First Words .......................................................... : Hiya all! Maybe my statement in the last HugiNews that if I were in the demoscene, I'd now announce that I was leaving it, confused you. I got only one reply to it, and the writer was very puzzled about the consequences of this announcements. So I suppose that it is not clear what I meant for other people as well. To make it short (I've already typed a lot today and am now pretty tired of this), I have never been really interested in demos. I have been interested in electronical magazines ever since I got to know them, and I also enjoyed reading about the demoscene, which for me then seemed to be a community of idealistic young people of more than average intelligence interested in computer technology and creatively using the possibilities it offers. In the beginning Hugi was entirely in German language and open for all topics without any topic dominating the contents of the mag. As a consequence it had a readership both little and inhomogenous. Hardly anybody was really satisfied with it: for the literature freaks, our short stories and poetry corners in Hugi were too small, for the demosceners, our scene corner was too "lame", and so on. When I decided to expand Hugi and make it an international mag in English language, I decided to focus on the demoscene because even though they seemed to be quite a demanding target group, they were already accustomed to electronical magazines. Moreover, I liked the demoscene spirit, or at least what I then thought the demoscene spirit was. Now, after almost two years of serving the demoscene with Hugi the best I could do, I have a different opinion. It is not primarily that the demoscene would develop too slowly for me, as I stated in previous articles, but that I personally have less interest in what the demoscene actually does - the creation of demos, intros, mods, graphics etc. - than ever. Whilst in the beginning I thought that maybe I could also find time to take part in a demo project or a similar project one day, I later came to the conclusion that making a diskmag of a size, quality and high release frequency as Hugi was in its latest issues already consumes so much time that I barely have any time to do any other large project. This is one reason for the lack of interest for a scene of which I know that I'll never really be able to participate in - unless I stop making the diskmag and the little projects that occupy the rest of the sparetime (e.g. the size coding competition series) and seriously resume learning to code demos, etc. But I am not interested in this, for reason number two: that making demos would not bring me any further in my life today. The actual sense of making demos is - apart from its artistic component, which could also be called "waste of time" in my humble opinion - to get the knowledge and experience that helps you start a professional developer career. I am not interested in such a career, I'd prefer working in a scientific field as a researcher, such as medicine, chemistry, molecular biology or physics. I am still uncertain which of these subjects interests me most. Therefore it would be better if I already read books and magazines on these subjects in order to explore the chances and possibilities I have instead of wasting my time for a scene that does not interest me at all. All of this has only minor consequences on Hugi, however. I will still publish the articles my readers contribute, no matter if they are demoscene related or not. I will, however, not do any more research in the area of demos and the demoscene, unless I am really tempted to do it. In other words, I'll only do what makes fun and personally satisfies me instead of serving the needs of the scene as I have done so far. This also includes HugiNews: I might continue it, I might not. In any case I'll not deliberately search for interesting news on the demoscene any more, so if you want to get a particular news in HugiNews, you will have to send it to me. I hope that you understand my point. Happy reading, and see you next week. - Adok (Hugi Core & Royal Family) . :........................................................................ .. News ................................................................. : Hugi #19 in progress. A quick overview about the current state of Hugi #19: We have recently got some very good tunes (in my opinion) and it is probable that at least one of them will be used in Hugi #19. I would have liked to use all of them but as we already have more than 40 unused tunes in the music pool, older tunes now have priority. We do not have any useable background graphic yet. 300 kbyte of article have reached us so far. Especially in the technical areas, interesting topics are covered: a tutorial on digital signal processing (DSP) and OpenGL stuff, for example. Ghandy also sent us a couple of articles on The Party 99 and the "gamer" problem. You may say it is an old hat, but Ghandy did something no other diskmag editor has done before: he contacted all party organizers whose email addresses he could find and asked them about their opinion and solutions of the "gamer" problem. The resulting two articles are very interesting to read indeed. There are also a couple of literature related contributions, stories and poems. Another interesting detail might be that there are three design ideas of Hugi #19. Design here means giving the issue a special topic, according to which all graphics, music and even writing styles are directed. We will see which topic will be the winner - it mainly depends on the graphicians. Hugi.GER #1 is also under progress. There are enough graphics and music to select from. The background picture will probably come from Zealan/Ashrama. We have articles covering the whole range of classical Hugi topics: literature, computers, politics, philosophy and pure entertainment. The release date of Hugi.GER mainly depends on when I have the time to write my articles and edit the magazine. The release date of Hugi #19 depends only on the graphics: I cannot start formatting any article before I have the background graphics, because the size of the text window depends on them. Its main function will be to create a form of support group for newbie sceners to help them become aquainted with the scene, and to also recruit new people into the scene. Link: http://greenroom.flashdesign.hu/ Pain will not die that soon. With a simple trick, Unlock/Vantage managed to get 10 articles for the next Pain issue (2/00) on one day: Three days before the deadline he posted in several newsgroups that he had got no article for the next Pain issue yet and if this did not change, the oldest diskmag still alive would die. Several people, including Kozmik/Nextempire and distance/tpolm, were thus stirred up to spread the word about the danger lurking for Pain and managed to mobilize the masses to contribute some texts to Pain. As Unlock explained (with, as I imagine, a large grin on his face) on the next day, he had not seriously thought of letting Pain die but just used this announcement as a trick to get more articles. Psychic Symphony, for a change, gave the right answer, namely that the Pain staff cannot hope that they will get support automatically but have to bug potential writers to support their mag until they do so. Pain is indeed not such a respected diskmag that it would be an honour for the authors if their articles got published in it. But Unlock understands this and says that he knows this trick only worked once, namely now, and that for the next time, he has to invent something else in order to get articles. Posted by Adok.
