I WENT TO THE EXPO WITH A FRIEND OF MINE CALLED CRUSADER OF REETEC.WE ARRIVED
THERE AT 11 O'CLOCK. WE SPLITTED WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE WALL WHICH WAS STYLED
BY DIFFERENT GROUPS. I RECOGNIZED NAMES LIKE RSI, TRISTAR, ELECTRON, TREACL,
PSD, UNITED FORCES, CULT, TARGETS, VENOM, TSB,SILENTS, CYTAX AND SOME MORE I
CAN'T REMEMBER. COMMODORE PRESENTED THEIR A 3000, A VERY NICE MACHINE BUT NOT
VERY CHEAP! AT 1 O'CLOCK I MET WITH SF OF UNITED FORCES. HE TOLD ME THAT HIS
GROUP SPLITTED INTO TWO HALVES - BOTH CALLED UFO! WE WENT AROUND AND SAW SOME
AMAZING LOW EXIBITION-PRICES. E.G. A 1.8MB RAM EXPANSION FOR 279 DM !!!!!!
LATER ON RUMORS ABOUT A PARTY WENT AROUND, BUT I LEFT TO EARLY TO HEAR MORE
ABOUT IT.
A LITTLE NOTE ABOUT THE "POOR" SOFTWARE COMPANIES: WHEN I SAW THE STAND OF
UNITED SODFTWARE MY HEART STOOD STILL FOR A MOMENT.A REALLY AMAZING BIG STAND
WITH A LIGHTSHOW AND ABOUT 10 TO 15 AMIGAS. ON EVERY AMIGA WAS RUNNING A NEW
GAME. SOME SCENES FROM COMPUTER GAMES WERE SHOWN ON A BIG SCREEN. IF THOSE
COMPANIES TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT THE BIG CRISIS THEY HAVE BCOZ OF CRACKING
I CAN'T BELIEVE THEM. I GOT NICE STICKERS FROM DIFFERENT GROUPS. WE (BOMBER,
UNKNOWN AND I) SPREADED A LOT OF VOTING SHEETS THERE. HOPE THEY'LL ALL FIND
THEIR WAY BACK TO ME ! ALL IN ALL THE AMI EXPO WAS A BIG SUCCESS. HOPE TO SEE

1. Hi Octoplex..first, tell me a bit about ya history:
Yes,ok. I started on the good old 64 in the year 1984 an just programmed
there in Basic. Then I bought a Amstrad and I was very interested in
programming this machine. Since 1988 I have an Amiga 2000. Since Summer
1989 I am in the real scene (swapping and so, ya know)
2. How many members are ya in Gate and in which countries they are living ?
In the moment, we are exectly 19 members.7 in Norway, 1 in UK and the rest
in Finland.
3. Do ya ever had problems with the police and with the Post ?
Police: no problems,coz of no copy-laws
Post: yes, coz of the faked stamps !!!
4. How much time do ya spend every day on ya computer ?
At the weekend 5 hours and in the week between a half and 1 hour.
(not very long I think!! ed.)
5. What are ya parents and ya girlfriend saying about ya computer.
My girlfriend things,that this is stupid and my parents even more !!!
6. What are ya other spare-time activities ?
Sport, football, partys, Disco, and meeting together with friends.
7. What is ya computer-conviguration ?
Oh, that's a lot... Amiga 2000, Monitor, 3 Diskdrives, a lot of disks,
Digitizer, Modem (14.4), Printer, Vidiocard, 5 MB Ram ....

8. What can we accpect in the futur of Gate ?
Mmh, let's think... our new Megademo and some Games.
9. What do ya think about the scene in the futur (Amiga Konsole?)
I don't know, but it will perhaps die in some years.
10. What do ya think about the friendship in the scene ?
Realy nice, quite cool !!!! (Friendship keeps the scene alive! ed.)

