 INTRODUCTION
 ------------

Welcome! Bienvenue! Willkommen! Recepcion! And just for Xad, Benvenuto!

Ladies & Gentlemen, we present to you:

THE GAMEBOY CHARTS for APRIL/MAY 1999.

For those of you sitting there mumbling "Not another one", I'm afraid the
answer is yes! After loaded/EUR got our hopes up by releasing a quality
chart for MARCH, we were expecting to sit back and relax while he did all
the work...so we sat back, and we sat, and then our asses got all numb and
there STILL wasn't an issue 2..

We decided that if everyone sat around and waited, there would be no GBC
charts, and that would suck. Anyway, we don't have to explain the reasons
for the charts to you people, do we?

Gilligan and Rotox did all the hard work you see below, and should be
applauded for their efforts...this particular issue includes both April &
May results for the reasons listed above - expect future issues to be
monthly, but only time will tell!

And so, without further ado, on with the show!

                                                              - Wayne Kerr

 RULES & POINTS
 --------------

-1 Point - DUPE: Released a game, but only after another group already beat
             you? -1 point then.
PROTECTED: Released a game, but only emulamers can play it?
-1 point too! This point then gets added to the points for
the first group to release a working crack.
BROKEN: If you release a game/trainer/crack that doesn't work,
             -1 time!

+0 Points - NON-COLOR: Mono GB or SGB games are listed for posterity, but
             receive no points. Similarly, a trainer/crack for a GB/SGB-only
             game will receive 0 points.
FIX: You get 0 points for fixing one of your own mistakes.

 +1 Point - AVERAGE TRAINER: A +1 or +2 trainer receives 1 point.
OTHER FIX: If you fix a release from another group, you get +1
             for highlighting their incompetence!

+2 Points - AVERAGE FOREIGN: Foreign (non-English) games receive 2 points,
even if the game has previously been released in another
             language. JAP/GER/FRA/SPA, whatever.
A European release of a previously available US release will
             also receive 2 points.
QUALITY TRAINER: A +3 or above trainer will receive 2 points.
CRACK: A crack for a protected/non-working game gets you 2
             points.

+3 Points - INT: An English-language release of a game will receive 3
             points.
QUALITY FOREIGN: A Foreign (non-English) game that is 100%
             playable.
TRANSLATION: Translating a non-English game to English =
3 points. The points reflect the major amount of work this
             requires!

+4 Points - MAJOR: Usually the best/most-anticipated game of the month.

A lot of great stuff here. I didn't realize 'It's a World Rally' needed a
crack until it was almost released. Great job. I'm glad to see a good
effort in the scene to keep games playable and more enjoyable with the
 trainers :).

Dropzone is cool! I remember this game from the SNES and this port
is well done too. It's a great Defender clone, but more like a cross
between Defender and Choplifter. I think it could've used a bit more
work though because I remember the SNES version had bosses frequently
and I didn't manage to find any in this one. Maybe I just didn't play
enough stages. Overall it was fun :).

 - Amptor/Oldskool

Here we go with the first groups' summary for april and may 1999...
CAPITAL, my group, kicking with lotsa cool trainers (a +8 from rtx!)
and Dropzone for all fans of classical gaming. +32 in total, which means
3rd place for our gbc trainer force.

 - Gilligan/Capital

As always, Capital continues to release a good amount of trainers and fixes.
They finally have another group for competition with trainers, EUR&NFL, but
I doubt that will slow them down one bit. As far as games go, Capital only
managed to release one game for the past two months, hopefully we will see
more games from them in the future.

 - Rza/Menace

Well, quite a good couple of months for CPL I think...Rotox kicked ass with
a +8 trainer for Moon Patrol/Spy Hunter, the biggest trainer on GBC to date,
but a distinct lack of games means the points total isn't too impressive.
Still, despite occasional competition with quick +1/+2 trainers from EUR^NFL,
CPL continue to dominate the crack/trainer scene.

 - Wayne Kerr/Capital

For a while it seemed like a new trainer was appearing every other day
and Capital were certainly producing most of the goods.
The +8 for Moon Patrol & Spy Hunter has got to be a highlight, seeing all
those options was certainly impressive and it certainly is the biggest
handheld trainer yet. The release of colour Dropzone was good and it looks
like the game was updated a bit from the old 1992 monochrome GB version.

