Official Judging Rules for the QB Demo Contest 2002
====================================================

Thank you for volunteering to be a judge for this year's QB Demo Contest.
The judging submission deadline is June 4, 2002 at 12:00AM GMT.
Here are the instructions and official judging rules for the contest.

I. ENTRY ARCHIVE DOWNLOAD AND JUDGING ENVIRONMENT SETUP

Download VDMSound from https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=20091&release_id=46941
and install it, if you haven't done so already.

Download the demo entries from the following internet link:
http://www.tekscode.com/~toshi/ENTRIES.ZIP
The ZIP archive will contain the following files:
	OPTIMUS.ZIP
	SANE.ZIP
	QASIR.ZIP
	TOR.ZIP
	FFIX.COM
	ENTRY.BAT
Extract all of the files from ENTRIES.ZIP using Winzip from
http://www.winzip.com or WinXP's internal zip extractor to
a directory of your choice, for example C:\qb45\2002.

Unzip each of the entries into a subdirectory of the same name,
for example OPTIMUS.ZIP into C:\qb45\2002\OPTIMUS\. Now your
directory structure should look like this:

C:\qb45\2002\
C:\qb45\2002\OPTIMUS
C:\qb45\2002\QASIR
C:\qb45\2002\SANE
C:\qb45\2002\TOR

Open the folder where you unzipped the entry files to.
Right click on ENTRY.BAT and select Run with VDMS. If a
tips window shows up over the DOS prompt, then press the
"Close" button. The DOS console should look like this
(minus the vertical bars on the left):

| VDMSound DOS loader, version 2.01 (Aug 04 2001)
| Copyright (C) 2000-2001 Vlad ROMASCANU.
|
| VDMSound is covered by the GNU Public License (GPL), version 2 or later, as
| published by the Free Software Foundation, Inc. (http://www.fsf.org/).
|
| Loading 'VDDLoader.dll'...
| Successfully loaded & initialized (hVDD = 0x01).
|
| Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
| (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
|
| C:\qb45\2002>

Now type FFIX.COM to start the QuickBASIC floating point accelerator
TSR as shown below.

C:\qb45\2002>ffix.com
FFIX (c) 2000 by v1ctor [av1ctor@yahoo.com.br]
loaded to memory.

Choose a entry to judge, for example QASIR, then
change to the entry's subdirectory, then search for
the demo executable (it will be only file with the
.EXE extension.) Run the demo executable.

C:\QB45\2002>cd qasir
C:\QB45\2002\QASIR>dir *.exe
 Volume in drive C has no label.
 Volume Serial Number is 14E2-FF35

 Directory of C:\qb45\2002\QASIR

06/16/2002  12:00 PM            93,964 ispman.exe
               1 File(s)         93,964 bytes
               0 Dir(s)  28,694,540,288 bytes free

C:\QB45\2002\QASIR>ispman

In some cases, the sound output may sound horribly distorted
or the demo may cause the DOS prompt to crash. Sane has confirmed
that his sound output code is hardcoded for his machine, so it
will most likely not produce any sound on your card. I have also
found Qasir's mod player to cause sporadic or bad output. Please
report problems like these to toshi@tekscode.com.
In these cases, as a corrective measure, you should choose to
run the demo without sound using the -NOSOUND option. For example,

C:\QB45\2002\QASIR>ispman -nosound

In the cases where the outputted sound detracts more than enhances
the demo (regardless of reason), the demo should be run with -NOSOUND
and judging should proceed as if the demo had no sound to begin with.
This case should be noted in the comments section for the demo.

II. JUDGING

You will rate each demo entry in three areas:
	1. Technical
	2. Artistic
	3. Wow and "Coolness" Factors

For the technical area, you will judge how fast and complex the audio-visual effects are
combined and executed. The other two areas are subjective. For the artistic area,
you will rates the demo's sense of beauty, conveyed through its music, fluidity, and
atmosphere. The wow and coolness factors are actually two separate but related factors.
The wow factor is how pleasantly surprised you were when you watched the demo due to
its originality. The coolness factor is how impressed you were with the demo overall,
and how likely you are to watch the demo again for the awesome experience.

You will rate each of the areas by assigning a score on
a scale from 1 to 5 as briefly explained below:
	5 = excellent
	4 = very good
	3 = good
	2 = okay
	1 = sucks

Please don't give a 5 unless it's really excellent and nearing perfection.
On the other hand, you should give a 1 if the demo is of poor quality.

Namevoting (scoring on the basis on the demo author's previous reputation)
is not allowed.

Demoscene judges: Please keep in mind that these effects
were coded without the use of assembly language (though
it was not strictly required) when scoring for the technical
section.

III. SUBMITTING JUDGING RESULTS

Use the following form to submit judging results to toshi@tekscode.com.
The judging submission deadline is June 4, 2002 at 12:00AM GMT. Fill in
all the underlined areas with scores or comments. You are encouraged to
write more than one line of comments explaining your ratings.
