µ* INTRODUCTION *¡
Long time, no see! After several months of
silence, PEANUTS 2 is finally ready. This time
with a perfectioned code and some new graphics.
Some people have advised us to use "chip sound"
in this pack-mag (e.g. in order to cut down the
loading time), but we think it's more important
to have a real sound than to save a few seconds
of loader-time! If you disagree with this, then
come on with some feedback!
The controls are still the same - use the arrow
keys to scroll the text, and the mouse or the
arrow keys combined thih <return> to select in
the menus.
Back to the music: Perhaps not all of you freaks
out there enjoy this marvellous classical piano
piece by Brainbug as much as I do, but you have
to admit that it sends those lousy 20K intro-
tunes straight into the waste basket!! But keep
in mind that we would always like to get your
opinion about Peanuts, so please write a few
lines and tell us what you think!
Now, that should be about all. We hope you will
enjoy this issue of Peanuts - and please support
us with some articles, jokes, poems, whatever
you think is worth writing about in the summer
heat! Here follows some technical information:
µABOUT THE GRAPHICS¡
Some info about the PEANUTS-gfx is also provided in this text, cause
we think it really is necessary writing about it. First of all,
let's talk about the
©µMENU-PICTURE¡
This one was drawn by ILUVATAR of ALCATRAZ, who lives in
Austria. As many of you freaks might have guessed, this
picture is NOT DRAWN WITH 16 COLOURS!! Iluvatar only used 8
colours (!), and we in Alcatraz really think that this is a
thing worth mentioning. Actually it's one of the best
3-plane pictures ever made, that's for sure! So if you like
this picture, then vote for ILUVATAR / ALCATRAZ in the
coming Eurochart! By the way, ILUVATAR will do some
*SMASHING* title pictures for the upcoming issues of McDisk.
He will prove you that he really is a number-1 artist.
ºAbout ILUVATAR... He is 20 years old, he lives in a flat in
Graz, where he's studying architecture. On paper he draws
even better than on the computer, that indicates that he
really is a super-talent. In former times he was in Fraxion
and Energy, but he left these groups because he wasn't quite
satisfied with the other gfx'ers. He's in ALCATRAZ since
1991, and we wish him a long and joyful stay here, because
he's a real friend! Grüße, Joachim!
©µSMALL MENU-LOGO¡
The menu-logo in the very 1st issue of PEANUTS was NOT done
by PGCS / ALCATRAZ, as the credits claimed. Sorry for this
fault, but it was caused by a misunderstanding between
Disney and Micro-Pal. The logo in the 1st issue was done
by Disney, who actually isn't a gfx'er. So sorry for
defamation, PGCS!
The current menu-logo was done by ILUVATAR and will be used
in all the coming PEANUTS! Amen!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
©Now - go on and check out this Peanuts release! Next Peanuts will be
©out in 2-3 weeks (At the very beginning of July). Make sure you do
©not miss it! And all coming Peanuts releases.... About every 3 weeks
©there will be a fresh issue out. So long!

µINTERVIEW WITH JESTER OF SANITY¡
Done by Disney of Alcatraz
Disney of Alcatraz had a little letter-chat with µJESTER of SANITY¡,
who is the musicbox behind well known productions such as "FOOL'S
GOLD", "ELYSIUM" and "JESTERDAY". Let's see if we are able to get
some facts about his person...
µ ¡
ºOh yeah, Jester - let's start off with the
ºusual crap! Would you tell us your real name,
ºage, sex (?) and the like? Just give a little
ºdescription about your looking and
ºpersonality!
©Hi folks ! People call me Jester, even tough my real name is
©Volker. The world was blessed with my appearance on the
©12.08.1972. While I grew up I developed dark brown hair, grey
©eyes, a 1.81 m tall body and a weight of 80 kg. I wear my pair
©of Armani spectacles like a crown for I like my looks better
©with it. Actually, I am not so very flamboyant - I don't like
©boozing, going out, smoking or taking drugs for I feel more
©comfortable at home and without them. Still I like meeting
©people to discuss or to get to know them.
µ ¡
ºIt seems like Sanity is one of the major
ºgroups in Europe now, more and more guys have
ºjoined. Do you like that, or do you prefer
ºbeing in a rather small group? Is there one
ºorganizer in Sanity, who decides if the guys
ºcan join, or do all Sanity-members discuss
ºabout that?
