peak
during the evening when it was time for music- , graphics- and demo compos.
Focus Design defended their Amiga-demo title well deserved with "Aulun Baulund"
and for the third time got their name carved (dymo-printed) into the trophy.
Bitflipper from Insane and Rebels won graphic compo with a magnificent Amiga 500
picture. The music compo were dominated by a handful of musicians namely
Wasp/Pacif!c, Obbe/Traktor, Mygg/Insane, Tecon/Planet Jazz and Alpaidus/Insane
who all achieved good ranks in at least two categories. Most successful was Wasp
winning chip music compo and also winning the 4-channel compo in coop with Obbe.
Two modern demos (even if released on 30 years old hardware) were released in
the "other platform" compo. Panda Design won with their c64-demo with social
media as topic and Five Finger Punch snatched the second best with a Spectra
video-demo with Pokemon Go topic.
The Sunday morning also started off with a small breakfast before the prize
cermony. After that it was time to go home. All in all it was a great party and
it is pretty likely that it will take place again next year.
See you then, all demo-maniacs!

How many kings are left? ....BOOM and finally checkmate mate! Finally another issue arrived and we are happy to announce another coop. On the final day of the year, what could be better to write about than the complete hardware reference manual in this scroll text? haha just kidding. Or? Are you curious about which demo grabbed the first place, or if your favorite coder made it to the top? Well, I more or less wonder what to cook for dinner to the new years party tomorrow. After some work with this production from Nukleus and VOID, I must say, that I now more or less look forward to the masqerade party tomorrow too! haha its gonna be a freaking party in best burlesque or twenties style.. Ok, time to end text here, but happy new year and cu in 2017! ..... Versus - you are not the only one!
Browallia on the keys. just want to send out a huge thank to the Versus team... Puni, Rumrunner, Powerslave of VOID for great support! Then Menthos, Cefa68000, Smaugur of Nukleus. And last to hukka for this cool intro and the OCS version! Thanks guys! Boom! Suddenly it's hukka typing! Did you ever ask yourself, "Am I keeping up with the Commodore? 'Cause the Commodore is keeping up with me"? Whatever your answer, it is irrelevant. I will now tell you the beautiful story of Commodore. It all started in 1887, when Commodore Jackson made the first mechanical pet. He called it the "Sega Master System". 100 years later, he invented the first computer. 37 years later, he invented the second computer. This computer contained so many bytes and punchcards that it was almost disgusting. However, around this time Commodore's worst enemy, Atari Jackson, released his own mechanical pet/computer, which he called "Atari Jackson's Atari Computer". It was a very fast computer but a bad pet because it could not move. That's it. That was the story. If you didn't like it please hex edit this file and provide your own.
