How to send Clip-arts and photos?
The clip-art support is very bad this issue, maybe because the last issues didn't mention the format of the cliparts. So here it is again:

INSTRUCTIONS
THE SCREEN
At the top of the screen you see the titlebar, in which the titles of the different pages are displayed. With some functions you need to enter a string in this titlebar.
Below the titlebar we have the textscreen. In this screen all the text, messages and menu's will be displayed.
Just below the Textscreen, you see a slidebar, which indicates at what position you are in the current text.
At the bottom of the screen there are the control panel and two picture displays.
MAIN CONTROL
You can control Chit-Chat with the mouse or the keyboard. The control of all the menu's is the same. Move the pointer with the mouse or the cursor-keys and select by pressing the left mouse-button or return. To go one menu back press the right mousebutton or ESCape.
CONTROL PANEL
The control panel consists of a few buttons to control the Chit-Chat. I will describe them shortly on the next pages.
BARTYPE
FULL: The selection-bar will be drawn as a filled rectangle.
LINE: The bar will be drawn as a dotted rec- tangle.
SPEED
SLOW: The text will scroll slow.
FAST: The text scrolls faster.
AUTOSCROLL
ON: The text will scroll automatically when you move the pointer to the left or right.
OFF: You'll have to click the left mousebutton on the edge of the screen to scroll the text.
SCROLL
SINGLE: The text will scroll only one page at the same time.
DOUBLE: The text will scroll two pages at the same time.
VOLUME
Change the volume of the music, by moving the slider.
FADE
ON: Enables fading of the text
OFF: Disables fading of the text
SLIDEBAR
ON: You can see the slidebar
OFF: You can't see the slidebar
?: You have already discovered this button.
X: Double click to quit the Chit-Chat.

HOW TO EDIT MESSAGES
Once again I will explain the way how to send the messages for C-C. Just type your message and include the information of the sender and the receiver (Name, Group, Country and a birthdate if possible).
All messages sent on disk have priority, and you will get your disk back with the newest issue on it.
The format of the messages is: 36 characters on 15 lines.
Note: messages or birthdates that are NOT complete will not be published. For more information try to contact us. Good luck....

To find e.g. all messages which are sent by members of Mirage: Click on FROM GROUP. A new menu will appear with a list of group- names in alphabetical order, so you can now easily select Mirage to show all the available messages.

Welcome to a new feature of CHITCHAT As you know we are collecting birthdates since Chit-Chat issue #3. We have got now almost 300 dates.
It's getting harder to find a date in such a list, so we decided to make search-options for them.
As you can see beside you can search in several different modes. When you select one of them you will get more detailled information about it.

BIRTHDATE STRING SEARCHING
The STRING-SEARCH-MODE: search for a specified string in all the birthdates. You can use this option to find a birthdate of one single person, by entering his code-name in the bar above this textscreen.
Some ways to use this search-mode:
- When you enter MIRAGE, all dates of all members from MIRAGE will be displayed.
- SWAPPER, will display all dates of persons with that function.
- RETEP, will display the birthdate of this person.
YEAR SEARCHING
You now entered the year-search-mode of the birthdates. There's not much to say about this option, just select the year of the birthdates you want to search for in the list next to this column.

PROLOGUE
From the Horny highlands of Denmark we bring you the Mega Mighty Chit Chat issue #12. Released on ' Da party III ' on the 27th of december in the year of 1993
First of all I would like to wish y'all a very Digital, Happy, New Year.
For Chit Chit 1993 was a good year, reason for the succes was the great support from several people, the enthousiasm & all the comments (negative aswell as positive).
So therefore I hereby pleed for sustaining the support, especially clip-arts.
This issue consists again of 2 disks, containing all the extra's: clip-arts, big pictures, gallery,
etc.
Some people might have wondered what happened to issue #11 (which was kinda low-budget).
The reason for this was that we had so many messages that we had to release an issue pronto, but we didn't have all the gfx & pictures for a 'FAT' issue, the amount of messages was so huge that we couldn't include them in this issue, so issue #11 was like an ' Emergency ' issue.
Our excuses to those of you who were a bit dissapointed, we think that this issue will compensate the pain !
I can't say how pleased we are that almost everybody is using our Message-Editor, It
saves us tons of work and debugging, by the way a News/article-editor is on its way !