©You're right - we have grown a lot recently but I think it's a
©rather positive fact. Of course it's poor to have more than 30
©members with the major part of them being unactive but as I see
©it we have only let true professionals join us so in fact we
©have reinforced our powers. There are two main organizers in
©Sanity which are Diddle (Swapper) and Chaos (Coder). Usually
©they decide about letting people in but when someone is to be
©kicked the major part has to agree. We try to establish a true
©democracy in our crew so hopefully we will succeed. My
©dreamteam, though, would consist of only 5 people (2 coders, 1
©gfx artist, 1 musician, 1 swapper) all living in the same town
©and all being high quality.
µ ¡
ºI think most of the readers know your song
ºfrom "ELYSIUM". How long did it take to
ºfinish this tune? Can you remember? When did
ºyou start making music on a computer?
©Well, I started this tune even before I had the preversion of
©the demo in my hands. The title is, by the way, my invention
©and was later also taken for the demo. I would say that I
©needed about 6 to 8 hours for the tune, including all the
©composing, arranging and correcting the details. The song
©mainly wasn't written at my place (my monitor was broken) but at
©a friend's (Hi Frank !) house. It was cool to collect the
©samples for he has got a huge harddisk - it's so fast ! I've
©been doing computer music for about 2 years now, even though I
©had no idea of music whatsoever in the beginning. My earliest
©pieces were used in demos by Treacl.
µ ¡
ºDo you create all your samples on your own, or
ºdo you swap with other musicians? How
ºimportant are, from your point of view, the
ºsamples for the quality of a song?
©When I first started I did all the samples myself but the
©quality was really bad so I used a lot of ripped samples soon.
©In the beginning of 1991 I started to create my own samples
©again which I still do. To my mind, it's better to use selfmade
©samples for you can create the sounds 100% as you need them for
©the tune on your synth which is not the case with the ripped
©stuff.
©The quality of a song mainly depends on the composition, of
©course, but a good set of sounds is decicive for the effect that
©a tune has on the listener. It is not so important that the
©samples themselves are good but that they fit each other. That
©is the reason why I hate people who just clear the notes of a
©song and work with the set of samples someone else has made up
©(as for example Wave of Design).
µ ¡
ºAre you interested in politics, or don't you
ºcare about those fat guys, called politicians?
ºWhat about those neo-nazis, who seem to be a
ºgrowing group in more and more countries?
ºAlso the party of Adolf Hitler was small in
ºit's beginning, but then it grew faster and
ºfaster. Do you think that something similar
ºcould happen again? What does the german
ºpopulation think about neo-nazis today?
©I think it's good of you to ask such a question. In fact, I
©have a great interest in politics and ideologies. The new rise
©of the fascists really makes me worry for I always have in mind
©what once happened to the world when they ruled. When I hear
©fascists talk I can't believe how someone can be that stupid -
©all they seem to have in mind is violence and making other
©people responsible for their miserable situation. Their highly
©primitive ideals (manlike strength) and their simple, polemic
©speeches seem so very ludicrous to me that I don't understand
©why so many people join their forces.
©The guys I have talked to think of this matter just like me.
µ ¡
ºHave you been at many computer-parties? Which
ºwas the best one? Have you ever reached the
ºtop 3 in a competition?
©I don't like parties - long driving, a lot of expenses, always
©the same. Even though I have been to some like the 'Maximum
©Pleasure' or the first 'Treacl-Panic-Party'. The one I liked
©best was the Prime'91 for there were a lot of friends (Hi Retep
©and Tomcat of Mirage !).
©In almost all the competitions that I took part in I reached the
©top3, for example on the Action Party (1990) I ended up third or
©on some other (Exort-Elica or so) I even got in position 1. It
©may seem strange but I never was present at any of the parties
©for which I contributed to the soundcompetitions while on the
©parties I visited there either was no competition or I arrived
©after the deadline. Another thing is that I actually never
©received any money because the people who took my pieces to the
©party never sent or gave me the prizes ! So if you want to make
©me lucky send in some money or other gifts to support me in my
©work. By the way, I can also be hired for your very own
©production !
