here we are back again. and we are motivated as ever.
in the last time i get more and more swap-sendings.
and so here i have to clear something.
i'm no swapper. the only way i swap is via email.
so if you want to send something to the x-files and don't
have an internet-account, please send the stuff to Ghandy,
our only official swapper by now. he will pass it over to
me.
so remember: snail-mail -=> Ghandy

i hope that we can finish the new design and present you
the next issue in a totally new look. we will do the best
we can. be surprised. =)
as always: if you have some new ideas for the new x-files,
contact me and tell me your wishes.
ok, the great "competition" comes nearer and nearer.
with "competition" i mean the party-explosion on
easter-weekend. Symposium/Mekka, Siliconvention and The
Gathering will "compete" for the best releases, the best
guests and the best partytime.
The Gathering will probably profit from the less releases
on The Party 6. So it's nearly sure that this party will be
nice.
So here we come to the "local competition". Symposium/Mekka
and Siliconvention will take place only with a very short
distance between the locations. if this was the right
decision, we will see on easter. but for me it was the
wrong decision. the amiga-scene is small enough, so we
need no forced competition were the is normally no.
so i hope the amiga-scene will come to ONE of these
parties.
and as a little hint:
we will be on the SYMPOSIUM / MEKKA ! =)

THE THiRD ACT
We would like to invite everyone to the SCEneST#3 party,
which will be held in the usual place at the usual time
in 1997 too.
This year we would like to break that magic number
- 1000 people - which has only been reached at 3 parties.
In 1995 600, in 1996 900 people attended SCEneST, besides
this, considering that we are expecting a fair number of
foreign attenders, this magic number doesnt seem
unbreakable. But of course the number of attenders is
just one the many things. We would like you to feel good
during all three days of the party, and we hope that you
will lift the quality of the party with your great
productions.

PC demo compo:
- Maximum size: 8 MB,
- 100% VGA compatibility + VESA SVGA,
- Maximum resolution: 640 x 480,

PC intro compo:
- Maximum size: 64 KByte,
- 100% VGA compatibility + VESA SVGA,

- The intro can NOT use the Gravis Ultrasound
patches from the HDD,

Amiga demo compo:
- Maximum size: 8 MB,
- A demo is quitable at any time.
Amiga intro compo:
- Maximum size: 64 KByte,
- A demo is quitable at any time.
4K intro compo:
- Maximum size: 4096 bytes,
- Time shown: 5 minutes, but the intro can be
longer,
- Amiga and PC will compete in one category,
- for PC 100% VGA compatibility + VESA SVGA,
- Maximum resolution: 640 x 480,
- ESC key to exit from the intro at any time.
- One coder can compete with only one 4k intro,
- Music is allowed.
C64 demo compo:
- Maximum size: 2 disks,
- Time shown: 10 minutes, but the demo can be
longer.
Graphics compo:
- Maximum resolution: 640x512 in true color
mode,
- Only 100% drawn pictures can compete (no
scans),
- Phases shouldnt be attached, but if the
phases are missing, and the jury doesnt
believe the authenticity of the picture, then
the picture will be disqualified
- Allowed formats: GIF, IFF/LBM, PCX,
- One graphician can compete with only one
picture,
- The picture can be signed be the artist,
- The supplied image's resolution can be larger
than the maximum allowed (ie.800x600x16M),
but in this case the conversion is done by
the organizers,
- Only the original picture will be spread,
- In case the projector can't handle true color
modes, the pictures will be converted to
8 bit mode with Image Alchemy. If this
doesn't suit you, then have an 8 bit version
of the picture on the disk too.
Trace compo:
- Maximum resolution 640x512 in true color
mode,
- Allowed formats: GIF, IFF/LBM, PCX, JPG,
- One tracer can compete with only one image,
- The image can be signed by the maker,
- The supplied image's resolution can be larger
than the maximum allowed (ie.800x600x16M),
but in this case the conversion is done by
the organizers,
- Only the original picture will be spread,