And now a little interview that I (RADAVI) had with Danny.
DANNY is a graphics artist who has released his slideshow: 'FORGOTTEN' in the beginning of september '92. This was a co-production with JACK/MIRAGE and FABIAN/DESIRE.

Okay DANNY, what about some information about yourself (age, school, etc.) ?
Ok, my age eeeh, I'm just 19 years old so that means I'm still schooling ! This year (and the next 2 as well) I'm studying on a school mainly based on art & printing techniques. I also have some other hobby's besides drawing. My biggest hobby is GIRLS !!! I guess my pictures
show that. At least I hope they do !
What was your 1st computer and since when do you have an AMIGA ?
The very (very) first computer I got my hands on, was the good ol' C64. I bought it in 1986 if I remember correctly. After 1 year of playing games and trying to be a musician, I started drawing. After another 2 years I didn't draw anything more than little spaceships and other things. The year 1989 was my first Amiga 500 year. I started drawing on small games from friends of mine. After I stopped doing that, I really got the chance to develop my own style. I started drawing bigger and more difficult things. My first full-screen picture (Hostile
Wings) followed. I kept drawing and drawing, released a slideshow aaaannd here we are!!
Why are you in Lemon ?
Well, I teamed up with LEMON. because there are some very good friends of mine in there aswell. I allready knew FACET, KR'33 and NAO personally so that was a big advantage. And another thing is that I want my graphics to be used. What better way is there to do this then with a great team as LEMON.? My opinion, it's a hard working team with a lot of talented guys. And there's also a lot of fun. Great!!
How do you start your pictures and where do you get your ideas ?
That depends, allmost all of my logo's come straight out of my imagination. Some pictures as well. Then I just start and draw whatever comes into mind or what is needed. Most of my pictures are drawn with a reference model. This can come in the form of original paintings, photo's out of fashion mag's, self-drawn paper artwork, things seen on the TV and some other things. In this case I take a completely different approach. First I start sketching (as far as that goes with a mouse) ALL the important lines as perfect as possible. So not just the outlines. A lot of attention is paid to this stage. Once everything is perfectly drawn
in lines, there is no worry about object sizes and proportions while drawing the actual picture in full quality. After the lines, I start making my colours which I find one of the most important and difficult things to do. The palette I make is adjusted quite a number of times when working on the picture. Removing the less needed colours and adding more needed ones. When I actually start drawing, I look for the best place to start the picture. Places with lots of contrast and not too much detail are best. From out of that spot I draw the entire picture. Not too much drawing in diffirent places and than working towards eachother. This puzzle-effect can result in unnecesarry color differences. Throughout this process changes are made wherever I think
they are needed. Draw, draw, draw and voila!
What do you think about people who use digitizers ?
Shit man ! I believe that any good artist does not use a digitizer, cos I know it is possible to create cool gfx by hand by my own experience. But if I ever get to know an (Amiga)artist using digi equipment and saying he draws it all, then I'd recommend the whole scene to completely slag this person off. It's just unbelievable lame !!!
Ofcourse everybody knows that you released a slideshow: 'FORGOTTEN' (which was the best I've ever seen). How long did you draw for it, and what was the most difficult thing to do ?
(Thank you for the compliment !) Very long! There's some pictures in it that I drew quite some time ago. And as for the most difficult thing...phew.. that's a hard one... I think it would be the time when I had to look for the right coder and the right musician. And I think I made a brilliant choice with CRACKERJACK and FABIAN. Great work guys !!!
Did you get reactions from people on the slideshow ?
Oh yes, I got a lot of reactions from all kinds of people. I got letters of people telling me how much they liked the slideshow. But of course not every one likes it all, and I can get in to that. One of the things an artist likes to hear best, is that other people like his work. In this case I would like to thank all the people who said so. Thank you VERY much guys !!! The slide also appeared in CU Amiga and Amiga Format getting very good review-marks. Makes me feel good you know!!
What are your future plans ?
Hmm... Well, in the beginning of 1994 I want to start working a whole different sort of art-form. Yes on Amiga... oh no, partly done on Amiga. It's going to be AGA and it's going to kick the crap out of everything ever done on Amiga. That means IF I can pull it off. Don't expect to see it soon, it might take a while, or two, or three, or... Furthermore I want to do one kick-ass demo before starting on my biiig project. Yep!
What is your favourite music, movie, graphician, musician, coder, (disk)mag and console ?
MUSIC: I like almost all music except for the real extreme types of music like funk and jazz.
MOVIE: Science Fiction, Barbarian types of movies and stuff like Naked Gun etc. Great fun indeed!!
GRAPHICIAN: There are a lot of graphicians I think are good. These are: FAIRFAX, FACET, PEACHY, HOF, COUGAR, TITAN and so many others...
MUSICIAN: I think NHP/JAIL DEZIGN/SCOOPEX is the best. Why ? Well his music is different than others. It's very good. Furthermore I like JESTER, LIZARDKING, TIP and MTX, AXEL,
FABIAN, STATIC and the list goes on and on...
CODER: CHAOS, DAN, CRACKERJACK, LAXITY, HANNIBAL...
MAG: Mean Machines and CVG.