µ ¡
ºWhat does your Amiga-configuration look like?
ºDo you have any special devices, for instance
º8 MB RAM, 600 MB harddisk, multisync
ºmonitor...
©No, not that special, just an external drive and an extension to
©1MB. For sampling I use a DeLuxe Sound Sampler and for MIDI an
©interface. The sources are CDs, 12 inch mixes or various synths
©and keyboards that I own myself or borrow.
µ ¡
ºHow many contacts do you have in the scene?
ºAre many unknown guys writing to you? Do you
ºanswer their letters? What do you think about
ºpeople who use the word "lamer" in every
ºsentence?
©I don't quite know how many contacts I have but I guess about 15
©to 20 which is enough for me. After "Elysium" I got loads of
©letters and I answered all of them but of course not all my
©replies were positive. Nowadays I get about 2 letters a day
©which means lots of new contacts. I turn down most of the
©offers for I don't find them interesting or because I can't
©afford them. Yet I usually answer all letters because I don't
©like getting no reply when I contact someone either. I have to
©admit that I prefer swapping with people from abroad because I
©find it more interesting to write in English and getting to know
©other countries and their habits, esp. British people are
©great!
©Dudes who use "lamer" all the time consider themselves very
©cool, I guess, but probably they just want to hide how poor
©their own skills are and in order to feel part of "the elite".
©Isn't that psychological ?!
µ ¡
ºI know you have got a girlfriend. Is there a
ºdividing line between computer-scene and
ºprivate life? Is your girl interested in your
ºwork on the computer? Or does she hate this
ºmachine, for you don't spend all your time
ºwith her?
©For me there is a clear division between private life and
©computer while my private life is much more important to me. My
©girlfriend likes some of the music I make but by far not all. I
©have found out that she likes the disco pieces best and hates
©everything that's not so well arranged or has something
©"solo-like" in it. A musician she seems to like is Romeo Knight
©for he's so poppy and nice in sound. Still she prefers my real
©music (with synth and vocals) and I have to say she is a tough
©and honest critic. When we meet she doesn't like me turning on
©the Amiga for too long which is understandable, I find.
µ ¡
ºTell us why you like your favourite...
ºµCODER:¡ ©THE SPY / CRIONICS - great
©ideas plus high skills -
©that's how it has to be !
ºµGRAPHICIAN:¡ ©HAVOK - not only a great
©friend but as well someone
©who combines great ideas,
©strong technique and
©wonderful colours in his
©works. A lot of Amiga
©artists just copy from
©books - HE DOESN'T ! He
©is a true artist in every
©respect.
ºµMUSICIAN:¡ ©MANTRONIX for his marvellous
©way to set chords and the
©maturity in his pieces. I
©really admire his
©originality.
©MOBY because there is a lot
©of variation and feeling in
©his tunes. He is able to
©combine catchy melodies with
©funky solo passages. I
©would say he is one of my
©biggest influences for I
©already liked his very early
©musics for Dragons etc. I
©can't say who of the two is
©better.
©There are a lot of other musicians I like as Heatbeat /
©Carillion, Virgill / SNT, Romeo Knight/TRSI, TIP / PHA etc. I
©hate "musicians" who can only do house and techno crap - IT JUST
©SUCKS !
µ ¡
ºWhat's your favourite real music?
©Mainly melancholic, melodious music, for example Pet Shop Boys,
©New Order, The Smiths, Erasure, Frankie goes to Hollywood,
©Banderas, Alphaville, Dead or Alive. Also early 80s and
©classical music (Mozart, Grieg, Tchaikowsky and Beethoven)
©Actually, music is very important in my life.
µ ¡
ºNow I'm going to confront you with some single
ºexpressions. Please tell us what comes to
ºyour mind then. Funny psycho-game, hehe!
* ºPet Shop Boys:
©Intelligent, cynical, genious,idols.
* ºMcDisk, the diskmag:
©Still on the rise.
* ºAmiga with 16 sound channels:
©Utopia.
* ºBocholter copyparties:
©Thank god they're not held anymore.
* ºThe german scene:
©Uninteresting.
* ºJester / Sanity:
©The man in the mirror.
* ºZZ-Top:
©Simple but funky n'groovy.
