The Gathering '98 report
8-12 april 1998

This was my first TG
ever, so I had
various expectations
when I got there.
Firstly, I had heard
a lot about the
commercialism that
was a so typical for
this party, and this
was true. There were
lots of banners and
stands for companies
like IBM and Western
Digital, and Mr. Lee
(the Norwegian King
of Nudles). I had
also heard that there
were a lot of gamers
at this party, and I
learned that this was
true too. - Mainly
Quakers, and there
was a Quake-compo
too. I had some bad
thoughts about this,
because I don't think
think a game has very
much to do with the
scene.
It wasn't a lot of
Amiga people there,
but later I heard
from someone that
this was because the
the most of the
tickets were sold in
no time.
There were in fact a
few macs here too,
and a few C64's, but
no Ataris. This came
as a surprise to me,
because the Mac
isn't excactly a
scene-machine, but
the Atari has always
been, even though it
is quite dead now.
But now lets discuss
the really good
parts. Firstly, the
party was huge, and
in more than one
way; between 3500
and 4000 people
attended, so it was
the biggest TG ever,
and maybe one of the
biggest parties ever
when counting people
attending (that is
not 4000 sceners of
course, so it may
not be so big if you
only count the
sceners). The second
reason why it was so
big was that it
lasted for five
days, so it's one of
the bigger parties
in length of time
too.
Me and Punisher/Apt
tried to sleep out-
side to get away
from all the noise,
but we soon
found out why no-one
else did: Because it
was freezing cold!
After trying to
sleep on the hard
ground for a while
we had to give up
this project and go
to sleep inside the
hall. The morning
after we spoke to
Frequent/Ephidrena,
who slept in his
car. He told us that
when he woke up, the
temperature was -2
degrees celsius
INSIDE his car!!