1. At first, inroduce yourself !
Well,my name is BANDOG and I am a coder of the BEASTIE BOYS.
I am 18 years old and those days I am learning the job of an electrician.
Maybe I should mention that I live in GERMANY ! (West,HEHE)
2. When was Beastie Boys found and why doesen't ya continued with
Irongods ?
Beastie Boys were found some years ago but died. The old members wanted
to rebuild the group so they offered us to join. So we did. We wanted to
change our name anyway ( coz of internal problems ) so this chance came in
the right moment !
3. How many members has BB now ?
At the moment we are 8 guys in BEASTIE BOYS. But we need more cool coders!
4. What's ya job in BB ?
My main activity in the group is to organize the german part of our group
and to do some (lame?) coding...
5. Have ya been in other groups before ?
Well, I started 1987 in IRONGODS. I stayed there until today coz I saw a
progress in that group. I also have a DEEP friendship to all the members.
6. What was ya biggest success ?
I had no REAL success yet.Of coz we always got responses according to our
intros / demos but there was nothing special yet.
7. What can we expect from BB in the future ? (The MegaDemo???)
YEAH ! You can expect our second MegaDemo soon (it's release-delay passed
4 months now !) and I hope that this will be a big success.

9. Do ya have problems with the police ?
Well,first time those assfuckers 'contacted' me in 1988 when I was on 64.
Since they had no real things against me it went out properly.
Exactly one year later I got a visit by those green pissers. They took
about 150 disks and 3 kg of old letters away. I had to pay 200 DM after
being on court. Now I am FUCKING LEGAL coz I am 18 and next time I would
kiss the ass by joining the jail ...!!
10 Did ya have an other computer before the Amiga or have ya still one ?
Yes,I owned a 64 for 4 years.But in 1988 I bought an AMIGA.
Nowadays I only own a full expanded AMIGA 500.
11 Do ya like copy-partys ?
I personally never visited any party although I got invitations by
TRISTAR , RADWAR IV , E & L , ALCATRAZ, IMP 666 & NO LIMITS, RAZOR 1911 !!
Maybe it depends on the fact that I have NO own car (yet) and so we had
no driver... But I think, copy-partys are a cool invention !
12 What do ya think about the scene today ?
The scene became SHIT ! Coz only SPEED rules so everybody buys a modem.
Where is the friendship ?? As far as I know there doesn't exit any letters
between the modem-traders !?
I think,a good personal contact to my mates is important !! But I must say
that the demos got a very HIGH Quality,it is always amazing what people
can get outta the AMIGA !!
13 What do ya make on saturday evenings ?
Well,sometimes I do some coding. Sometimes I visit a party (without comps)
anywhere to have fun and drink some beers. Usually I hang around at my
mates places...
14 Tell me ya favourit Beer.
I drink almost ANY beer (if it is cold) but I prefer good names like
VELTINS,WARSTEINER,BLKSTOFF !!

15 Do ya like the Hamburgers from McDonalds ? Do ya like anything from them ?
Yes,I love that shit food !! The bad thing is, that a hamburger costs 2 DM
and you have to eat 5 ones to get something into your stomach at least !

A:Hi, tell us a bit about yourself.
E:Well,I'm 17, nearly 6ft tall and I wear a size 9 shoe !
A:Ok. Tell us about your pirat carrer (C64, AMIGA)
E:My carrer started many months ago on a 64. Still an amazing computer. Then
in June last year I got my Amiga.I was very lame for quite a long time. Too
long. Now, I wouldn't say I'm famous yet,but I've definatly improved a lot.
A:Tell us something about Ensignia.
E:Ensignia has now 7 members:
4 coders, 1 music, 1 gfx and only 1 main swapper (me). We really are very
productive. At the moment we are concentrating on vectors, but we also
released 2 games and soon a mag. We are spread very far away from each
other (average 1500km !) which is a problem. No foreign divisions.
A:Have you ever confronted with the police or with the post ?
E:NO ! All police care about here is real crime, and anyway they wouldn't
know what pirated software is! South Africa is a hackers paradise, but the
only problem is the slow (1 week) post.
A:What is your opinion about wishes ?
E:My wish is to have a 14400 modem !
A:How much time do you spent in front of your computer ?
E:About 4 hours a day
A:What do your parent/girlfriend think about your computer-activities ?
E:They don't mind most of the time, but it does make problems sometimes.
A:What are your other spare-time activities ?
E:Riding motorbikes, playing squash and rugby
A:What's your full configuration ?
E:A500+512k 3,5 and 5,25 drives, Phillips sterio monitor and about 500 disks.
A:Futur planes of your group ?
E:Most importantly, fame. But also we want to open a fast board and get
envolved in making a great mag.