* ºMcDonald's Duck:
©The choice of a dumb generation.
* ºChaos' ZINE-coding:
©Well done.
* ºODYSSEY by ALCATRAZ:
©Classical.
* º'Happy Day' orange juice:
©I prefer the 'Aldi' one (hehe).
µ ¡
ºDo you still have fun in the scene, or do you
ºcount yourself to the ones who get more and
ºmore bored? Are you motivated to do new
ºtunes? Where do you take your inspiration
ºfrom?
©Yes, I get more and more bored because I get the impression that
©all the talented people seem to withdraw from the scene. There
©are too many guys copying what someone else has done before.
©First I found that the scene was a great outlet for one's
©creativity but not anymore. My motivation to compose music,
©though, has nothing to do with the scene - I compose to express
©ideas and feelings so that's a rather personal thing. My
©inspiration mostly comes out of emotions but as well I can feel
©inspired by a painting or even a sentence someone says (as it
©happened with one of my "vocal pieces"). It is easier for me to
©compose if I have a demo or a picture that I can support with
©the music.
µ ¡
ºAre you working on a new sounddisk, which is
ºgoing to be called "JESTERDAY"?? YES?! Are
ºyou allowed to tell us some facts, or is it
ºall "Top Secret"?
©No, it's not so secret. Some days ago I finished working on the
©tunes and the final production is to be released on the
©Cebit'92. Funnily enough, this is exactly one year after
©"Fool's Gold".
©On the new one there is far more variation, the styles really
©differ a lot, there even is one REAL surprise. It also features
©stunning GFX by my pal Havok and our very own Cougar plus a new
©inventive piece of code by Chaos. I hope it will be a smasher
©for I put quite some work in it.
µ ¡
ºWhat do you think about the demo-scene on the
ºAmiga? In the end of 1991, it seemed as if we
ºwould drown in all those vectors, but there
ºwere some real revolutions in the past months.
ºJust think of Hardwired, Odyssey, Elysium,
ºVector Exterminator, Primus and the like.
ºWhat would be your favourite "demo-style" for
ºthe future?
©The good productions get rare, I believe. Just look at those
©myriads of diskmags that currently appear. Why can't people try
©to come up with something original and really NEW ?! My
©favourite demo would feature loads of ideas plus professional
©design (still it could be 'Hardwired') and a smashing disco tune
©with a melody that gets hooked in your ear. So to speak I would
©like more demos that remind you of a videoclip or a film.
©"Cebit'90" and "Hardwired" are steps in the right direction.
µ ¡
ºWhat do you love?
©My girlfriend, Ginger Ale, writing lyrics, music, sex, dawn,
©rain, dark colours, my room, films, showering, meeting foreign
©people, looks of Italian people, British humour (Monty Python),
©reading Oscar Wilde, being successful, interviews.
µ ¡
ºWhat do you hate?
©fascists, sports, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, stupidity,
©violence, junk-English (C U L8R), war, the army, authorities,
©bright colours, noise, metal, rap, techno, hiphop, boring demos,
©machos, chauvinists, losing, going out, parties, blondes.
µ ¡
ºWell, I think it's time to stop our little

There is much talk about parties nowadays. Parties seem to be
organized everywhere - all the time. But there is one party
which by many people is said to be the best party ever:
Remember THE PARTY? Yes, it's the one with about 1250 people...
And it took place in Denmark last Xmas. Well, lastest news is
that in December 1992 there will be held
ºT-H-E P-A-R-T-Y I-I
in Aalborg, Denmark. After the great success last year, there
will probably come even more people this year! This is all the
info provided yet, but I suppose there will be intros and
invitations out in plenty of time before the big event.
ð µFEEDBACK!¡
©I have received quite a lot of letters since PEANUTS #1 was
©released, and I wanted to include one of them in this 2nd
©edition - because it contains some interesting questions.
©The letter is from Tab/Masquerade.
Your idea about the pack-mag was a very good idea, but I do
however have a few more ideas that you might would like to
give a thought...
1. Let people choose if they only would like to have a
directory of the demos in order to save time each time one
has to exit a demo, because if you would like to have more
advertisements in Peanuts, it will take more time to load
the Selector, and people will get bored. But if they could
choose, so that they could skip the articles and ads after
reading them, they would have appreciated Peanuts even more.