I know you have (a lot of) consoles, what do you like about them (isn't Amiga better than the real thing...) ?
The Amiga has it's strong points in being able to create something on it. So did many Amiga users and forth came the Amiga scene. But for arcade quality games I really want something good. But I also need to draw and be able to
show my work to a great majority of people. So I came up with the fultime idea; own an Amiga and some consoles. WOW what an idea!
Could you give your opinion, reaction on: Crackerjack, Facet, Hof, interviews, the Official Eurochart, the scene, Wayne's World and Elvis Presley (?)
CRACKERJACK: He's a great coder and a very good friend of mine. He also likes consoles.
FACET: A damn good friend and artist. He's got many good ideas.
HOF: He has an ego-problem !!

I've got so many good ideas lined up in my mind waiting to be drawn. The only problem is the lack of time to draw. At the moment I'm designing a lot of pictures on paper. Not many people know this but I'm originally an artist that draws on paper. The things I'm now working on are 100% designed by me and will be released in the scene soon. So no more copying from artists like Boris Vallejo. Keep your eyes on the screen...
How do you feel about the fact that CU-AMIGA reviewed your slideshow and gave it 92% ?
I was reading several computer magazines in
our local bookstore when I got to this CU-review. I really could not believe it. I was so happy that I wanted to show the review to the girl behind the counter. I had a really big smile on my face when walking home. BRILLIANT!!

COPYING PICTURES
A true story behind the copying of pictures.

