NEWS 01/2000 (1)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------//
ITEM 1) scene-DCC is born!

--- what the hell is scene-DCC?

scene-DCC, and to an equal extent the "obscene newsletter"
(which stands for "our bitchin' scene" in a gratuitous display of
my gross idiocy), is an offer bot ran by spinsane of ACID productions
via Remorse!Ascii.

--- again, in layman's terms, what the hell is scene-DCC

well, basically, scene-dcc is something that i felt the
conglomerate of computer underground scenes needed: a easy to reference
place to get the newest releases and information, regardless of demography
pertaining to the varied facets of the computer underground. the time when
the different sections of the underground were connected via BBSes, shared
media packs, etc is pretty much behind us, and i don't think anyone is
going to suffer from this attempt to make everyone aware of whats going on.
idealy, this would serve as a bridge to remind people in the HIREZ scene
what people in the BBS MODDING scene are doing and vice versa, etc, etc.

so, the plan is to have this bot up 24/7 in a number of channels
serving a variety of people. no annoying mass listings will be made,
unless i can find a script to cycle the listing through the different
channels. people can (hopefully) send me their work via DCC, or preferably
email, and i'll put it up for them.

by the time you're reading this a web page should be up, and
while i don't have an URL registered for easy access, its still better
than nothing... and now for a short little FAQ about this project.

  ------------//--- OB-SCENE FAQ 1.00 :) ---\\----------

       1) BOT STUFF
            a) who will you be serving?
            b) how do i get packs to you?
            c) how long will packs be displayed
            d) where will my packs go after the time limit is up?
            e) do you know of any other bots of this nature?

       2) NEWSLETTER STUFF
            a) what will the newsletter entail?
            b) what is the subscription service?
            c) can i help in any way?

       3) MISCELLANEOUS STUFF
            a) how is this magical service possible?
            b) i want to send spinsane free hardware, what do
                i need to do?!?

  ------------------------------------------------------

       1) BOT STUFF

          a) WHO WILL YOU BE SERVING?

hopefully, the actual project will serve everyone from web page
administrators, to shell providers, to hirez artists, to s3m/mp3 musicians
to coders, to hackers, to script writters, to ansi/ascii artists, to sysops,
siteops and warez pimps oh my!.

          b) HOW DO I GET PACKS TO YOU?

well, a couple important facts come to mind here: 1 - i use shell
accounts, don't have my own ftp server up, run DOS on my home computer, and
am basically limited to EMAIL, IRC and FTP.
the prefered way to get releases you want to see offered to me is
to email me at

                        spinsane@j00tel.net

        and attach the respective piece.
alternatively, you could try DCC sending the file to me, but please
don't. i run an old ircii script (venom!) that is so shitty and fucked up
that i don't know if i can properly set the download directory anymore, and
i'll just end up loosing it. in short, email me the packs, or send it to my
actual personage on IRC.

          c) HOW LONG WILL PACKS BE DISPLAYED?

i'm currently shooting to give each piece a 2 month "display" period.
if i find that i'm taking the generous root at j00tel too much with this long
period, that may be decreased to 1 month.
i feel that 2 months is best as it allows for IRC stragglers to find
the packs, as well as allowing for overlap in non-monthly releases.

          d) WHERE WILL MY PACKS GO AFTER THE TIME LIMIT IS UP?

as of now, i'll try to get them to ftp.cdrom.com in the appropriate
directory for you. granted this won't work for demos, and until i find an
FTP site for demos and random music releases, you're out of luck. (this
is why its important that if YOU know a site op for demos/music etc, you
let me know ASAP!).
as well, i'm looking for couriers if you will... to spread the
packs to various telnet BBSes that so wish to have these services. as
i stated, i can't do this myself because RZ is broken on my dialup shell
account, and its been 3 years of trying to get them to fix it and no doing.
basically, i can't upload telnet, so someone will have to step up and do it.
but if you're the sysop of a board, you can subscribe to this
service (see below) and state you'd like me to email you the actual packs.
this i can do. just upload them as spinsane for me, so i get credit :)

          e) DO YOU KNOW OF ANY OTHER BOTS OF THIS NATURE?

no i don't. thats why this one is here. feel free to set up your
own and tell me about it.

       2) NEWSLETTER STUFF

          a) WHAT DOES THE NEWSLETTER ENTAIL?

the newsletter is what you're reading right now. :)

it'll hopefully be a monthly sort of thing, where i touch
up on new BBS's, releases, web pages, etc. there shouldn't be any
reviews or anything, because frankly, this isn't an e-zine, its a
newsletter. got it? good!

           b) WHAT IS THE SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE?

the subscription service is a very lo-tech way of me sending
you the newsletter as it comes out. this is useful if you don't plan
on being on IRC too often, or if for some reason the bot goes down or
whatnot. there won't be any fancy web page online subscription stuff,
just email me at the above address saying you want to subscribe, and
i'll put you on my list. unsubscribing will be equally easy, and since
this list isn't automated, you don't have to worry about fun things
like, getting stuck on the list, or having your email given out to
spam barons.

           c) CAN I HELP IN ANY WAY?

of course! this project is based upon you helping me help you!
i'm a very sporadic IRC person, and while i catch a good deal of the news
and stuff, i miss a lot more of it. in fact, no one person can get all
the information that is available about our wonderful scene at any given
time. therefore, its imperative that you use this primitive system i've
set up to email me all information that you want to see passed around.
think of it as an elite scene newspaper.. or something.

       3) MISCELLANEOUS STUFF

           a) HOW IS THIS MAGICAL SERVICE POSSIBLE?

this wonderful service is being sponsered by my good friend
baracuda at j00tel.net, an up-and-coming ISP in my hometown of tampa, fl.
dan (baraj00da) shares my interest in things elite and archaic, and though
not involved in computer art, music or warez, he was an avid bbser and is
still a very intense coding machine. make sure you say hi, and remember
his ISP and web hosting service once it is made public.

           b) I WANT TO SEND SPINSANE FREE HARDWARD, WHAT DO I DO?

excellent question, in fact its probably the most frequently asked
question of them all, and thus gets the auspicious placement of last in
the FAQ. :)
since i run a 486/66 with 4 megs of ram, 80 meg and 2.1 gig
harddrive and 28.8 modem that connects at 14.4, i could use some new
equipment. actually, ram would help, so if you have any 70 (72?) pin
simms you want to donate, email me at : spinsane@j00tel.net :)

  ------------------------------------[eof]------------

ITEM 2) karma ascii is reborn!

according to ant1k formerly of karma!ascii, said group has
been re-instated and is looking for new members. try #karma on efnet,
or message ant1k for details.

ITEM 3) epic ansi dead?

according to panacea epic ansi is dead. :)
but according to epic members, that is not true at all.

ITEM 4) your news item here!

releasing a new song? drawing a solo ansi pack? polishing up
the code to your new demo? looking for that last logo for your ascii
collie? your news could be here! email spinsane@j00tel.net foo'!
weather you just set up that leet POP3 server for your friends,
or you're looking for a MOTD ascii for your box, obscene news can do it
for ya!