2. Don't allow the same group to have two advertisements,
it's enough with one ad per group.
3. Choose a victim who you'd like to interview; write about
in each number of Peanuts. It doesn't have to be wellknown
persons. (Now it sounds as if it's going to be a diskmag,
but it will not.)
©Well, well, first of all: The advertisements were not
©loaded into Peanuts#1 before you chose to load them! But
©this time they are resident in memory, due to some trouble
©with decrunch routines just before the release. However -
©in coming Peanuts releases, all the text will be in a
©separate directory on the disk. That means it will not
©matter how many ads there are - it'll take no more time to
©load the selector itself. The reason why Peanuts takes some
©time to load is mainly that we've chosen to have some real
©music in Peanuts, and not those terrible 5K packmenu
©"tunes"...
© As for the advertisements we will allow multiple ads from
©one group, but if the same group sends *LOTS* of ads, we
©will of course not publish them (unless we get paid for it).
© About the interviews... You'll be glad to see that this
©issue of Peanuts contains an interview with Jester/Sanity.
©Hopefully there will be more interviews in future PEANUTS.ÿ
ð µEDITOR'S VOICE¡
As you will have noticed, there are some more articles now -
compared to PEANUTS #1. But... as I said before, I don't want
this section to become like a diskmag, so it'll only contain a
certain amount of stories... I would appreciate if you could
send me some words on how you feel about PEANUTS - and
especially the Articles section.
Remember - the main idea behind this production is to make a
quality packdisk, and to make it even more interesting by
including a few lines of text!ÿ

ð µA WIND OF CHANGE¡
Diskmags... A pain in the ass for the editors, and lots of fun
for the readers! ºZINE was the ruling diskmag for a long time,
but Brainstorm is split up now, and ZINE is dead. I supposed
Chester and Orlando almost worked their butts off before they
finally decided to end the whole thing. This happened just
after they got the new code by ºChaos/Sanity, and everything
seemed to work out so nice!
No, I'm not writing any necrology... I'm just having a look at
the facts. In addition to the death of ZINE, ºCrusaders got
tired of releasing their so popular ºEurochart. Many people
thought that the end of The Official Eurochart would mean that
people were not as encouraged to do scene-stuff on their Amigas
anymore. Anyway - everybody can be happy now, because the
Eurocharts will be released by ºStatic Bytes and ºKefrens in the
future. Please send your votes to:
© The Official Eurochart
© Tornevangsvej 5b
© DK-3460 BIRKEROED
© DENMARK!
...and be quick if you want your votes included in their first
issue: Send your votes ºno later than June 23rd! Let's keep the
tradition going!
Latest diskmag news is that also ºHack-Mag might be dead.
Rumours say so - and from the information I have, they seem
pretty unorganized at the moment. It will be a pity if another
nice diskmag dies - but it's real hard work to do a mag, and
people seem to get, so to speak, DEAD TIRED of it after doing it
for a period of time.
However: We in ºALCATRAZ can ensure you that ºMc Disk will stay
strong. It's now better than ever, and if more people supported
us, that surely would keep it on the top. So - don't sit there
simply reading all the stuff, do something yourself! Load your
favourite text editor, and start writing! It isn't that hard,
you know. Send your articles, ads, news etc. for ºMc Diskº or
ºPeanuts to the following addresses:

ð µWHAT'S ON THIS DISK?¡
This time I've included the latest version of
ºProTracker on the disk. There has been much talk
about the PT lately, and especially the version that
ºNoxious released at ºThe Gathering. This version was
full of bugs; simply ºterrible to work with. The
version number was 2.1A (!)
Rumours before the party were that ºAmiga Freelancers
would release a new ºProTracker at the party. But in
stead, Noxious released that terrible version of
theirs. There has been many versions of PT out since
January - and it's no wonder that people out there get
confused! So therefore, I decided to put the latest
working version of this so popular tracker on disk.
This works ºperfect under OS2, and a few bugs are
removed. You can use the old 1.1B+ playroutine and
helptexts. Enjoy this fine piece of work from Amiga
Freelancers!
Another utility included on the disk is the ºGIF
ºconverter by Geert 'Cool-G' Coelmont. It's quite
useful - read the docs for further information! As if
this wasn't enough, I've also included the new
ºStonecruncher.