A:What do you think about the future of the scene(think of AMIGA-console)?
E:To be honest I think it stinks, especially the idea of CD's. In my opinion
this will kill all talent and ambition in the scene. Also you can't pirat
CD's !
A:What's your thoughts about the FRIENDSHIP ?
E:The Friendship movement is one of the best things that ever happened to the
scene. I just wish it could work well in South Africa. This is a very
aggressive country, so even if we are friendly it doesn't take to long for
someone to start threatening us with war or doing other VERY stupid things
I say "Let Friendship Rule !"

Zylon was founded in Februar 1990.

Some words from Filippetto/Amaze who rewrote the code. I don't know what you
think about this code,I don't care! I rewrote it because at the mo nearly all
magazines have 80 column text. Then I decided also to improve the selection
mode. In my opinion is much more intuitive and fast to select the articles
with the mouse than looking at the contents and then enter the number of the
page... Don't you think so,too?
We recommend you to send articles! Come on, be intelligent ! Are you a

¶WIZ STORY IN THE SCENE... (Wyrmslayer/Res.101)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All begun when I bought my first computer in 1986 ! It was a Commodore 128! I
started swapping and buying software from other guys and shops!! Then I found
my first group called DTS Group (still living!!!) My code name was Wiz and I
started to become a bit famous! But other times were arriving... I bought an
Amiga 500 and I was really happy of my new computer. I started again to swap
and buy soft from local software shops and guys and I founded my first group
on Amiga, it was called The Shadow Force! But my life as computer freak had
to change as I knew Filippetto (at that time member of the Zicco Zacco
Group!) This guy coded the first intro for me that wasn't ripped and we
started swapping demos and games ! Then I found an advertisement of Mr.Fly of
Italian Cracking Service! I phoned him and after two weeks or so I joined ICS
and then two weeks or so I asked Filippetto if he wanted to join ICS too and
he said yes !! I think I had a real good time in ICS as Filippetto did but
after one year or so we got tired of being member of this group because we
were the only active guys on Amiga!!! So after the cooperation of Savage and
ICS died we (Wiz and Filippetto) joined Savage! This group was our first real
big group with many members, skilled coders, good swappers and so on ! I
personally have to thank Savage for launching me in the great scene of Amiga.
Of course we improved more and more and Filippetto became a skilled coder and
I started to train and onepart the first games! I also did my first cracks...
This story continued till this summer...Then the mistake happened... Sterling
(hi my great friend!!!) left Savage coz he got sick of the scene and Saigon
(hi also to U my friend!!) had to take the whole HQ. So for a while we in
Savage Italy didn't get anything from the HQ...So Filippetto decided to leave
Savage, between us there weren't hard feelings! As said before it was all a
big mistake, coz Saigon had sent lot of stuff but the post in this case was
very very slow!!! So Filippetto joined Amaze and I decided to change name and
I took the code name of Wyrmslayer because there were too rumors spread about
Wiz! But then I decided to leave Savage and join Res.101! I think that is
really difficult to have good contacts between members while you live in
different countries! So no hard feelings! The best for you my dear friends in
Savage, expecially Sterling and Saigon ! Well this is the end of my story and
I hope that everyone understood why we left Savage ! Coz I heard some rumours
that we were saying that Savage got lame and so on!That isn't absolutely true
Now I'd like to have a good time in my new group and to improve my ability in
coding, cracking and training ! Bye !