Well here's an interesting fellow. I remember him talking about getting an
original of Road Rash to rerelease it since Anthrox screwed up the copy that
has been spread throughout the net. Good work on this one, I should try and
see if this one works better. Moon Patrol and Spy Hunter is the best release
here. I remember borrowing my brother's Apple II and playing that game on it.
Hmm..I guess someone had to release the Barbie game. I thought it would've
been Eurasia ;). This is probably a good addition to some hentai freak's
collection, although I don't know why those people like a little girl's game
 haha.

 - Amptor/Oldskool

Barbie eh?.. that's for the scene dudes` little sisters ;) hmm.. mine is 20+..
good work anyway. Don`t like MoonP&Spy, prolly you must have been playing it
back in time to love it now, dunno..

 - Gilligan/Capital

This month, we saw two releases from duz. His first, was Barbie which
someone had to release no matter how bad it was. The second release had a
bit of controversy, since the game was really not duz's to release. Also,
many people thought the game was beta because of its horrible sound. I went
out and picked up the game and verified that it indeed was final. Anyways
it was good to see a new person releasing games.

 - Rza/Menace

Hmmmm, what to say? Everyone claimed that Moon Patrol/Spy Hunter was a beta
but the game is fully playable so I guess the points are given anyway. And
of course you can't beat a bit of Barbie! A promising start for this newcomer.

 - Wayne Kerr/Capital

Well it's good to see there is still interest in releasing older titles
for those of us who are searching for the ultimate GB collection. There
is still loads of old titles that never got released to the scene.
Anyway, That release of Moon Patrol & Spy Hunter definitely seems odd (or
was it just my bung card producing the garbage sound?!) oh well...

Looks like Eurasia took over this month. A lot of nice trainers. Good to see
people coding this stuff! Roadsters '98, although a game with cheesy graphics,
is a pretty fun game. Rox is a nice sort of tetris clone that I haven't
checked into much. Great to see more color releases of puzzlers. It amazes
me that Eurasia nearly takes over all of the Japanese releases Oldskool would
eventually release. Good work guys. This group brings major competition to OS.

 - Amptor/Oldskool

Nightfall back in scene life ? yeah! together with eurasia they bring us this
mixed bag of releases. SD Hiryuex is quite nice imho. KOF on ngpc looks ten times
 better though :)

SMBros dx +3 ? hmm.. cpl already did that one day before. I think releasing trainers
on already trained games is only reasonable if the amount of options really differs.
And fixing other peoples trainers because they don`t work 100% flawlessly isn`t really
cool either, as trainers just can`t always be without *any* flaw.

..and yes that isn`t objective as I am in cpl.. just my 2 cents

 - Gilligan/Capital

Eurasia and Nightfall merged and have started releasing trainers along with
games. Eurasia managed to release some games after an inactive period.
However, most of their games were downloaded off a webpage and just converted.
Nevertheless, it was nice to see them back in action.

 - Rza/Menace

Lucky Luke was definitely the pick of the bunch here, a welcome return from
everyone's favourite Nederlander SCiZE! Another nice Infogrames colour
platformer...Otherwise, the main change was the new co-op between EUR and
old SNES group NIGHTFALL. It was nice to see XAD back in the training mood,
and with a nice-looking menu too. Shame the trainers aren't up to the old
SNES standard, with a lot of simple +1/+2's, including Prince of Persia +2
which was fixed using a direct rip of the CPL trainer code (from their +4!).
Fortuna migliore prossimo il tempo, Xad! :)

 - Wayne Kerr/Capital

Lucky Luke was cool, proving Infogrames are one of the better companies,
it's even a GBC only game and I guess thats why the effects are so great.
'Fixing' the capital Pokemon pinball trainer was controversial and it didn't
really make a very good start for the co-op, It probably would have been
better to start with a game or trainer. As for the Jap games, yes most of them
were taken from a site but since at that time there was no converter available
and nobody else did it then I think it was justified to release them. Anyway,
expect more cool stuff coming soon from Eur&Nfl.

Pokemon pinball! I thought this game was going to really suck, so I set it
aside for a couple days. When I finally loaded it, I quickly found out it is
one of the best pinball games for Gameboy. I hope to see more pinball games
of this quality. I don't have a rumble pack, but I don't think this game
needs any extra gimmic to be good. :)

Oh and Klustar, that's an interesting Tetris clone. I didn't like the music
much (it nearly put me to sleep). If better music had been used, this would
be a cool game to play. Good thing you can turn off the music, but if I
hear that tune, it gives me a bad overall impression of the game.