The other stuff on the disk is real ºscene-stuff: A
new diskmag called Resident, an Anarchy intro (Cool
music by Nuke), and a Dual Crew BBS intro. Enjoy!ÿ
Just for your information... Here is some news about
changes in ºAlcatraz: As you probably have noticed, the
ºMcDisk team joined ºAlcatraz some time ago - and ºMcDisk#4
was released a month ago. Issue 5 of this great magazine
will be out this very summer!
Alcatraz now has sections in Austria, France, Germany,
Malta, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. A total number of 25
members.
The last person to join Alcatraz was the superb musician
ºLizardking from Sweden. A music compilation (2 disks)
containing music by ºBrainbug and ºLizardking will be out
this summer.
ºHello, French Riviera!
The sun, The sea... Unbelieveable, eh? Sorry for all delays,
mate! I have no excuses - and will only send own prod's from now
on. Are the preparations for the big party on schedule? A pity I
can't go down there!
See you later - right here in the Land of Vikings!
ºOld Chap!
Say - how are things going in good old England? Is it only rain
and cold wind from the North down there? No, I suppose the girls
are walking around in their tiny bikinis and... . .
Anyway - thanks for your letter - now enjoy this ATZ production!ÿ
ºCalling Finland!
How's your programming doing? Have you finished that utility by
now? Perhaps beta-testing? I hope it doesn't interfere with your
composing, because I enjoyed a couple of your "happy" tunes!
Too Much In Mind - I hope you enjoy this little tune of mine!
ºCheers!
Gee... - I was going to send you some candy, but somehow I've
managed to lose your address! Please send it as soon as possible
in order to get one of those surprise packages...
NO to the Union down there?! What's happening, man? Send a fresh
report, please!ÿ
ºYeah!
Final Whistle rules! Flush that old K.O.2 down the toilet! Let's
have a couple of matches soon, ok?
Lamertester = still cool... but I'm waiting for the ºEurocharts!
I am really looking forward to see the old Crusaders tradition
continue! So - get to work, and don't be such a Playboy µall¡ the
time!
Last minute: Thanks for the letter! Of course I'll spread
those voting forms! Nice to hear that the Eurochart is on
schedule. Maybe we'll meet at THE PARTY II in December... Who
knows?
ºMore coding?
Nice working together with you at The Gathering! Shooting those
pictures sure took some time - but what great ºFUN!
So - what's your next project? Are you working on something, or
are you lying on that beach all day long doing nothing? Is your
town a TRASH CITY due to this darned strike? Well - it's over
now, so let's smile and have phun!ÿ
ºNag, nag, nag!
Another day, another year.... R.A.W. issue 100! Will it be a
reality? Nah, we don't know for sure, do we? But numero 3 is out
soon, I hope! Come on, we want moooooooore!!
It sure was nice to meet you at the party! We especially enjoyed
the way you handled that enormous butter stain on your shoe!
Well done, dude...ÿ
ºHello again, Oystein!
It was really nice chatting with you at The Gathering. I hope
you like my piano tune in this issue of Peanuts. It's definately
not one of those regular "hip-hop" tunes. I tried to make it as
real as possible, and I think I have succeded - but that's not
up to me to decide.
Well - perhaps we'll meet at another party soon; meanwhile - go
buy yourself an Ensoniq SD-1! It's worth it. Have fun!
ºBurp!
Say - how are things in Nemesis nowadays? Congrats with the
phonebill! But it won't beat my Booze-bill, that's for sure!
Also say hello to Tactel from me. Hope we meet soon at another
party somewhere! Would be real kewl, dudes!ÿ
ºHot Summer!
Soory for being lazy - I haven't forgotten about you! But you
see... It's the sun, the sea, the chicks... The weather has
been UNBELIEVEABLE here on the Lofoten Islands the last weeks,
so...
But I'm catching up now, so you can send all the cool stuff you
want! The reply will come, that's for sure!ÿ
ºPublic Enemy!
To the person who kindly let me play my ©Public Enemy CD on his
HIFI equipment at The Gathering: I forgot my Compact at your
stand! If you have it -> please return it, and I'll send you
some good ©beer in return!