¶GAIN TIME IN SWAPPING (Raistlin/NS)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each day, it's the same problem... you receive about 4 or 5 packs, and you
don't have always time to answer all of them in time, I mean the same day.
The best way to gain a lot of time is to take 2 or 3 good stuffs, and to copy
them with 'repeat' to all your contacts. While copying, just write some short
letter for each normal pack. Put the faked stamps, and mail them !!!
Always wait a bit and write a long letter for your best friends.At least they
won't scream about the stuffs you send !!! ( not like the swap-machines... ).
Also try to have a good utility to print addresses on envelopes, if you
haven't got a printer, just organize a cool address-book and don't forget
to write each new address you get in it. If it's a book, hide it !!! Cops may
find it...
If lame people write you because of an advert somewhere in diskmag, just give
the pack to one of your cool friend who's not as good as you, but try anyway
not to keep the disk and not to burn the letter, that's not a cool act !
If you've time, use the 'swap-it' program... it's easier to find a stealer
later...
That's all...next time I'll tell you how to code a megademo in 2 days.

¶HOW TO SWAP SOMETHING ELSE (Raistlin/Northstar)

Introduction
------------
Why should we always swap boring disks, with always the same stuff on it,
... I mean always dirty introcollections full of 'first demo by lamamia',
'compussylation #3652', and nameless things like that... cool people try to
send pictures, music, chocolate, and even beer. Funny eh ? It's the best way
to make friends, and to say later to your son or daughter: 'once i swapped
teethpaste and russian carpets'! Okay, in fact i'm writing this article not
to tell you to swap such stuffs, but the way to mail them...
You want to send illegal (in most of cases...) :
------------------------
First of all, don't write any sender address if what you send is illegal
things like: weapons, vegetables, fish, bombs, and toys that postmen and
custom-house officiers don't like very much... in this case, better send all
in a little box with a lot of adhesive paper, to discourage them to open
it, because don't forget that if they want, they can open your pack without
your permission !!! Don't forget also to put the right postage and a readable
address. On the back side of the pack, in the custom sticker, write that it's
a present, and something like 'vhs', or 'book'.
If you also wanna send a letter in the pack, send it separately.And to reduce
the risk of losing something, better make a different pack for each item.
You want to send legal : (no risk, no fun!)

If you want to send books, shoes, guitars, vhs, audio, etc... just put it
in a workable box that you buy at the post ( about $2 ), put your stuff in
it, close it ( put some adhesive if you want... ) and send it !!! If it's
a very expensive stuff, better send in registered (mainly if you're sending
from france !!!).
Anyway,keep in mind that what you're doing is totally legal! (why not putting
fake stamps if you wanna stay normal ???).If you send LP's or fragile things,
take your wall-blaster pen and write near the address: 'fragile' or 'handle
with care', or 'explosives'...
I think I told all what I know about this subject...send me a letter if you
think something I told was wrong, or if you'd like to improve something,

- I have about 40 good contacts. In the summer I had about 80 contacts, so I

- Yeah, the first thing I do when I'm home from school is to check out the
post. So the afternoon I copy and write letters to my contacts. And then in
the evening I do my homework and after that I chat with some friends in
town and sometimes we drink a lot and then it's very hard to be me, coz
you're going to school next day.
- Describe your family!
- Really good friends when you are in troubles... I don't think I wanna write
about my family, coz it's simply too boring for you to read.

