A female's perspective on the scene
by Maeve Wolf

as appeared in oOze issue #1

I've been hanging around a bit on #ice, #acid, and #ansi. My IRC name is Tatharina but my ANSi and lit name is Maeve Wolf (Yes, I'm a female Aussie =). Anyway, introductions aside...I'll cover a few points..

1. "Hey, the scene's male dominated! Whaddya think about THAT?"

a - Heh. And so's alot of other things in life. You survive. =)

b - Contrary to popular belief, scene guys really aren't that bad. (no really! ;) You can usually tell when they're trying to charm you or when they are consciously aware of their use of language and sexist comments. There's always a few in a group who give females in a male dominated group a bad time (but I suspect that they give everyone, regardless of gender, a bad time..) On the other hand, there's some nice guys who are friendly and willing to help (I think...) The fact that I can't name any right now is no reflection on that... ;P

2. "The scene sucks."

a - The most popular and well-quoted phrase ever. One statement is my reply. The scene is what you make it.

3. "Lit isn't an artform."

a - After seeing some scene "lit" circulating, I don't blame people saying that. Gangsta rap is NOT lit.

b - Writing and prose is an art. This is a big controversy..I know...it's like the assassination of JFK was a CIA conspiracy. Being a writer in Revolt, I guess I'm biased, but true poetry and writing is like painting a picture for the reader, sometimes invoking some kind of emotion within. Cthulu^Mist and Argon^Rev (hahaha..no, I'm not sucking up ;) are the best writers I have seen in the scene. (Cthulu's poem on a Termite Terrace ANSi rocked!)

4. "The scene was better in the good ol' days."

a - Errr...I wasn't here in the good ol' days. =)

5. "Look at the sudden influx of newbies! We're being flooded by lameness!"

a - Hahaha...Well, the way I see it is that the scene's like a cycle. Newbie -> Old-timer -> Newbie again. The fact that there's alot of newbies is good. It proves that the cycle is moving and that means growth within the scene.

6. "There's too many small groups..."

a - I agree...but we don't want the large, established groups to hold the monopoly (no..NOT the board game ;) and turn the scene into a power-mongering corporation...Err..maybe not that far..but you get my point. =)

b - If you want to start a new group, think about it alot first. It takes dedication and hard work and...blah blah..it's all been said before. =P

7. "Argh! Get away from me, you..you..DUAL-GROUPER!!"

a - The highest insult to be bestowed upon anyone. ;P Dual grouping takes alot of time and people just simply don't have that much time. I won't say if it's lame or not...just that it's not wise to take on a second group if you know you won't be able to handle both of them FAIRLY. If you can, then I'd like to know how you do it.. =)

The scene...hmmm...let's not take things too seriously... Life goes on...