At the moment there's a lot of talking in the scene about artists copying pictures from original painters.
Morei and more artists seem to get involved in this way of producing pictures. Many scene-guys don't seem to know what to think of this, some even start to portray these artists as fakers.
Lately there is an attitude going round in the scene which thinks very low of copied pictures. I'm starting to get quite pissed off with this kind of prejudice. I think some artists (who are copying pictures) intensions are misunderstood.
That's one of the two reasons why I took it upon me to write this article.
I also copy pictures from artists like Boris Vallejo, Ken Kelly and Mark Harrison. Not many people seem to know this, but I originally started drawing on paper. Doing my pictures completely from my own imagination. As I'm working in both ways, I would like to give my opinion about this matter. I hope to clear up the confusion that this subject is leaving behind. And that's the other...
Many people seem to compare copying pictures to a form of digitizing. Some even say things like:' Copying pictures is easy, anyone can do it as long as you have the patience for it'. I agree that with copying, a hard part in the
drawing of a picture is already done for you. The design that is. But still you have to redraw the picture on the screen with just a mouse in your hand. I can tell you that it takes a lot more than just patience.
To keep as much of the detail in can be a real bitch. All proportions need to be correct, the alias must be perfectly smoothed away, small colorfades over a big distance need to be dithered in order to get a smooth colorfade etc. etc. Still sounds easy? Try and you'll find out.
Now I can hear you scream: 'What about the people that digitize/scan the original pics and then retouch?' All I have to say about that is that those digipeople should not be taken seriously. These jerks are the fakers and
should be kicked real hard!! But don't let that kind of shit waste this article.
Copying pictures is in some people's eyes just an easy way to get famous. I see it very differently. For me (and I think also for some other graphicians) copying pictures is a wonderfull teacher. How to draw proportions, compositions, the way light & shadows cohere, using the right contrast for back -and foreground, anatomy etc. etc. gets clearer and clearer after studying and copying other artists. This finally results in a certain experience, style and art-wisdom. Probably the most copied work comes from the fantasy-painter Boris Vallejo.
I'll give some examples of scene pictures which
were copied from Boris's paintings:
-IRIDON's Party 91 picture 'Maximum overscan.'
-HOF's TRSI easter Party '91 picture 'Sunken.'
-SUNY's Assembly 93 picture 'Aztec.'
-PEACHY's Party 92 picture 'Womsnake.'
-FACET's Party 92 picture.
-DANNY's picture 'Pegasus & Perseus'
(Forgotten-slide).
-MACK's picture 'Medusa' (PRISM-slide).
-FADE ONE's picture for Chit-Chat #11.
And the list goes on...
I think it's save to say that Boris is one of the best in 'real life'-painters. So let's try and find out what a man of his status would think of a subject like this. In his recent book
FANTASY ART TECHNIQUES, he wrote the following: (I quote him on this!!):
''More or less 'self-taught' artists will often discount the value of formal study. On the one hand I agree that the experience of painting itself is the most effective teacher. It is possible to learn by struggling along on your own, making your own mistakes, and doing your paintings away in the wilderness like a hermit. On the other hand, nothing can replace the constant exposure to the work of others - both those who are better (giving you a goal upon which to set your sights) and those who are not as good (giving you a sense of where you are in the hierarchy, how far along you are, and how much further you can still go).''
As Boris is my favorite painter, I took his advice. Probably many other scene artists have similar reasons. Let's have another quotation from the book:
''I did go to art school. I did become well acquinted with established methods and rules. I did study and copy the paintings of the Old Masters. Based on this initial groundwork, what proved enormously instructive to me was seeing the origninal paintings of other illustrators. It is tremendously helpful to see the brushstrokes, the way colour is applied - something that no print of the same piece will show.''
Well, I think this says about enough. Very much people think that Boris's paintings are the best. So why shouldn't we learn it the way how he learned to draw be the best? It leads to the best results. I want to paint pictures with that same result. So do a lot of other artists. There is ofcourse another thing some people tend to forget quite easily. The fact that approx. 99% of painters in real life don't draw straight out of there imagination. Sure, the idea for a picture comes from the mind, but for the actual drawing of the objects itself (humans, animals, nature etc.) they all use a model in one way or the other. Most of these painters use photographs, which are sometimes especially made (like Boris does) for the picture. Others use real-life models or
footage recorded on video-tapes to name just a few. The problem for some scene artists probably lies here as it does for me. I don't have the kind of money or time to buy expensive photo-cameras and shoot my own reference-material. So most of the time, I'm sort of forced to use paintings as reference.
Opponents of these methods often scream out that they never copied a picture or they never copy techniques. I read an article recently from an unknown artist where he wrote things like this. He said that artists that copy pictures do not deserve to be entitled as artists. He and many other of his equal are probably so proud of themselves that they forget a couple of things.
There is this guy called ESWAT. He bragged that you should do your own stuff and don't do lame copying (or however he put it). This guy is a so called Grafitti-artist and only does that kind of art. I must say that he's really good at it. But this comment on copying pictures was not ment to be said by him. As far as I know, he's never done a good realistic picture. Only grafitti! Now I would like to see him draw a perfect picture of for example a beautifull woman without any reference whatsoever!!!. You know, like let's say... the 'Welcome to R.A.W. 5' pic by Fairfax/Andromeda. I can savely say that he won't even come close. The fact that he forgets is that grafitti is not a style which can be called Realism. It's all just imaginable
stuff. The letters, the filling, those little 'cartoonish' humans. When drawing for instance a human face in this style, there are no strict rules of nature. You can draw it as strange as you wish and it will still look cool. When drawing a face in perfect realism, you've got to follow those rules of nature. Everything has got to be drawn exactly the way it is. If you make a mistake it will immediatly look bad. That's because we see faces every day. Grafitti has no reference in nature. Allmost anything goes. Fantasy art makes use of a rendering-style which is identical to things in real life (with exception of dragons and monsters etc.). So what I'm saying is that you can't compare grafitti to Realism (Fantasy art).
By the way, how can these artists judge like that about copying if they never tried it out like they say. If you don't know the advantages and disadvantages of both ways then don't bother to give trustworthy opinion! You will only make yourself look less skilled. I know many artists that copy pictures but still design the most beautifull logo's you've ever seen. For example: Peachy's Fire and Ice/TRSI, Facet's LI2/ANARCHY, Cougar's Intererence/SANITY logo and the list goes on and on. Now you can't tell me that after seeing quality work like this you do not want to call these guys artists. I think that when someone is able to perfectly copy an original you can safely say that he's got the talent to do his own designs.
If you want to learn how to draw in a good way, then use your talent by studying and copying from quality painters. It's not only a better and a more usefull way to learn, but it's also faster and more effective. There's only one very important aspect to it all!!! Don't stick to copying pictures for too long! This is a very important thing which some artists seem to forget. They see copying as a routine job. Some artists don't even have there sights set on learning from copying. If your drawing with these intensions you'd better stop because there is afterall an end to the seemingly endless gallery of original paintings which are lend to be copied.
I hope that with this article people will start looking at copied pictures with a little more
respect and understanding.