- The best copy party I have visited was the RSI and TSL summer conference 90

¶SMAU PARTY REPORT

An exciting paddy report written by Filippetto/Amaze, Bitjoker/Res.101 and
Alter Ego/Pioneers.
This amazing report about the GREAT party organized at the SMAU in Milan is
refering to the last day coz we arrived there only sunday (fuckin' school...)
We (Filippetto, Bitjoker and Alter Ego) had to meet at the railstation in
Padova at 8:00 AM.After some minutes (Bitjoker is always late) we started our
trip to Milan by train... The trip was not so cool, coz Bitjoker was always
looking to the girl to his left, Filippetto was studying the ' Against
Eratostene' greek oration by Lisia and Alter Ego was talking with Filippetto
about his neighbour who is a drummer who's better than him (Filippetto)
in playing drums and also is loved by the girl who's loved by him... At 10:40
(late) we arrived in Milan and we had to go to our friend Patrick of Abakus,
but there was such a fuckin' noise that we couldn't recognize what subway to
take and so Filippetto called Patrick. While he was talking a group of
hooligans passed by and so he didn't understand almost a fuck. Anyway we
reached to meet Patrick and we went to the SMAU with him and a german friend
of him. After entering (of course Bitjoker failed to compile his module) we
decided to eat something and we went to buy 4 hot dogs and 4 cokes... Patrick
was back with 5 hot dogs and 7 cokes, we don't know why... Then Patrick went
to the empty cans cruncher and crunched 2 full cans causing a noise...
At this point we decided to join the party (?) with the other groups and so
we entered the CBM stand where we meet Paranoid, Terminator and some other
guys of Zero Defects (hi Xenio!) plus some guys of High Tension, and Marco
of Dreams of Power (now in Zero Defects).

All the released demos had been shown in the previous days...
All we could see was a bunch of lamers playing some original games for free..
Patrick used his knife to unlock one of the locked Amigas that were there
to play the games and showed some stuff, and Filippetto took the opportunity
to show to just a few people the Kick Ouch Demo (coz at that time he still
was a member of Savage). Since he place was too narrow we went to Patrick's
house to see and copy some stuff. Patrick used his fuckin' Syncro Express and
of course there were 1 disk out of 5 without errors, anyway...
At 16:00 we back to the SMAU and this time it was much funnier coz we met
Storm and Mr.Copper of Divina who are very cool and friendly. We made an
interview with them and we greeted some guyz of ZD who were leaving. Then we
went around with Patrick, Paranoid/ZD, Dreams of Power, High Tension, Venice
Connection and Divina. Paranoid took a photo of us with his camera found in
the Dash (20 minutes to load the flash), then we made another interview with
High Tension who released maybe the best SMAU demo.Suddenly some men came and
made a job offer to all coders, Filippetto and Magic P went to a phone to try
the trick to call for free. At 17:30 we went out to go home after havin'
greeted Tomcat of Quartex and of course all the other guyz.
The weather was a real shit (rain and cold) and we hadn't a sunshade with us
(we took with us sunglasses and summer wearings...) so everyone repaired his
head as well as he can.
Of course we had to find the subway station but it wasn't easy with
such a rain... So Bitjoker, who seemed a priest, a sked to an astonished
policeman where the fuck was the subway station. The policeman told us the
direction and so we ran in the rain for 2 minutes till we reached the
station... Filippetto seemed a wet little chicken, and the Subway was full
of people crunched into a small space... Finally we arrived to the rail
station, Bitjoker finally managed how to use his 50.000 liras and payed 3
sandwiches also for Filippetto and Alter Ego. Finally at 19:00 we started our
trip back to Padova in a train full of people like hell, but luckily after
almost 1 hour we found 3 empty seats.But something terrible had to happen. In
the middle of the trip the train stopped coz the motor broke down.. So we
arrived to Padova at about 24. Anyway it was a cool day and we meet a lot of
cool and more or less friendly guyz... And we would like to send our special
handshakes to Patrick/Abakus, Storm and Mr.Copper/Divina and all the ZD
members...
¶ECS (Raistlin/North Star)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you may know the new chipset is composed by a SuperAgnus + SuperDenise.The
first characteristic of these new chips is that you have 1 Mb of CHIP RAM
(Cont. Video Memory). Of course, because of these new capacities, some
registers had been modified to create new ones andto improve themselves, but
with keeping the compatibility with the old Chips.Of course if the programmer
use the new ones, this won't work on old ones, so you must choose between new
capacities or compatibility. Some improvements of the new Chips...
- 32K*32K pixels Blits.
- New HiRes mode in 1280*512 with 2 bitplanes.
- Mode 'Productivity' 640*480 with 2 Bitplanes no interlace.
This last mode requires a multi-sync monitor and is the same as the VGA 3
standard 8514/A mode. About the KickStart V1.4,it will be usable by the A1000
that can't receive the ECS, and by the A500 - A2000,even if they aren't whole
enhanced(The whole equipment is: SuperAgnus+SuperDenise+Monitor Multi-sync or
Bi-Sync). There's also a device which you can work with multiples grey shades
with a A2024 monitor, and this up to 1008*1024. This last mode is made by the
soft and the monitor's hard. It doesn't require ECS. On the other hand, you
must have the Kick 1.4 libraries,so the A1000 can use it with a A2024 monitor
In fact, it's only a juxtaposition of 4 Hires Interlace Screens that is made
by the monitor. All these modes can't work together because of the differents
beam frequencies,even on a A2024 Monitor.Another new thing about these Chips:
You are able to use another color than Color00 for the GenLock user.About the
new Agnus, it can do 32768*32768 pixels blits.The size of the blit is written
on the BLTSIZE register and runs when you write the size onto this register
The bits 0 to 5 show the number of wordsto transfer (What can make a 1024
(2*(5 bits * 2 bytes). The 10 l ast bits code the number of lines to blit,
from 0 to 1023 also.The init of this register is calculated like that: Height
<< 6 + Width >> 4... (W and H in pixels). It is impossible to make blits with
a size > 1024*1024 with the old Agnus, that's why there's two more registers:
BLTSIZVand BLTSIZH. The first one is containing 15 bits that accept 32768
lines and 10 bits for the 2048 words=32768 pixels. First you must initialize
BLTSIZV, and then BLTSIZH (that runs the DMA).