- Played on: Gravis Ultrsound MAX 1MB, CapaMod,
- One musician can compete with only one music
(In this compo!)
Multi channel music compo:
- Maximum size: 1 MB,
- Time played: 3 minutes, but the music can be
longer,
- Allowed formats: all that Cubic Player 1.7
knows
- Played on: Gravis Ultrsound MAX 1MB,
Cubic Player 1.7 or if this is not
suitable, then you have to supply
the player along with your music,
- One musician can compete with only one music
(In this compo!)
Beethoven compo: (original SCEneST competition)
- The competitors have to compose music with
predefined intruments - after listening to
them - in 33 minutes.
- Hardware: PC + Gravis Ultrasound 1MB,
- Available trackers: ST, FT, IT,
- Time played: 3 minutes.
C64 music compo:
- Time played: 3 minutes,
- One musician can compete with only one music.
Lamer demo compo: (original SCEneST competition)
- PC/amiga/C64 run under one category,
- Disgusting and untasteful entries will be
disqualified,
- Recommended size: maximum 20 MB,
- Time shown: 10 minutes.
Wild compo:
- Any kind of material can run on any kind of
machine, but we would like VHS casettes the
most,
- If you do not supply a VHS casette then it
will be run from your own machine [MPEG
suggested],
- Time played: 15 minutes, but the stuff can be
longer.
Fun compo:
- Global stupidity. For 5 groups..
Quake compo:
- Players will compete on 4 machines for the
top prize.
RPG competition:
- The usual AD&D - everything else is a
surprise,
- Teams of 5 can compete.
COMPOMACHiNES
PC: Pentium 133MHz, 16MB RAM, PCI S3 Trio 64V+,
2xGUS MAX 1MB, MS-DOS 6.22, HIMEM.SYS,
600K free base mem.
The settings for the 2 GUSes (SURROUND):
220,1,1,11,7
240,3,3,5,3
The card on 220h will be in front, so if you don't
use surround, then make sure your entry can use
this port.
Naturally the left side of 240h will be the back
left side and the right side of 240h will be the
back right side. We hope that a lot of you will
use the SURROUND capabilities handed to you, and
that you will give the audience something to
remember.
AMIGA: Amiga 1200, 68060, 10MB RAM. [1230/50 optional.]
C64: Commodore 64, Floppy drive, you can choose between
old, or new SID, Action Replay MK VII.

PRIZES
We will try to award prizes with a value totalling
500000.- in cash, hardware and software. We will take
the quality, and the quantity of all the productions
into account when presenting the prizes to the first
placed productions in all the categories. This
excludes the main compo (the PC demo compo), in which
we hope that there will be the same number and quality
of demos as there were last year. Because of this the
prizes are SURE TO BE the following:
#1 50.000 forint
#2 30.000 forint
#3 20.000 forint
We hope that these prizes which count as a record
amongst hungarian parties will inspire the democreaters
to make some new productions. We would like to award
cash as other compo prizes too, but this will only
depend on the number of entry tickets sold.
DEADLiNE
The compos will consisto of two parts, because the
number of productions demands this. Between the two
parts there will a pause of a couple of hours so that
everyone can rest for a while. The following compos will
be held in the first part (late saturday afternoon):
- C64 music
- C64 gfx
- 4 channel music
- Gfx
- Multichannel music
- Trace
- Beethoven
- Lamer demo
The deadline for the compos is: saturday noon (12:00).
Then in the second part (shown saturday night):

Deadline: saturday evening at 6 o'clock (18:00).

You can vote for the best 3 productions (which are
worth 5 - 3 - 1 points) in all of the categories.
COMPO ENTRY FEE
The compo fee for all of the compos are the disks that
you supply your productions on.
CD
The productions from SCEneST "dominator" will be
available on the CD of the next issue of Chip magazine,
and the next CD Ultra too.
THE MOViE
We will make a 2 hour film of the party again, which we
will copy to you for free if you send us a video
casette.

We are counting on your work.
iNFOS
Since we can not supply enough power extenders, we would
like everyone to bring an extender that will have at
least one free space for the people sitting next to them
to connect their extender to. This way the whole school
can be powered up very simply. Please dont kick these
rules because if you do, then you are going to cause
this chain to break and you will be punched in the nose
rightfully by the people sitting next to you.
We can only fulfill your table reservations if you
arrive until the afternoon of the opening day.
Otherwise, counting on the large number of attenders
(and the lack of space) this will not be solvable. If
you can not come on the first day, and you would like to
bring a machine, then we advise you to ask someone who
comes on friday, to reserve more places for you.
Turn OFF all of your sound sources during all of the
compos (except Beethoven, Quake and RPG). We would like
to ask you that if the compos don't interest you
(although that's what the party is for) to watch the
time they are on, so that we wont have to warn you about
disturbing the compos.
Do not leave your sleeping bag at home because you will
be able to sleep on it in 1 or 2 halls designated for
this.
The consumption of alcohol is forbidden during the
party. Drunk people will be carried out by the security
guards - or if that doesnt work, by the police.
Smokeing is also forbidden inside the whole school. We
ask everyone to go out in front of the school to smoke.
Everyone please take care of your belongings, because

