| Issue #3 (July) ' .::.:|
`--------------------------------------------------------------------'
INTRODUCTION
------------
July sucked. Actually, it wasn't too bad, the sun was shining and lots
of people (although not me) were on holiday! I am of course referring to
the number and quality of games released for GBC during July...the word
"wank" sums it up nicely I think, possibly preceded by "load of".
If August isn't better, I'll shoot myself. And you can quote me...
NOTE: Opinions expressed below are the opinions of the named author! If
Mr.X of GBCLOSERS says that your group bends over and gets anally
penetrated by a herd of goats, that's nothing to do with us.
Contact CPL about the CHARTS, otherwise contact the person responsible
for the comment you dislike.
Ok, Let's get July over with...

Capital pulls off a few trainers this month. With all the free time from
releases, I thought I might see more games trained. But I guess these guys
don't have that much time on their hands during the summer. Jetpak DX was
trained because they really liked the game. This wouldn't be scraping the
bottom of the barrel because there are other trainers that can be worked on :)
- Amptor/Oldskool
Good work this month for CPL, expecially the trainer for my good friend
quang's game, Jetpak DX (should of won the Bung compo, but oh well).
HMC looks good and also has a retro feel to it (DigDug anyone?). Keep it up.
- BigRedPimp/Rapid Fire
With barely any games out this month, there was a lack of the many trainers
which we would normally expect from CPL. As for the game they released, I
was hoping Holy Magic Century would be a cool game, but it turned out to be
the euro version of Quest Fantasy Challenge. Things should pick up for
CPL as soon as more games come out.
- Rza/Menace
3 points...oh my god. I was sure we did more than that this month!
Well, we were all away on holiday during this month...erm, the dog ate
our homework...my gbc broke...ummm.
Ok, no excuses - we plain sucked during July :)

Hmm..I never noticed the emulators fix. Why would e^n release that kind of
junk? Also, a non working V1 fix. Hmm..something strange going on here.
At least they picked it up at the last minute with more Japanese releases.
Good job, that more than makes up for the loss of a point :)
- Amptor/Oldskool
The winner of the "Most releases in a single month" title for July goes
to E^N. They pulled off a last minute batch of releases to make their mark.
Jap crap to me but nice work anyway.
- BigRedPimp/Rapid Fire
EUR^NFL had four japanese games the last day to squeeze in some extra pts.
I didn't actually get time to try any of them out so can't really say much
about the games. Nice that they managed to get some games this month.
- Rza/Menace
Just when you thought Eurasia^Nightfall were going to come last with a grand
total of -1 points, they slip in at the last minute with some decent Jap
releases. Doraemon is pretty cool...
On the flipside, a couple of lame 'fixes' took the gloss off July's total.
An emulator fix?! From a group who hate emulamers?! Bizarre...not to
mention a fix that doesn't fix anything...Still, with a good finish to the
month I expect Eur^Nfl to continue releasing some cool stuff during August.

Although these are slow times, MNC continues to put out stuff that needed to
be released. Seems like nobody really pays attention to Looney Tunes games or
Top Gear Pocket, but at least Menace is on the lookout.
- Amptor/Oldskool
Is that the fresh smell of good releases? <g> CP2 turned out to be one of
the best releases this month. I give you guys 2 r00s up.
- BigRedPimp/Rapid Fire
Only two of the four games released by us were new, the other being
different versions of games already out. This month was pathetic in my
opinion, but there should be plenty of releases in the upcoming months.
- Rza/Menace
9 points, but 4 shitty games. Not that it's Menace's fault you understand,
but all 4 of these games are stinkers! Maybe next month we'll start to see
some better releases, and you can bet MNC will continue to bring them to
the scene first...

Ah another group taking over the Japanese releases. Good job..always seems
like some may be missed, but as long as several groups go after them
unreleased games will become scarce.
- Amptor/Oldskool
Congratulations on releasing the "Game of the Month". I was looking
forward to this one and it didn't disappoint. Good job.
- BigRedPimp/Rapid Fire
Even in this slow month, NIL managed to put out some decent games. Yu-Gi-Oh
II is extremely popular in Japan, and has already sold over 1 million copies,
but is pretty much unplayable to most people. Choro Q is a mix of RPG and
racing. Some people said they couldn't even race, but if you took the time
out to figure what options did what, you could get pretty far. I got up to
racing another person and it seemed to be turn based. It seems interesting
and I'll probably play it a bit more. Track and Field was a colorized
version of the GB game and was the best out of the games this month.
- Rza/Menace
Yay! NIL are back! With Track & Field too...awesome...an excellent
conversion rightly gets them Game of the Month. Eurasia seem to be giving
them some competition on the Jap stuff these days, but I expect we'll still
see NIL bring us the majors from the Orient in the coming months.

Ah OS busts out with a few more Japanese titles as usual. I also didn't
expect multilingual Centipede or Frogger (is there really that much text
in these games? :)
- Amptor/Oldskool
If I knew Japanese, maybe I would of been able to follow OS's JAP
releases this month. At least Centipede & Frogger were released in their
multi-language glory. Good job.
- BigRedPimp/Rapid Fire
There were no japanese GBC games this month as expected from OS. Instead
they released two multi versions of previously available games.
- Rza/Menace
Centipede and Frogger, again. And they both sucked the first time...:)
Not the best month OS have had...a little quiet during July, but then the
entire scene was quiet so we'll let them off! Still bringing us GB/SGB
releases too...

Well, I couldn't find a copy of KOF95 anywhere because it's an old GB game so
I didn't know it was a dupe. Could've just put it out on someone's fserve
I guess. Can't fault these guys though because it's hard to find info about
previous releases for the GB. Also I heard rumors about another Samurai
Shodown being out on GB about 2 years ago heheh (SS2, I guess)
maybe someone should check into that. ;)
- Amptor/Oldskool
I know I'm not the first to say it but I will anyway. We suck. At least
we have a good asm person on our team who never manages to disappoint me.
Keep it up Alfiax. Hopefully, once I get my act together, I'll be
doing some great releases. Look for some great things from us in
the future.
- BigRedPimp/Rapid Fire
With one person doing all the work, I don't understand why there is even
a group...
- Rza/Menace
A GB dupe from '95 didn't exactly start off the month with a bang, but RPF
managed their first positive score this time around with a patch for
ChessMaster making it run in double-speed mode - congrats on a very good
idea...

Ok. Slow month..good to see Paradox has a place in this month though :)
- Amptor/Oldskool
Disney? Bleh! Oh well, the releases were good anyway and I commend you
guys for trying to release something each month.
- BigRedPimp/Rapid Fire
For all those collectors out there, PDX released the european version
of A Bug's Life which was only different in checksum. As soon as more
games come out, I'm sure we'll see the normal bunch of european games
from PDX.
- Rza/Menace
Personally I would give this -1 DUPE points, but it's not up to me :)
The only reason the checksum is different is because the game name has been
changed to comply with new Nintendo approval regulations - the game is 100%
identical to the original cart released several months ago. I expect more
from PDX in August tho...

SUMMARY
-------
July was the worst month on record for GBC so far...very few releases, and
almost all of them were poor quality (and that's being kind :) ). August
should see the first of the Xmas games appearing, and things should only
get better from here to the millenium...I hope all the groups are ready
and able, cos the competition will really hot up over the next 5 months!
Now, stop reading this crap and go out & enjoy the sun...what are you,
a computer geek?