To use these new capacities, together in keeping the compatibility, you must
know which chip you have to use. So you simply have to test VPOSR ($004):

The bits from I0 to I6 show which register it is:

And in $07C is found the DENISEID register that contains $FC in these 8 low
significant bits, beware anyway because this register exists only on
SuperDenise (8373) and not on the original DENISE (8362). Still in DENISE,you
can use the SuperHiRes mode that allows you to have a 1280 pixels Width
without the Multi Sync monitor. With the 320*200 in 6 bitplanes (64 colors)
with 140ns pixels, and in 640*400 with 70ns pixels and 4 BitPlanes (16 col.),
but the palette is divided in two because ofthe DMA that can't follow. And
with the SuperHires mode, 35ns pixels, there's 2 Bitplanes (4 colors). Here
the palette is only 64 colors long. Of course you can use the Interlace mode
and then you will have a 1080*512 screen, which could be interesting for the
PageMaking. Here's some modifies for the BPLCON0: ($100)

The productivity mode is a 640*480 mode(=NTSC Overscan) not interlaced with 4
colors among 64, but it requires a multisync monitor. These 2 modes have got
70ns sprites (hires), contrary to the classic sprites that run in 140ns
(lores). Of course, the SPRxPOS and SPRxCTL registers have been modified to
allow these new capacities.There's also about 30 new registers (Agnus+Denise)
to program the ECS Chips. Netherless, the old registers that have been
modified are still compatible with new ones. About the graphic library, all
the old functions have been modified and they consider or not the new ECS
capacities. For the productivity mode,there is two functions: OpenMonitor and
CloseMonitor, that double the video beam frequency (with again a multisync/
bisync monitor). Intuition has also been modified and uses the new ECS
improvements or not. Hope ya can use this little (!) article translated from