 - Amptor/Oldskool

 well....yes... nothin to say.

 - Gilligan/Capital

One of my favorite games this month was released independently. All you
Pokemon fans should love Pokemon Pinball with it's unique mix of capturing
and evolving Pokemon in a pinball game. Gotta catch 'em all ;) Klustar
on the other hand was a crappy Tetris type game not worth playing.

 - Rza/Menace

Klustar & Pokemon Pinball were both very poor, so the Independent guys are
welcome to them! Zizero entered the scene with a very nice trainer indeed, and
is definitely once to watch...you have to respect a man who can make a +1 into
a +6 by enabling built-in cheats, and the menu was tremendous!

 - Wayne Kerr/Capital

The trainer has to be the best out of this lot!

One thing I can say about menace is they come out with a lot of the best
quality releases. Super Mario Bros. DX is one of the most popular games
out on GBC, some may think it deserves more points :). Several other
familiar classic games here as well as popular sports titles. What I was
waiting for most was Top Gear Pocket. This game wasn't as good as I thought
it would be though, (I was hoping for a remake of the SNES version) but it
is a decent game (although I like V-Rally quite a bit better and it doesn't
need a rumble pack to impress me :).

 - Amptor/Oldskool

Wow! Menace rockin the scene with Super Mario DX, Prince of Persia Logical..
If Black Blass wouldn`t have been released uncracked I would say *prefect* !
(look for a trainermaker/cracker and rule)
 Greets to rza!

 - Gilligan/Capital

Menace continues to dominate the US scene, releasing every US game except
for the two released by duz. May was an extremely big month, and Menace
released the long awaited SMB DX. They also started releasing a few JAP
games, and there should be a some more of those in future. Menace has no
intention of slowing down, and we should see lots of releases from them.

 - Rza/Menace

Well, two words define MNC's performance in the past 2 months: KICK ASS!
May especially saw the US-based group completely dominate the GBC scene,
and I suspect this will continue for the forseeable future - if MNC
could crack & train, there would be no need for any other GBC group to
 exist...

 - Wayne Kerr/Capital

Dominating the USA releases again, nice work. Of course, Super Mario Bros DX
was awaited by most and when it arrived we were not disappointed. Other
titles to note were Klax and Top Gear (although I preferred V-Rally also!)
Hmm.. was Black Bass really protected or was it another bung cart fuck up ?

Hmm..more multilanguage releases. I guess someone has to release them.
Hopefully there are many people who can benefit from the language options,
as my first (and only) language is English. Makes me wish all Japanese
 games were multilanguage Japanese/English. :)

As far as the dupe goes, The Rug Rats movie doesn't seem too popular of a
release. This is probably why it was duped. That or NBC is so new that
they have a hard time following releases on the scene (well then again,
there are pages to visit that have release info).

 - Amptor/Oldskool

Nothin big happening.. Super Breakout and Rugrats dupe.. hope to see more
 from you next month.

 - Gilligan/Capital

NBC got off to a bad start with releasing a dupe as their first game. Their
second release was just a multi-language version of an old gbc game. Not
sure how much releases we will see from NBC in the future.

 - Rza/Menace

A dupe, and an international version of a game that has no reason for text.
It appears that, for April and May at least, NBC suck...

Hmm..first thing that may come to mind when you look at this list is "Jap Crap"!
But this really isn't the case. It's a World Rally and Gameboy Gallery 3 are
pretty cool releases. But then, it seems like the rest of this stuff could easily
be chucked out the window and forgotten about. Anything is worth releasing though,
and the points really add up.

 - Amptor/Oldskool

NIL dominating in jap releases once more. Greets to all lucky(?) dudes that can read
 japanese ;)

 - Gilligan/Capital

NIL continues to be a steady source for JAP releases. I really enjoyed
Gameboy Gallery 3, and It's a World Rally was a nice racer also. Not much
else to say, but I'm still enjoying Beatmania ;)

 - Rza/Menace

A fairly quiet couple of months by NIL's standard, but still some fine releases
from the land of the rising sun. World Rally is probably the best racer on GBC
but without a firm grasp of Japanese I think most of the other releases remain
 unplayable.

 - Wayne Kerr/Capital

And again we see NIL bringing us some more releases from the far east.
Gameboy Gallery 3 is probably the best of this bunch. It's good that someone
is bringing us these Japanese games because we don't want to miss anything!!