THE BEAVIS & BUTTHEAD EXPERIENCE
The Beavis & Butthead experience
Every saturday night Retep and I go to 'De Lantaern' by train. It is a nice Disco in Schagen (25 km from our hometown), a lot of folks from Den Helder (our hometown) go there because of the nice girls, music, and that certain atmosphere.
It takes about 20 minutes to get there, the ride back can take up to 90 minutes (because of all the emergency stops, fights and delays).
The ride home is the funniest though. Every week somebody else takes care of the entertainment which is provided in several forms: train fights, vandalism, Drunken people, etc. This time we decided to provide some
other kind of entertainment which could be enjoyed by anyone, but wouldn't hurt nobody.
We decided to (ab)use the Intercom system of this train.
The next weekend we bought a childrens walkman named: 'Hallo Music' it cost us 15 guilders (13 Dm, 8$, 45 fr., 45 kr.), then we took 2 old batteries, 1 broken headset, and one 180 min. Beavis & Butthead video-tape, we made a 15 minute compilation of it and put it on audio-tape and we were ready to go.
That saturday we went to Schagen and had a great time (as usual), and got back to the railway station and waited for the train to take us home. The train finally came, Retep and
I got on board as one of the first in order to take some preparations. We used a special key (borrowed) to open the the box which contained the intercom-Telephone. We quickly taped the headphone onto the mic and taped the Speak-Switch (in order to turn the system ON) then hid the Walkman and telephone in the box, turned the walkman on and closed the door.
Hu..huh.huh..ehm..eh.huh...ehm sounded through the entire train (Whooow that's coool !!!) everybody laughed and enjoyed the show exept for the conducters, they had to stop the train and they had to find the sound source (Hi tss !) before they could continue the journey.
The funny thing was that they couldn't find it! They even searched outside the train! After about 20 minutes they found the Walkman and disconnected it. In those 20 minutes we listened to the whole Beavis & Butthead compilation and 'Insane in the brain' from Cypress Lame.
When we arrived in Den Helder some people even thanked us for the wonderful night. We did lose the walkman, but who cares about 6 beers (same price as walkman) when you have the time of your life together with about 300 people (minus 6 conductors).

REMINISCING
You know, I sometimes sit back and reminisce (means something like: holding back the year's, or memories) over the good old year's when I just got my Amiga wayback in '87. That were the days that I was statisfied with my A-500, 1024 Kb, and my TV modulator. Listening all day to the Sonix tunes and enjoying the Intro's and Demo's. Wondering how they did that, defending myself as an Amiga user against all those lame ST users (or ST loosers ?) In those you copied everything you could get, using White Lighting (Didn't have df1:) tried to repair disks, programs that didn't work, switching the memory On and Off. The Amiga users were like a small elite club, cause not everybody could afford an Amiga. When you said that you owned an Amiga people kinda looked up to you.
Building (or at least trying to) your own sound digitizer, adding buttons and switches to your Amiga, putting the music on tape for your friends or for use in the walkman. Yeah, those certainly were THE days !!!!!
Nowadays the whole atmosphere seems to have dissapeared. I hardly use my Amiga, Only copy a disk for very special occasions, Demo's are all the same, If a program doesn't work I don't even bother looking for the reason, I simply skip that disk, almost everybody owns (or owned) an Amiga, lotsa lamers enetered the amiga world, people change groups like underpants, the system which used to be advanced, nowadays seems a bit retarded compared to several computers or consoles, The software always comes with bugs or
errors and when it works it usually sucks!
At moments like these I just sit back and wonder: will those days ever return ???

The name of the game (that rhymes) is:

The game is ( like the name says ) a variant on Tetris, but features 'realtime' comments by Beavis & Butthead, Sample edit options, size
exapandable (like a CLI window), in game statistics, and lots more.
To make a long story short: It's the best, fastest, and funniest Tetris clone yet !
The game is released in November but can also be obtained at THE PARTY 3 from the several MIRAGE members.