The Organizers of the FRIED BITS I-III,SILICONVENTION'94,
BB SYMPOSIUM'96, YELLING JAM PARTY and INTERCON'96 Party
bring you the biggest computerparty at Easter 1997.
The Siliconvention follows the very successful Fried Bits
partys that were held during the last years on the same
time and location.
All Systems are welcome! That means we have lots of
Competitions for the following computers: ACORN, AMIGA,
ATARI, C64, PC.
The SILIconvention should be seen as an alternative to the
usual style of taking parties.
In our opinion just renting a hall and putting a
video-beamer and some music-boxes into it isn't enough,
there should be something more about it.
Therefore we decided to organize a party which offers what
we missed at other parties so far :
Seperated competition-hall and sleeping rooms.
Showers, live acts, food and drinks at reasonable prices.
The seperation of rooms has the advantage that you may :
Sleep when you want to, watch any competition you like,
go shopping, or stay at the party-area and enjoy the great
spirit of the demo-scene.
We think that having fun is much more important than
stupid warfares between groups, systems, parties,
people ...
We don't like the arrogant attitude some groups and
organizers of other parties exhibit towards other people,
groups, systems, ...
So our party will differ in that !
There are some rumours about the SILIconvention being a
"commercial" party, this is not the case. Of course we
have sponsors (all other partys we know of have sponsors)
because without them it wouldn't be possible to keep the
entrance-fee as small as possible and have nice
competition-prizes as well.
But there will be NO sales on the SILIconvention !
It is not a sales exhibition but a demo-party where people
from all systems may have fun together.
All of our sponsors are only providing equipment for the
party, or prizes for the competitions. So we have
excellent prizes,as you can see in the list below.
Our prizes will fit the competitions, so there won't be
any PC-group winning an Amiga turbo-card and no Amiga-crew
will win software for the PC. We have either prizes that
fit the system, or things everyone can use (for example
video-game-consoles).
Some people wonder why they haven't heard of the
main-organizers, the reason for this may be that we are
from the Acorn and Atari Falcon scene , if you are
involved in one of these scenes you know us , otherwise
you probably don't.
But we are not unexperienced in organizing parties (the
list at the top is not exaggerated) since we organized
many parties and took part in much more, so we know what
we are doing.
And we have well known organizers from all systems, so you
can be sure no system will be neglected.
As you can see, we are keeping the promises other parties
make (and made) !

Nearly one year ago two great parties took place:
-> Mekka'96 (29th to 31st of march):
Mekka was held the first time in 1996 and was a great
success. Over 300 attenders from different countries
joined the event. Before Mekka, there was no real
party for the german pc demo scene in our country.
-> Symposium'96 (5th to 8th of april):
Symposium took place the 9th time and about 650
attenders from all over Europe came to be part of
this special event. The multi-platform party got
a good reputation cause it is a scene party organized
by scene people.
At eastern 1997 these both parties will be combined -
not competing like last year - to provide you even more
fun, entertainment and partyfeeling.
It does not matter what kind of computers you like - we
will support all platform and most of them will be
represented by well known and famous demo groups for
sure.

-> Everyone talks about *Internet* and so do we. We will
have a Internet cafe installed for you with lots of
terminals for IRC (17) and Web (5) access.
-> Visit our IRC channel #sym97 to get the latest news
and information.
-> An ethernet network running with a big fileserver
and party chat connected to the IRC. Our equipment
will hopefully provide a fast and save party network
all 72 hours. See chapter 5 for more details.
-> Network: we are selling network equipment like NE2000
network cards or ethernet cables and connectors for a
fair price.
-> We will present all compos on a big screen of 6 * 4
squaremeters and a powerfull Dolby Surround music
system.
-> 100% public voting on all compos for everybody at the
partyplace.
-> There will be a quiet place for you to sleep if you
decide not to do this in front of your computer or
under the table ;)
-> Food: We will sell drinks (Coke,Water) and cold
snacks like (Snickers, Chips, etc.) for a cheap
price. We can not provide warm food (sorry) and the
shops in the city have only opened on Saturday from
09:00am to 04:00pm (that's only 7 hours during the
hole party!) but you will find McDonald's and some
nice restaurants in the city. Of course you can bring
your own food with you.
-> Every night there will be a mind blasting laser show.
-> Live performances on the stage by Noisedrift,
Ronny/Teklords and the FX Performer and
Noodles/Phantasm.
-> Flake/TRSI, the author of the well known Amiga
anti-virus program VirusWorkshop will hold a small
conference giving details on the latest virus
techniques which are becoming more evil and
destructive than ever before.
-> The German BeBox Users Group (DeBUG) will also meet
with us. We try to make room for a presentation in
the Be Demo Tour series which took place also on The
Party VI last X-Mas.
-> Many other features of which we are not able or not
willing to tell you yet.
Now that we're organizing this party, you might think
that all you can do is visiting it. This is wrong: We
give you the one and only chance to produce yourself.
If you want to give a lecture on something or if you
have another idea of enriching the event, you're very