Wow, beat out NIL with our two dupes (and them having only one!) Well I don't
know why anyone in our group would make the mistake to dupe things, but
I've seen other groups do it. I keep hearing that OS is infamous for it, but
I don't think it's really that big of a deal. Too bad the only good game
here is Puchi Carat, another Arkanoid clone. But that's just my opinion.
I've heard people say Hamster's Paradise is good too. I would've liked
Las Vegas Coolhand better if they copied the way Micr0soft lays out cards in
their games :) But it's an ok card playing game.

 - Amptor/Oldskool

OLDSKOOL proves once more that jap. people love crap. Load up Hamsters Paradise
and see yourself hehe greets to cqbs&Faz&Hudson!

 - Gilligan/Capital

Oldskool is back to normal releasing JAP games (mostly unplayable) and a few
multi-language versions. As always, there are dupes, which really should be
avoided. I don't know what is up with Rugrats either since it seemed to be a
game everyone wanted to release, even though it was out for a while, released
by Capital. Nice to see Oldskool active after Faz's vacation.

 - Rza/Menace

Hamsters & Horses are amongst the OS releases this time around...but apart
from appealing to sexual deviants they didn't offer much enjoyment for the
rest of us! Puchi Carat (c) Taito was the pick of the bunch, an excellent
conversion of the arcade game. Still, OS affect their reputation by
releasing too many dupes...a little more 'Quality Control' and OS will be
 up in the top 3.

 - Wayne Kerr/Capital

I think the problem with the dupes was the lack of distribution for Oldskool.
Hopefully this has been sorted out now. Nothing much to say about the other
releases, Hamster Paradise is very strange.. go check it out!

 - Gilligan/Capital

Hmm, nothing really new from Paradox. All games have been released in other
languages and some practically identical except for the publisher or tiny
variation in a game title. Seems that PDX has become the group who release
leftover games no one else wants to. I hope they will start releasing more
games that are not already out.

 - Rza/Menace

A couple of "near-dupes" this month, with Logical and Top Gear Rally only
containing different title screens from the previously released versions.
The nice-looking Tabaluga was unplayable for most of the world, due to it's
German text - no translations PDX? A quiet couple of months, nothing up to
the standard of their V-Rally release in March...

Ah..finally a soccer game for GBC! :) This one is pretty good. I thought
the control was pretty bad when I first tried it, but you get used to it.
Just try it out longer than 5 minutes and you'll really get into the game.
When I tried it, I put Spain vs. Argentina. Well, nobody made a single score
because I and the GBC were both great players. At the end, the final scoring
done by goal kicking made me the loser :/ It seems like that part could've
been done better, as it seemed like you don't have much control over the goalie.

Great release anyway :) Keep up the good work. Quasar is a great group to still see
in the scene. Greets to pL!Qsr :)

zero,nada,nothin... ;( same for trsi by the way
hey ayatollah! put your n64 in the cupboard and do some gbc trainers! :)

Quasar, a group that releases about one game a month, released ISS '99, a
decent soccer game. I was actually surprised by this release because it
was a while before their last release, but its great to see a release from
them every once in a while.

 - Rza/Menace

Just when you thought QSR were going to sleep through the past two months
entirely, they came up with a football (we invented it before your country
existed, so it's not soccer :) ) game everyone was waiting for...so, a good
release, although most definitely NOT a good game. I was amazed Konami
even thought about releasing this commercially...Still, I need to disassemble
it to find out how they put the processor in 1/4-speed mode :)

 SUMMARY
 -------

Well, two main things to comment on this issue...

[1] Eurasia&Nightfall get a point for fixing our (Capital) trainer for
Pokemon Pinball, even though our trainer works. Are we too generous?
Well, apparently the game crashed if you reset (START+SELECT+A+B) instead
of doing a hard reset...to be fair to both, we kept the +1 we received
     AND gave EUR^NFL a point...

[2] We are looking for at least ONE member of every active release group
on GBC to contribute their comments to each chart issue...this time around
we managed to get MOST at short notice, but we are missing a couple, most
noticably EUR^NFL - this is due to the fact that things were a bit of a
rush job! The JUNE issue should be complete...someone from EUR^NFL and
any other valid release group who wishes to comment please contact one of
us (Gilligan, Rotox or Wayne Kerr) in #gbc.

Thank you, see you in the next issue...