Only 15 entries will be presented. The preselection
will be done by a jury of known scene people.
-> The entry must be released at the party - not at
any time before and not on other parties taking
place at the same time (we will exchange us with
the organizers of all other parties).
-> You must release a "final"-version of your
productions at the party.
-> You have to license us to put your production on
any digital media.
-> The entry must be one archive with description
(FILE_ID.DIZ). The name of the archive MUST be
compatible with ISO 9660: only the characters
"A"-"Z","0"-"9" and the underscore "_" are allowed!

A LAN (Local Area Network) with several servers will be
on the Party. The Party Server will be used to publish
all entries after the competitions.
Every table gets an own network cable with a terminator
(BNC 10-BASE-2 Thin-Ethernet). We will support the
following frames:
-> Ethernet IEEE 802.2 with iPX
-> Ethernet IEEE 802.3 with iPX
-> Ethernet Type II with iPX & TCP/iP
Please note, that we DO NOT SUPPORT NeuBEUI, DLC or
DEC-NET!
That's what you need to connect yourself to the party
network and its party server:
-> An ethernet cable and a T-Connector (we do NOT
support Twisted Pair, unless you bring your own
hub with you ;)
-> A Novell NDS (Netware Directory Services) client OR
you can get an instant client from the net-crew.
-> For the instant client you will need the ODI Driver
for your Network adapter. This client does NOT run
with Windows 95 even if Windows 95 includes it's own
ODI Driver.
We are selling network equipment like NE2000 network
cards, ethernet cables and connectors for a fair price.
If you want to spread your releases over the network
you can share the files with Windows 95/NT/WfW or get a
permission by the net-crew to put them on the
Party-Server.

The KANDU organization gives you one of the greatest
events of the so far ever organized...
- Here's the deal :
- More than 100 hours of pure party !
- Many compos
- Non-stop scene-show
- The worlds largest temp network
- 100+ crew members at your service
- A *HUGE* video room
- Lots of coke will be available
- World class big-screen !
- Place and Time :
- The Hamar olympic hall (or the Vikingship) was built
for the 1994 winter olympics, with 12000 square
meters floor space. Since all these sports activities
are over, we can use it for something a bit more
meaningful.
- At TG96 we had over 2500 attendants, and we had
absolute no problem to get a seat to every person
there !
- To get there :
- If you drive from Oslo, you will see the Vikingship
right before you enter "Hamar". From here, just
follow the signs.
- If you go by train, step out at the Vikingship
station. If you cannot see the party-place from
there... please call!
- If you come by submarine, please check that the sub
is not submerged when you leave the boat. (and do
congratulate the captain from me, -> the Vikingship
is close to a lake, not an ocean!)
- Time
- This year will we open at 10:00 at wednesday 26th
March, and close the hall at 16:00 sunday the 30th
March. If you should arrive earlier, please contact
us in advance for arrangements.
- Entrance
Note : at TG96 we let in aliens go for free, but this
year have taken the decision that aliens will have to
pay double. "ID4" really shook us up..
Girls are still let in for free, as are non-europeans
who show a valid passport all other carbon based
lifeforms will have to pay the fee of 300,- NOK or
appx. US $50,-
Pre-registration can be ordered via "billett-service"
at your local Norwegian post-office. Foreigns please
contact us for special arrangements.
Our clever scheme to sell warm winter clothes at double
prices failed last year, so this year we will let you
all into a warm waiting area. Also, we have designed a
brand new registration system which will crash in an
even more spectacular way than the TG96 system :)
- Party - Network
At TG96 we set a new world standard for party
networking. At TG97 we will provide at least 1500
connections, 70 segments at 10MBits and a 155MBit ATM
backbone.
High quality network adapters will be sold at bargain
prices, but details are still unclear on this one.
Our experienced network crew have been scrambled once
again and will work around the clock to get you
connected...
We will take this opportunity to thank everyone who
attended TG96 and gave us the necessary inspiration to
do it again once more. (more and more..)
